The duo consisting of Atlanta rapper Killer Mike, and legendary underground produceMC El-P, known together as Run The Jewels, originally came together as a result of Adult Swim executive Jason DeMarco who introduced the two in 2011. After his 2011 album PL3DGE peaked at #115 on the US charts, Killer Mike told Jason that he wanted to make his own AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted. Jason informed Mike, “If you want AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted modernized, the only producer I know who comes close to the Bomb Squad-level of production is El-P”. The duo’s chemistry was immediate, as El-P went on to produce all of Killer Mike’s 2012 last solo album R.A.P. Music, and Mike featured on El-P’s final solo album Cancer 4 Cure. Mike and El’s respective albums released within a week of each other in May 2012, and the two embarked on a twenty-city US tour in the following months. After returning from tour, the pair had found a friendship growing between themselves, and made the decision to put other projects on hold and focus on the chemistry that had been sparked. Recording at an upstate NY studio beginning in April 2013, the duo re-appropriated the phrase “Run The Jewels” from the LL Cool J track “Cheesy Rat Blues", and released their self-titled collaborative album, for free via digital download, only a mere 2 months later in June 2013.

Run The Jewels discography currently exists in a distinct pairing. With Run The Jewels as their debut, this record set the group's tone as a light-hearted, braggadocious duo with as much confidence in their abilities as swag in their punchlines. Just over a year later, the sequel Run The Jewels 2 took the foundation set from their freshman effort and dialed the insanity up to 11. RTJ2 pushed the boundaries of their aggression and flows to new heights; with incredible energy in their verses, and absolutely impeccable beats, blending El-P’s signature industrial sound with sharp synth arpeggios, chopped Zach De La Rocha vocals, and absolutely bonkers Travis Barker drums.
It was then nearly 3 years before Jamie and Mike followed up their breakout RTJ2, with Run The Jewels 3 being released again ahead of its scheduled release date via free digital download, this time on Christmas Eve 2016. Instead of these two attempting to outdo the pure insanity and in-your-face attitude found in their predecessor, Mike and El decide to evolve themselves as a group. The duo had noticeably pulled back on the swag and dick jokes which made such a splash on RTJ2, instead choosing a more subdued, electronic approach to their beats, as well as a clearly stronger political approach in their lyrics. This change in sound and style is demonstrated in the album cover’s artwork. The first two records featured the distinctive RTJ “Pistol and Fist”, with the fist tightly gripping a chain. The chain, in my opinion, represents the swag and braggadocio that drove the aggressive nature of their first two albums. In RTJ3 the chain is removed, leaving only hands that have transformed from bleeding and bandaged, to a pristine gold.
This brings us to early 2020. It’s been nearly 4 years of living in a post-Trump America, and El-P announces that Run The Jewels fourth record has been completed. Mike and El live-stream the first single “yankee and the brave” on Instagram on March 22nd, 2020. Lyrically and sonically, RTJ4 exists as the successor to Run The Jewels 3, with Mike and El again taking the good from their previous effort and launching it into the creative stratosphere. El-P’s beats are again leaning towards the synthetic, electronic side, this time with the intensity dialed all the way up to 11. From a lyrical perspective, RTJ takes the politically-charged lyrics from their predecessor, and again, up the ante, laying down some of the hardest hitting and politically poignant bars either of these two have ever spit.
Album Review
2020 was a year that none of us will soon forget. An unprecedented global health crisis kept the majority of us inside for months at a time. RTJ4 was announced on May 12th, 2020, with a release date slated for June 5th, 2020. However, with 2020 as the gift that won’t stop giving, the end of May was highlighted by the unjust killing of George Floyd. The phrase heard around the world, “I can’t breathe” instantly became a rally-cry for the oppressed to finally take to the streets to demand systemic police reform, as Floyd’s death was not the first time this phrase was uttered in an unjust police killing. In fact, a 2020 study by the New York Times showed that at least 70 people have died in police custody after using the same phrase over the past decade. As millions of American’s began organizing protests and demonstrations in the wake of Floyd’s death, Run The Jewels made the decision to release their latest chapter two days ahead of the scheduled release. El-P tweeted, just minutes ahead of the drop, “Fuck it, why wait. The world is infested with bullshit, so here’s something raw to listen to while you deal with it all. We hope it brings you some joy. Stay safe and hopeful out there and thank you for giving 2 friends the chance to be heard and do what they love”. In line with all past Run The Jewels releases, the album was made available for free digital download, two days ahead of its scheduled release date, on June 3rd, 2020.
THE RETURN (we don’t mean no harm but we truly mean all the disrespect)
RTJ4 opens with the first single, “yankee and the brave (ep. 4)”. Using the team names from their respective hometown baseball teams, Mike and El use the opening track to prove that they’re not just a hip-hop duo, they’re brothers, for better or worse. El-P kicks this installment off with rapid-fire, machine-gun esque snares, matching Killer Mike’s aggressive flow and tightly packed rhymes, before El jumps in to trade some dense rhymes as well. Mike and El depict themselves as outlaws, with Mike surrounded by cops with only one bullet remaining. He contemplates suicide instead of allowing the police to take him alive, until El-P jumps back in, offering Mike a way out, with a getaway car waiting outside. This tense situation is depicted lightheartedly in this song’s music video, which was released via Adult Swim and features the duo animated.
The trade-off between Mike and El’s short verses are reminiscent of late-80’s EPMD flows, while the production sounds like boom-bap that’s been sent to us from the future. This distinctive blend of old-school rap roots and forward thinking production is what continues to separate Run The Jewels from absolutely all of their contemporaries. While so many artists are continually playing catch-up with the latest trends, RTJ are side-stepping the trendy and moving forward with the mind-bending.
FLEXIN’ (ayo one for mayhem, two for mischief)
The second single “ooh la la” samples a Gang Star track "DWYCK (feat. Nice & Smooth)" as the basis for the chorus. I say “samples” as that’s how it is credited in the album’s liner notes, however it’s truly an interpolation of Greg Nice’s bar, slowed down slightly, and sung by El-P and Greg Nice himself. El-P is a true old-head at heart, and it’s abundantly obvious in his work, even going as far as to recruit legendary producer DJ Premiere to handle the scratching on the back end of this banger.
Out of key piano chords are looped to quickly create an unsettling aura surrounding the track, before El-P’s voice cuts through the infectious piano like a whip. Pounding, up-tempo drums are introduced after the chorus’ first iteration, creating what is possibly El-P’s first danceable beat. Lyrically, Mike and El-P initially seem scattered on this track, however the music video quickly makes their point very obvious.

