What is a typical day in your life like? I get up at 4:30. I watch some YouTube, do some email, work on my writing or similar. I head to the gym at 7, shower and start my day around 8. I work in my home office or shop/lab, code and work on stuff, throughout the day. I could be busy all the way through to 8-9PM if I'm wrapped up in something, but not usually that busy.
the below is a reply to the above
You get up at 4:30 AM? Wow. Have you always been a morning person? Are other people on your team morning people so you decided to start early? I’m asking this because it seems like a lot of successful people wake up very early and work out before starting their workday. No, I never was until my neck injury. While recovering I couldn't sleep more than about 4-5 hours max and just got into the habit. Since it was so productive for me, I just kept it up!

Thanks for sharing. I wish you good health. Thanks!
Did you create Robocopy, or know who did? I use that very regularly and much more efficient than using the GUI. The secret dirt is that Robocopy was first written by MS colleague Kevin Allen, and he started sharing copies around in 1994ish. From there, and after many iterations and heavy-duty real-world feedback, robocopy ended up in the Windows Resource Kit, and then later merged into the core Windows package. In the beginning, Kevin was a very experienced programmer, but new to the Win32 API; so robocopy was one of his projects to educate himself about Windows programming. Later on, ITG used robocopy to routinely transfer many gigabytes of data around MS global offices, every night; it became very robust and battle-hardened. It is a long time now since Kevin was involved in the robocopy source code at all; it is maintained by the Windows team.
Did you create Microsoft Clippy? Will Clippy ever make a come back? Noooo... but I was around at the time. We have Clippy now in the form of Siri and Google Assistant and Cortana, but there's no picture. That's all it was though, an early digital assistant.
I read on a Microsoft devblog that when windows got ported to 64bit pinball 3d was not ported because of bugs and the developers not being able to understand the code/not having enough time. It's a shame, because it was such an awesome game and I spent many hours playing it as a kid. Was the code messy due to being ported from Sam and do you think it could have been ported given enough time and expertise? Basically what I did when I ported it was to maintain the central code "logic" loop of the game unchanged so that it would play just as it did on other platforms, and then "hooked" functionality coming out of it and going into it. So I rewrote the drawing code that did the actual drawing, but not he original code that wanted to do the drawing, if that makes sense. I changed the how, not why.
That meant, though, that at the very core of the game was a big bunch of code that we didn't touch or monkey with, because it 'just worked'. Apparently sometime after Vista, in 64-bit, there was a collision detection bug in Pinball.
From what I read, Raymond Chen looked at it and got the general idea of what was wrong but didn't want to touch the fragile old code. Raymond's one of the best debuggers I've met, so it wasn't a question of expertise but of time and resources.
Anyone on the team could have trivially fixed it I'm sure, but it sounds like no one "owned" the game anymore after I left, and it was more than just a random little bug to fix, it would have required a dev to be assigned to it, and there likely was no one free.
What is your favourite colour please? Well, I have four cars with blue interiors and I'm wearing a blue shirt and a blue watch and blue jeans. So probably blue.
If my son expresses interest in serious computer programming, where is a good place to start? C for Dummies? (I'm joking and I know terribly little about the topic, only enough to know backend is where it's at) Python, then Javascript. Build a website!
Hi! Just wanted to say, I still use MS-DOS regularly, on many of my older machines in my collection. Also Win3.x, Win9x etc How do you feel about computers becoming extremely dependent on 'cloud' services? I can still set up an old machine, install an old OS, install old software and have it all up and running within an hour or so, while modern software essentially requires cloud services for literally everything. What happens to that software once some random person out there decides that they don't want to support it anymore? Those cloud services go away? Are you concerned that future generations will not be able