”we imagined the world on the day that the age old struggle of class was finally over. a day that humanity, empathy and community were victorious over the forces that would separate us based on arbitrary systems created by man.
this video is a fantasy of waking up on a day that there is no monetary system, no dividing line, no false construct to tell our fellow man that they are less or more than anyone else. not that people are without but that the whole meaning of money has vanished. that we have somehow solved our self created caste system and can now start fresh with love, hope and celebration. its a dream of humanity’s V-DAY… and the party we know would pop off.”

The video envisions a society celebrating the fact that the class system we currently exist within has finally imploded. Money is worthless, and we have rejected the desire to bind ourselves to the constraints of capitalism. All creeds and colors unite to burn the system that has so effectively controlled us for over a century. It’s a party, and if there was a song to celebrate the end of the world as it is currently known, “ooh la la” is that song.
Mike’s last verse features a few metaphors and comparisons celebrating the destruction of capitalism, saving the most poignant for last:

I used to love Bruce, but livin' my vida loca
Helped me understand I'm probably more of a Joker
When we usher in chaos, just know that we did it smiling
Cannibals on this island, inmates run the asylum

Premo’s expertly cut scratches lead us into the equally hard hitting sample flip of “Misdemeanor”, by Foster Stevens as the basis for the beat to “out of sight”. Lending yet another nod to the old-school greats that laid the foundation for RTJ, “out of sight” samples the same track as The D.O.C.’s “It’s Funky Enough”, only adding a bouncy, electronic synth atop the inverted chord hits, and uptempo, industrial drums, to create an absolutely infectious groove for Mike and El’s dynamic chemistry to shine, rapidly jumping between each other’s two line flows in the first verse.
“out of sight” shows each MC providing insight into how each of them earned a living and achieved their current status. Mike and El’s opening verse each details themselves robbing people in order to eat. El alludes to the fact that he crossed his accomplices in crime for the whole bag, while Mike details the fact his assailant tells him it’s an “honor” to be robbed by his mother’s only son.
While El-P’s production is the obvious stand out on first listen, Killer Mike comes through with one of the most sonically pleasing and technically proficient verses of 2020.

The dense, intricate rhyme schemes smack you in the face, almost distracting you from Mike’s delivery and blistering flow on the verse; flexing his legendary status while paying homage to his drug-dealing past. This absolutely stunning display of technical skill, story telling, and complex rhyming illustrates how RTJ seamlessly integrates the best of both old school and new school hip-hop.
“out of sight” also features a guest verse from 2 Chainz, and he continues to lay the braggadocio on thick. Considering Tity Boi’s dedication to trap stylings, his verse feels right at home on the flex track, despite it’s late 80’s tribute sample, a considerable departure from his usual sound palette.
Up until this point, I haven’t mentioned any of the El-P’s lyrics specifically. El-P is a great rapper, but Killer Mike… Well, Killer Mike is an incredible rapper. He’s the guy who draws you in. El-P is the one who lays the foundation for greatness and Mike is the show stopper, and that’s generally the case for most RTJ tracks. But on “holy calamafuck”, El-P seems determined to make people stop and ask, “Who the fuck is this?!”.
A sharp, yet nearly minimalistic drum kit backing a heavily distorted synthesizer melody lays beneath rhymically knocking cow-bells. This aggressively set stage allows Mike and El to flex as the dynamic duo they are, until the beat suddenly takes a turn for the chaotic. A gnarled, ultra-menacing synth overtakes everything while Mike screams into the abyss, until a distorted snare, enormous 808s, and skeletal hi-hats cut through and launch the beat switch into another dimension. The minimal, yet incredibly dark soundscape allows El-P to snap in a way I have never heard from him previously. His rhymes schemes are reminiscent of an old MF DOOM lyric notebook, while his topics flawlessly combine flexing, psychedelic use, and his well-cemented legacy in the hip-hop community. Cutting and pasting a few of his bars into this review could not convey a fraction of how stunning El-P’s performance on “holy calamafuck” is.
Slightly later in the track list, making liberal use of the Ether song “Gang of Four”, “the ground below” samples and loops the sharp guitar riff and adds aggressive, pounding drums as the basis for the beat; this is finally reminiscent of the forward-thinking, stridulous production El-P has built his reputation on. Capitalising on the classic RTJ moment, Mike and El both flex in their own unique ways. Mike compares himself to Godzilla taking on Tokyo, and El-P demands respect for his name as the legend he is, threatening to smack dying children for mispronouncing his name with his middle finger to the world; his complete disregard for human life and confidence in his abilities are summed up at the end of his verse.

SO¢IAL JU$T-ICE (until my voice go from a shriek to whisper...)
While the first few tracks aren’t without their social and political themes, the back-end of RTJ4 is where Mike and El start to bust out the heavy topics. “goonies vs. E.T.”. starts off light, with El-P pointing to the irony of how once he finally started to make it “big” in the industry, the world began to descend into chaos due to climate changes, increasingly obvious social injustice, and political madness. He culminates his frustration with our disregard for the Earth with a fantastic quotable.

Fuck y’all got, another planet on stash?
Far from the fact of the flames and our trash
That is not snow, it is ash, and you gotta know
The past got a wrath, it’s a lover gone mad

Mike’s verse takes the light-hearted frustration expressed by El-P, and turns the aggression to the next level. Aiming his sights against the ruling class and their society that’s been designed to oppress people for profit, who have very meticulously painted themselves as celebrities and idols to the American public. Mike accepts that he will be villainized by these people for speaking against them, but he welcomes the nefarious role, knowing that the working class will eventually eat the rich, no matter how much they are stomped into the dirt.
And this is just the warmup.
If it’s possible for a song to represent a moment in time that captures the absolute shit storm that has been 2020, “walking in the snow” is that song. It’s release coincided perfectly with the protests for George Floyd which were sweeping the nation. Killer Mike’s verse directly references the phrase “I can’t breathe”, the last words of Eric Garner, which also happened to be the last words of Floyd as well. The fact that this verse was reportedly written in November 2019 perpetually underscores the importance of the content and perfectly represents how persistent this problem is. “walking in the snow” is a true encapsulation of both a defining moment in time and an ever-persisting issue.
But he doesn’t just stop at the racial injustice. Mike goes on an absolute rant about the American education system; how it’s not designed to teach people, but to discriminate against poor populations, limiting their legitimate opportunities, and therefore disproportionately leading them into a criminal lifestyle. He calls out the media as fear-mongers, and the apathy of the American public in the face of indecency. Fortunately for Mike, by the time we finally had the chance to hear this masterpiece, we were already on our feet, using this album as a war cry to mobilize against a tyrannical government that militarized against its own citizens simply for asking that we recognize systemic racism and demanding change. Killer Mike has the best verse of the year, no doubt in my mind.
The only drawback is that Mike’s verse is so fucking good that it completely overshadows El-P’s, which is also amazing. A menacing guitar riff and haunting synths kick the track off into a bouncy groove, where El-P unleashes a flurry of internal rhymes that does not relent for about half his verse. Even adding layers of social commentary within the densely packed bars, El refuses to quit and continues on his political tirade; criticizing ICE’s detainment center practices and the “pseudo-Christians” who support them, with a bar that now lives in my head:

Pseudo-Christians, y’all indifferent, kids in prison ain’t a sin? Shit
if even one scrap of what Jesus taught connected you’d feel different
what a disingenuous way to piss away existence, I don’t get it
I’d say you lost your goddamn minds if y’all possessed one to begin with

The combination of two of the best verses spit by any rapper(s) this year and production help from El-P and long time RTJ collaborator Little Shalimar, create a bouncy, aggressive, deeply truthful banger. “walking in the snow” not only encapsulates the crux of 2020 with lyrics that will become more powerful as they age, but will also forever be associated with the Black Lives Matter movement and the determination to expose continuing racial and societal injustices.
The sonic palette of RTJ4 holds an extremely unique place in El-P’s discography. Jamie is the definition of a self-made 90’s hip-hop legend. This is the dude who put New York underground hip-hop on the map with Company Flow, and he did it with his unique flavor of dark, noisy, dense, boom-bap. Whether he was doing it with the help of Rawkus, or completely independently during his Definitive Jux run, El-P has never made music with the intention of becoming famous. Funcrusher Plus, Fantastic Damage,I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead, and Cancer 4 Cure are all highly revered as industrial, technical, abrasive, and completely unsuitable for the radio or a party. The fact that three songs on RTJ4 could easily be heard on the radio, at a party, or in a TV series credits scene is frankly, astounding. In a 2002 interview/documentary on El-P’s budding record label Def Jux, he stated that his friend bet him $500 that he could not make a beat that was “happy”. At the time of the interview, El-P said that he had not won that bet yet. While I might not qualify the beats on RTJ4 as “happy”, if you showed El-P the beat for “JU$T” in 2002, I believe he might have won that bet.
Pharell opens “JU$T” with the pre-chorus, spitting varied examples of how we’re all slaves to our current system throughout the track, over echoing snares and bouncy 808s before bright synth chords and up-tempo hi-hats burst in while Killer Mike delivers the chorus, pointing to the fact that the majority of the people featured on American currency owned slaves at one point in their lives. Mike’s verse touches on the fact that he has committed crimes to get where they are today. Mike is publicly open about his past as a drug dealer. So why is he a criminal, but Benjamin Franklin isn’t? These are the people who built our country, and they built it on the backs of slaves. He illustrates this theme with a more recent examples:

You believe corporations runnin marijuana? Ooh (how that happen?)
and your country gettin ran by a casino owner (ooh)
pedophiles sponsor all these fuckin’ racist bastards (they do)

When corporations are able to sell cannabis legally, but the government continually incarcerates people who trap, our president is a notoriously fraudulent businessman, and the people who helped put him in power run a pedophile ring, yet none of them face consequences and are allowed to continue to profit and remain in power while people suffer; well, we might be closer to slaves than previously imagined.
Rage Against The Machine frontman Zach de la Rocha also makes his mandatory feature appearance at the end of “JU$T”. As the only artist to feature on three Run The Jewels albums, Zach is essentially an unofficial member of the group at this point. His fiery verse is spit with the same “Rage” energy that set him apart in the mid-90’s, ending the track questioning his place in a capitalist society as a recipe for his inevitable demise, since his “breath”, or art, as his weapon to express himself is still being exploited for other’s profit.
Continuing with RTJ4’s heavily synthetic sonic palette, “never look back” features wavering synth leads resting above the slow-jams snappy snares and thumping bass, while a haunting voice echoes in the background. This unsettling aura provides additional gravity for Jamie and Mike to continue self-reflecting on defining moments in their childhood, and as well as how far they’ve come from those moments. Mike and El are both self-made men, and while they have a certain fondness for those gritty moments that defined them, moving forward in life is undoubtedly more important.
Skeletal drums reminiscent of a slowly pounding heart opens “pulling the pin”, before rhythmic hi-hats and textured, watery synths fluttering in the upper register resting above a bouncy synth lead, and punchy 808s, burst in. The track digs itself into a slower, marching groove and shows the duo figuratively doing exactly what the title implies. Painting a portrait of a society that has turned on itself, Mike and El are ready to pull the pin and start over.
The duo both detail their despise for the ruling class, pointing out multiple examples of how the elite have designed our society to keep poor people in their class. Simultaneously recognizing their own hypocrisy for profiting in a system that inherently discriminates; Mike reflects on his own success, knowing that living the lifestyle he enjoys is one built on oppression, and expresses the guilt that has caused him. El-P opens with a brutal metaphor for police, implying that they’re the root cause of the “wretched state of danger” our society exists within, and that the only effective corrective action is to numb yourself with drugs. Despite his advice, Jamie knows this is not a permanent solution, but one that causes more self-inflicted wounds.
The final piece of the puzzle that is RTJ4, “a few words for the firing squad” begins to close the album with ever crescending strings, and loud, thunderous drums which never seem to resolve, continuing throughout their verses. While the drums that lead to nowhere can be sonically unpleasant, the unresolved melodies are intentionally representative of their current mindsets. Their verses are reflective and grim, but simultaneously optimistic and envisions a world where tragedy is a less common occurrence.
El is grateful for what he has now but recognizes his entire life has been skewed by traumas, so out of place feels normal for him. He reflects on his current success, noting that the worst people tend to end up with the most, which makes becoming “rich” something not as desirable as it once was.
Mike opens up about the death of his mother who died while he was on an airplane, admitting his struggles to not cope with his trauma with opioids. However, his wife provides him the most important reason to stay clean “but my queen/say she need a king/not another junkie rapper fiend” while a heartbreaking saxophone solo highlights the gravity of his lyrics.
The track ends with what sounds the like wrap-up voiceover to a TV show, a conceptually satisfying ending, as the opening track “yankee and brave (ep.4)” began with El-P stating:

”This week, on Yankee and The Brave”

This voiceover paints the duo as brothers on the run from the law and crooked cops, and while this does close this “episode” out as intended, the critic in me is bothered by the slightly kitschy outro to such a spectacular album. The voices singing over and over, “Brave, brave, braaaaaave, Yankee and the Brave” would be, simply put, better left on the cutting room floor. The ending of this track alone is what knocks my score of this album down a few points. Despite its stellar lyrical content, with drums that never seem to reach that “holy shit!” moment, and the easily skippable outro, it’s upsetting to me that an album this great ends on such a low note.
Overview
RTJ4 is by far my favorite album of the year. El-P’s cutting edge approach to their sound, blended with lyrical content that continues to be more relevant by the day, the duo have come together with what is objectively their most accessible album to date. RTJ4 is the natural evolution of sound and subject matter for the duo; taking the foundation set by Run The Jewels 3 and evolving it into a more concise, more accessible, and more conceptual album. While I still personally prefer the “fuck the world” intensity and experimental nature of Run The Jewels 2, RTJ4 opens themselves up to a whole new world of exposure, and when you’re as talented as these two, you know they’re going to capitalize on it. RTJ is currently at their apex, and they’ve created an album that will make many new life-long fans going forward.

Welcome to the newest COVID-19 updates thread - we've scaled back the updates to making new threads when conditions in the state drastically change, such as the state transitioning into "Phase 2" and the June 26 announcement that bars would have to cease on-premises consumption of alcohol.

Important Information

• Leon County Commissioners passed a mandatory face covering ordinance, Emergency Order 20-15. The ordinance took effect at 12:01am on June 25 and required that face covering be worn in all business establishments. The County Commission also provided an FAQ for residents.
• State Reopening: Phase 2 of Reopening under Governor DeSantis's "Safe. Smart. Step-by-Step" began on June 5. Below are the highlights of what "Phase 2" means.

1. Bars and pubs can operate at up to 50% capacity inside and full capacity outside, as long as social distancing is maintained and service is offered only while patrons are seated. Rescinded June 26, see below.
2. Restaurants can seat customers at bars. Restaurants are still limited to 50% capacity.
3. Bowling alleys, movie theaters, concert auditoriums, and arcades can re-open at 50% capacity.
4. Personal services like tanning, massage, body piercing, acupuncture and tattoo shops can operate, following Dept. of Health guidelines.
5. Gyms can re-open at full capacity, as long as social distancing and proper sanitation is maintained.
6. Parimutuel facilities (dog tracks, horse racing, casinos) may submit a reopening plan to the state DBPR for approval.
7. Retail establishments can reopen at full capacity, as long as social distancing and proper sanitation is maintained.
8. Day cares, summer camps, and similar activities can reopen.

• Standalone bars are not allowed to serve alcohol for on-site consumption as of June 26. Bars located within a restaurant and those establishments that receive more than 50% of their revenue from food are not limited by this order. DBPR Emergency Order 2020-09 is located here.
• Leon County is up to 775 total confirmed COVID-19 cases. This includes 739 cases in residents, 36 cases in non-residents, and 1 case of a resident that is not in Florida. There have been 8 deaths and 46 total hospitalizations. There are confirmed deaths in Gadsden (7), Jefferson (4), Liberty (1), Madison (3), and Wakulla (1) Counties.

Testing Information

Tallahassee residents have multiple options for COVID-19 testing.

• The walk-up testing site is located at FAMU's Bragg Memorial Stadium. While walk-ups are welcome, residents are asked to make an appointment. Up to 400 tests per day will be available. Appointments can be made by calling (850) 404-6399. No doctor's note is needed. The testing site will operate indefinitely.
• Patients First is offering drive-thru testing at their Mahan Center location, 1705 Mahan Dr, Tallahassee, FL 32308 for patients that have symptoms or believe they may have been exposed. No appointment or doctor's referral is required, but Patients First asks that everyone register online for an appointment.

1. Patients First is offering antibody testing at their Lake Ella, Appleyard, Raymond Diehl, and Tennessee Street locations for patients that do not currently have COVID-19 symptoms.

• CVS is offering COVID-19 testing at some clinics around town. CVS requires that anyone wanting tested register online first.
• OneBlood is testing all blood donations for COVID-19. An appointment is required to donate blood.

State of Florida Updates

• Current numbers: Florida has 132,545 total cases, with 14,136 hospital admissions and 3,390 deaths (as of the June 27 update).
• All public universities and community/state colleges are moving to online/remote instruction through at least the end of the summer semester. Traditional Graduation ceremonies will not be held. Students have been encouraged to finish remote learning at home if possible.

• Restaurants are allowed to have 50% capacity with social distancing measures in place. Bars are not allowed to sell alcohol for on-premises consumption. Nightclubs are still ordered closed.
• Governor DeSantis announced his plan for reopening K-12 schools in time for the 2020-21 school year in August on June 11. More information will be posted on the FL Dept of Education Coronavirus page.
• All FHSAA events for 2019-20 have been canceled. The April 20 update from the FHSAA is available here.
• Hospitals, surgery centers, dentist offices, etc. are be allowed to perform non-lifesaving surgeries.
• Gyms and fitness centers can operate at full capacity as long as social distancing is maintained and equipment is sanitized after each use.
• Most State Parks have reopened for day use. Limited camping was reopened on May 21. Please check each Park's website for information before you visit to ensure that amenities are open.

Local Colleges and Universities Updates

• All public universities and community/state colleges are moving to online/remote instruction through at least the end of the summer semester.

• FAMU's Reopening plan was approved by the Florida Board of Governors on June 19.
• FSU's Reopening plan for Fall 2020 is available for review here. FSU's reopening plan was approved by the Florida Board of Governors on June 23.
• TCC's Reopening plan is currently being reviewed.

Leon County Updates

• The Leon County COVID-19 page can be found here.

1. Leon County Library System locations will have face masks available to the public for pickup beginning June 24, during regular hours.

• Leon County has declared a Local State of Emergency related to COVID-19.
• The Tallahassee-Leon County Office of Economic Vitality staff has put together an interactive GIS Map showing the various restaurants that are offering takeout/delivery within Tallahassee and Leon County.
• Leon County School Board has announced the locations for food pickup for students. There will be 14 pickup locations throughout the County.
• The Leon County Library system is offering curbside service. This service is available 9am-6pm Monday-Saturday and 1pm-6pm Sunday at the main library and 9am-6pm Monday-Friday at the branch libraries. Leon County libraries are open at 50% capacity for essential activities.

City of Tallahassee Updates

• The City is maintaining an active COVID-19 page with updates on services. There are a lot of updates on that page, so here are what are probably the most relevant:
• The walk-up testing site is located at FAMU's Bragg Memorial Stadium. While walk-ups are welcome, residents are asked to make an appointment. Up to 400 tests per day will be available. • StarMetro's main office is closed until further notice. All StarMetro routes will end by 8pm and buses will be limited to 15 passengers at a time.
• Utility customer support remains available by calling 850-891-4968 or via DigiTally . Utility customers will see a rate reduction credit towards electric on their May bills. This rate reduction is listed as a credit on the fuel charge for electricity service.
• The City has begun to reopen recreational activities at City properties following the "Play Safe & Smart" Guidelines.

1. Effective June 5, the City has moved to reopen more amenities, including city-operated dog parks, the Mike Blankenship Skate Park, Tom Brown Park and Optimist Park sand volleyball courts, and the racquetball courts, pump track, and RC track at Tom Brown Park.
2. Trousdell Aquatics Center is open for lap swimming or water walking. Reservations are required in advance and must be made by calling (850) 891-4903.
3. Forestmeadows and Tom Brown have reopened Tennis Courts. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (850) 891-4940 between 8am-1pm Monday-Friday. Payments for Forestmeadows reservations must be made through the REC1 online system.
4. The outdoor basketball courts at the Jack McLean and LeVerne Payne community centers will be open from 2 - 8 p.m. daily. Courts are limited to 3 people at a time for practice: no pickup games.
5. Jake Gaither and Hilaman Golf Courses are open from 8am-7pm daily for restricted play with a one person per cart limit. Reservations for Hilaman must be made at Hilaman.com.

• The Tallahassee Animal Services Center is open 12pm-5pm daily by appointment only.
• Springtime Tallahassee, Word of South and Leon Works have been cancelled. The Chain of Parks Art Festival has been postponed.

Local Store Hours Updates

• Publix & Greenwise stores will be open 7am-9pm. Pharmacies have returned to regular hours.
• Walmart and Neighborhood Market stores will be open 7am-8:30pm.
• Sam's Club will be open 8am-8pm Monday-Saturday and 10am-6pm on Sunday.
• Costco is operating under normal hours. Beginning May 4, Costco will require all customers to wear face coverings.
• Target: The Apalachee Parkway and Bradfordville Road stores are open 8am-10pm daily. The FSU Target is open 7am-10pm Monday-Friday and 8am-10pm Saturday-Sunday.
• Trader Joe's is currently open 9am-8pm.
• Winn-Dixie: Currently open 7am-10pm daily.
• Community Co-Op Market: 8am-9pm daily.
• The Fresh Market: 7am-9pm daily.
• Fresh 4 Less: 7am-10pm Monday-Saturday, 7am-9pm Sunday.
• Walgreens: Most stores have returned to regular hours. Check each store for their current hours.
• Best Buy: 10am-6pm. Curbside pickup and consultation appointments only.
• Staples: Returned to standard hours.
• Office Depot: Both the Apalachee Parkway and the Capital Circle NE stores are open 8am-8pm Monday-Friday, 9am-7pm Saturday, 10am-6pm Sunday.
• Hobby Lobby: 9am-8pm Monday-Saturday.
• Michael's: 9am-7pm Monday-Saturday and 10am-7pm Sunday.
• Joann's: 9am-8pm Monday-Saturday and 10am-6pm Sunday.
• Kohls: 10am-8pm daily.
• Marshalls: 10am-8pm Monday-Saturday and 10am-7pm Sunday.
• Old Navy: 11am-7pm daily.
• Bed Bath & Beyond: 10am-7pm Monday-Saturday, 11am-6pm Sunday.
• Belk: 11am-6pm Monday-Saturday, 12pm-6pm Sunday.
• Home Depot: 6am-8pm Monday-Saturday and 8am-8pm on Sunday. Both CCNW and CCNE stores.
• Lowe's: 6am-9pm Monday-Saturday and 8am-8pm Sunday. Both CCNW and CCNE stores.
• AT&T: The Tennessee Street store, Park Ave & Magnolia Dr store, Village Square store and Bannerman store are currently open. The Governor's Square Mall store is closed.
• Sprint: Both the Governor's Square Blvd and North Monroe Street stores are currently open.
• T-Mobile: The Apalachee Parkway store is currently closed "for an emergency". The North Monroe Street store is currently open.
• Verizon: The Apalachee Parkway and Village Square stores are both open. The Bradfordville store is currently closed.
• Xfinity: The Tallahassee Xfinity store is open 8am-7pm Monday-Saturday and 12pm-5pm Sunday.

Special Shopping Hours for High Risk Individuals & Essential Personnel

Some stores are holding early shopping hours for those that may be at higher risk or for first responders.
Note: Some of this information may no longer be accurate. If you are planning to shop during these times, please contact the local store to verify!

• Dollar General: first hour they are open each day.
• Target: first hour they are open each Tuesday & Wednesday.
• Walmart: Tuesday from 6am-7am.
• Costco: 8-9am Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Costco will also allow first responders to jump to the front of any waiting line for early or regular shopping hours.
• Sam's Club: 8am-10am Sunday. No Sam's Club membership is required. Masks will be provided.
• Whole Foods: 7am-8am.
• Trader Joe's: Open 8am-9am daily for senior customers (60+) and those with disabilities.
• Fresh Market: 8am-9am Monday-Friday.
• Community Co-Op Market: 8am-9am.
• Big Lots will dedicate the first hour after opening for higher risk individuals to shop (currently 9am-10am).
• Fresh 4 Less: 7am-8am, Monday-Friday.

As no one really compiled the data from Planetside 2's current state into one place, I decided to do active tracking for informational purposes of what we currently know for Planetside community public use, and these difficult times in the uncertainty of the game.
Due to moderator request, this post has the exact content they have written. Less easy to read, but has all context directly.

Q. In your opinion, is the game going to shut down within 6 months?
A. Nope; not unless a significant number of people stop playing (please do not do that) or daybreak itself shutdowns (please do not do that as well)..
Watching how PS1 died shows how it may happen:

• Players will slowly leave overtime, login in less and less, just as they have been for the last 7 years.
• There will be a exodus point, the point where the concurrent player numbers no longer provide an enjoyable/unique experience for the majority and the exodus happens; a sharp fall off of max current player numbers.
• There will be a core player base, the diehards that refuse to leave, refuse to let it go...
• Any point after exodus DBG could sunset the game; it will happen someday; hopefully we have a new and shiny Planetside game by then.

Not six months, unless DBG does something really, really stupid in that time; like hyper monetize the game... You could check out steam stats trends and with a arbitrary exodus number (say 300), you could make an somewhat educated guesstimate as to when that might be; but it would be only slightly more informed than looking into a crystal ball.

Anyone? as in people/persons; yes, many, many people are both capable and yearning to make Planetside 3; Do I think DBG can do it and do it well? Nope...
IMO, The problem isn't the game developers remaining at DBG; they are more then capable and willing to make a great Planetside game. the problems as I see them are:

• Cost/Time: Plasnetside 3 will likely need 3-5 years development; DBG has dwindling revenue stream and they have so far been incapable of delivering a successful game; I just don't think they have the money to do it right. Outside funding is certainly a possibility; I think it could be a wise investment providing they pay attention to the next point.
  
• To much executive oversight/control: I admittedly don't have a complete picture here (any execs who want to stop by and clear things up a bit, by all means please do), as I wasn't involved in executive meetings. All I can say is on countless occasions leads would go into exec meeting and come out with plans for things I had never heard even discussed in the pit (I sat across from a-sites, Carto and near other non public facing leads, so we talked about ideas/concepts a lot.); many times these struct me as "WTF?!?" kinda of ideas. AutoRoyale was probably the closest I worked with the executive level (almost daily meetings), I got a couple stories on that one as well; such a waste...
  

In terms of outside companies: Absolutely, some may not agree but I honestly think Amazon Games (under Smed) would be a good fit; he shared the vision for Planetside 1, lets get back to our roots and see what we can make. It's not limited to them, there are a a large number of really good game companies out there that could do amazing things with the Planetside franchise. Keep in mind, there are nightmare scenario companies out there as well (think Planetside 3: Mobile Casino and Store) and not to scare you too much but they have a TON of money to spend. I for one am ready to roll the dice, I want to see DBG get paid and happy, and at the same time, Planetside to have the best chance at a bright future.
Q. More focus on PS2? Interesting, why specifically do you think they'll go that route?
I also look forward to Sunderdome. For what it's worth, PS:A was pretty fun.
A. Disclaimer: Opinion based and speculation
1) Because it still makes money..its the only valid option they have taking into account the news of DBG setting up "separate franchise teams" and assuming the planetsides stick together.
2) I know who they laid off, and the people they let go (not myself, because somehow a fellow Redditor, who I'm not entirely sure wasn't my mother, correctly deduced level of my incompetence) and that list screams "oh shit! oh shit! oh shit! everything is on fire!!" , atleast to me; seriously half of those people probably got poached while walking out the door yesterday.
My guess...(unless teams get full autonomy from execs)
They monetize the crap out of PS2, in the hopes that the new marketplace content will bring people back to the game (I will laugh while weeping if I'm right about this one..)
PSA makes a hailmary play with Sunderdome or other mode and/or spends some money on marketing
Q. Do YOU think there's any chance the Planetside IPO will be purchased?
A. I do..It has value and was purchased from Sony by a company who at the time stated in they had a five year plan and suggested (at least how I remember hearing it) that they would sell off the company at that time.
Now for the speculation...I'm the furthest thing from an expert here

• We are approaching the five year mark
• We just saw the plan to break the company up into bite size (perfect for selling) chunks
• Nantg H1Z1 sell shows a willingness to sell IP/license.
• Asking price is dropping, state of PSA couldn't possibly help on the front.. Now, all of us know that has no impact on the viability of a future Planetside game; but to be honest I'm not sure the "suits" are entirely conscious of that fact; and buyers may try to capitalize on it (wishful thinking?)
• It has Value, they will either develop under it or sell/license it; the longer they wait the more the value drops.
• I do not believe DBG will try to develop PS3 at this point unless they get an influx of cash.
• I really, really want it to be...wins for everyone, I do think if someone buys it it will be for Planetside 3

Q. Why did CAI even happen and why was the feedback ignored?
A. Hey, So i mentioned in another thread I may not have been on the team for that update (already moved to Mercs/H1Z1) so I can't really speak about it directly. Although I think we were discussing the initial concept when I left. I remembering something about a Lib change early on, making ESF more of air superiority vehicle; having ESF control the sky would allow libs to bombard the ground; I remember liking that on a conceptual level.
As for feedback being ignored, I can't speak to that directly. I can list a few reasons it may have happened.
Direction from above; particularly if there was a monitization aspect to it. Unless a money feature was being introduced I doubt this was it, and honestly one of the hidden benefits of H1Z1/PSA development is it helped kept what we called "Exec Agro" off of Planetside and the other established games; it's kinda like giving them a shine toy to play with over there so the important work can get done here. (Goodluck with the agro Wrel :P) Example time!: Construction Update, we had Orbital Strike and a few other features that we felt really brought the system together ready to go for the launch; but just before that the execs/marketing saw the OS (on screen) and felt that it could be used to drive sales in a future update; so they had us pull that along with a few other features; compromising the system as designed. ~6 months later they basically said nevermind at told us to release the everything else...
The people implementing didn't agree with you.. feedback is feedback, Devs consider it and then make decisions based on their goals for the system/feature.
Feature was designed/planned and then passed onto people with different ideas for it making early feedback requests..awkward...Looking at the timing on this, this isn't impossible.
Q. I think this means PS2 and Arena are 'off-leash' so to speak, they are technically not daybreak games anymore, daybreak seems to be moving to occupy the role of publisher and all of their IP's might be finding a little more autonomy. A. lol, I'll believe it when I see it... We were told about this 6~ months ago; told "they" were going to step back and let us have "control of own destiny".. 30 seconds later in the same speech we hear "We are putting in 3rd person camera" in PSA a feature I know for a fact 90% of the team did NOT want...I called them out on that right then and there...their response, it's to differentiate our product from our competitors and PS2...our competitors... half of the BR games out there are 3rd person...
If they truly do this and leave ALL decisions to their respective teams that would be amazing and PS2/PSA would have a decent chance to make something amazing happen...but ya, this is me not holding my breath...
Q. But why? Let's be real, the Planetside lore is minimal at best. We're here for the massive battles with combined arms set in a sci-fi universe.
Ex-SOE/DBG devs can get together and come up with a spiritual successor. That's all that's needed. If anything, it's more freeing.
A. Money, we all need it. Making MMOFPS is a massive investment of time, money, and talent; people just can't afford to not have a income for the years it would take to develop a game like this independently. This kinda of game just isn't realistic without a serious investor willing to accept the risk; owning the IP would help mitigate the risk a bit but it's still a risk. I believe in the viability of MMOFPS, and I'm sure you do to but unless someone has ~10-20 million dollars to put on the table it's not just not going to happen.
Q. As much as i appreciate your post: I've seen quite some of these in the past - and despite all the forced positivity in them it was never going uphill from there.
I just wish any dev or anyone who has really something to say would actually be blunt at one point. Won't be you, so i can only wish you all the best.
A. No "forced positivity" here; I'm angry, I have been angry for a while (hence my ready to leave) but I'm telling you honestly it is not at the people actually making the games and it is not at a_sites.
I know, I'm dancing around the subject...Let me say this, I would love to see DBG sell the company and make a profit on the sell, because that's what I believe their goal is; and that's fantastic goal to have. I would also like is the buyers to be a company or individual who not only has the drive for profits but also has a passion for games and in particular the MMOFPS genre; while at the same time understanding that their passion for games and profits doesn't automatically make them experts on making those games and that they can learn a great deal from the developers they hire at all levels and endeavor to become part of the process not just control it from above; because I would absolutely LOVE to work for a company/individual like that and would apply the same day of the sell if possible.

Q. This is why it's justified for people to be upset with PSA. DBG invested money into something that was a horrible idea and probably isn't even going to make enough money to let them cover the development costs. Now everyone is paying the price for that abortion of a game.
A. PSA was not originally meant to be BR only. One of the two pitches for it that I know of stated that it needed to be more then just BR to succeed; and that was two years ago. I believe pitch may have even described a match based mini Planetside mode (think sever smash) to help bridge the gap to PS2; even go as far as to add a "Try the battle? Experience the war with Planetside 2" link in the game; the idea was to expose the BR demographic to Planetside.
I understand many of the PS2 players response to what was released, but the review bombing was horrifying to watch knowing that it was going to hurt PS2 as well but not having anyway to stop it.
Also, PSA got PS2 a ton of development including but not limited to DX11 and improved scripting; it wasn't a waste from PS2 perspective. If it wasn't PSA it would have been something completely different and not even remotely Planetside related. it's pure fantasy that Planetside 2 would have received any additional resources if PSA wasn't made; myself and others were moved off of PS2 before PSA was even a concept (if you don't count Mercs, but that's another story)

I can't answer that, it's not fair to the people who have left but want to remain anonymous and it's not fair to the people who are left but want to remain anonymous. In my experience the public knows roughly 1-5% of a dev team; everyone else just wants to do their job in peace.

I can't speak for anyone else, and I didn't sit in the same area of PS2. Speaking for my self..I was just about ready to jumpship and I absolutely love Planetside; it's one of primary reasons I wanted to work at SOE. Planetside is an amazing franchise and I will continue to maintain my believe that it is the model of future PvP fps gaming. (my bias may be showing here :P)
Going forward I'm happy to be a window into my experiences working on PS2 at Daybreak Games but I will be drawing the line on sharing anything that I feel will harm (personally or professionally) my fellow game developers; or anything that harms the Planetside franchise.

A. Ah, well I think they will need to move some resources over to help out, but the devs left involved with PS2/PSA are extremely talented and are more then capable of doing great things in PS2, if allowed to.

A. For PSA; I don't know..
For PS2, You mean now? i don't know how much it would help, maybe they don't either? Outside of email blasting new content to bring old players back, I personally wouldn't even know how to advertise this game.
There's a entire industry devoted to marketing; if they aren't advertising It's probably a safe bet that someone with some level of expertise on the subject decided it wasn't cost effective. but that's just a guess.
Q. revamp the map with psaa stuff and mapparts
A. I don't see this happening; PSA Amerish was striped of way too much PS2 elements; it would have to be rebuilt for the most part; and at that point just make a new continent at work towards the magic 9 number. (9 continents is the number that I believe intercontinental lattice would become viable; that that adding it in ad this point in the games life cycle would make a whole lot of sense.)
Q. I imagine art/sound/engine improvements for Arena translate to PS3 easily. It's easy to see how it could be the stepping stone.
A. I can't imagine they would use Forgelight for PS3...If I had to guess, PS3 will be built on a heavily modified version of unreal unless some 3rd party grabs the IP and wants to use their own proprietary engine.
Q. You mean like a 3rd party studio that's currently developing it's own proprietary large scale networking code and corresponding backend for a UE4 based MMO that's staffed with a lot of key technical and artistic talent from SOE? ;)
Assuming they can get Ashes out the door I think it's almost a given that Intrepid will consider taking a run at an MMOFPS but I think they'd be better served to distance themselves from the financial/creative failures (real or perceived) of the PS IP. What is there in the PS IP that's even of much value if someone wasn't interested in the technical IP?
A. Very good points, you may right. Outside of the Tech, knowledge base still employed at DBG ,and PS2 market value, I think only the name/cannon has any value and that is only worth has much as a moderate marketing campaign aimed at this community (past/present), because one thing I know we are all waiting for is some solid competition.
If Intrepid does get into the MMOFPS making business I for one would be thrilled! They have PS2 and even PS

Go easy on A_Sites going forward, he is a great guy and cares a great deal about the people work under him. Imo, none of the problems that plague Daybreak games/Planetside stem with him or anyone below him; he has a tough job and often requires him to be the punching bag between multiple unrelenting forces. He wouldn’t say this himself so I’ll say it for him; he is an asset to Planetside and any future Planetside project would be better off to have him involved.
Wrel; He’s smart, he’s driven, and he cares a great deal about Planetside; things are likely to get very stressful for him in the coming months. I personally believe that as a result of the layoffs there are going to be some “interesting” changes coming to PS2 in the coming months; believe me, Wrel will be fighting the good fight behind the scenes and what we all end up seeing will be the least damaging iteration of it possible. So please go easy on Wrel as well.

Q. What was the most difficult thing you worked on in Planetside 2? I got the impression that you fixed a lot of the not so visible but important systems that made the game a lot more enjoyable.
A. A LOT of the core systems are adapted from existing systems which were adapted from existing systems and so on an so forth. I don't know if it was the most difficult thing, but early on I remember doing the groundwork for the Implant Revamp and having to navigate the item / item line / item line set / skill / skill line / skill line set paradigm. Oh also Implants weren't of Item Type "implant" that was something else; they were of Item Type "boost". Unraveling all of that was kind of a frustrating mess.
Q. So I guess one big question is on the surface it looks like there’s been some serious brain drain in terms of people with the engine knowledge to fix any deep underlying issues that crop up. Is that needless gloom and doom or an actual possibility?
A. Honestly it depends on where they focus the remaining resources. PS2 has been resource starved for so long that it may actually gain development power out of all of this.

A. This will never happen. Too much middleware (which isn't Daybreak's to release) and potential for exposing vulnerabilities with the other games that share code, either Forgelight or Platform backend.

A. Off the top of my head, Planetside and H1 use: nVidia PhysX, Scaleform, morpheme, and vivox. These are all expensive stuff Daybreak licenses and it would need to be ripped out before open sourcing (not an easy task) and then it would take people a long time to get it to a functioning state because entire systems would need rewriting to function without them.
So it's more like "our recipe for the cake is secret cause it makes money, but if we released the recipe, you need $100k to get flour wholesale from a specific distributor otherwise it doesn't bake at all."

Not giving hackers the blueprints to the security system seems like a valid thing, no? Daybreak is obviously not doing well financially (otherwise there wouldn't be layoffs) and spending extra money on beefing up security to release code open source is a bad financial decision.
Q. Why not? Shouldn't you just have to delete the files daybreak doesn't own the rights to? (Don't know what SCM you used but in git that should be rather simple)
A Cause our code has deep integrations and would give indications to stuff under NDA from those middlewares.
But more importantly: It won't happen because it costs money for no return.

DBDrew's Final Departing Message. (Planetside 2 "Community Manager"/Game Designer)

Its hard to write one of these, especially with how embedded I feel like I've gotten into the community. But as of today, I'm no longer a part of Daybreak Games. Since coming on, this team has done things way above expectations. Both attempting to make huge features, as well as doing our best to respond to and make the game better in general. While there were absolutely hiccups on the way, I feel the team did as much as they could with as much as was given to us.
I plan to continue playing Planetside, and doing what I can to interact with the community, no longer as a dev, but as a friend. I want to take all the lessons and growth I've made from working on this game to another studio, and give it the same attention and passion that I feel I've brought to this game. I have faith in Wrel and the changes going forward, the path that was set before is long, difficult, and entirely worth it. Its been an absolute pleasure to work with you and riff ideas with you. You'll do your best, you always do.
As for my future, I plan on landing on my feet, continuing to move forward, and improving.
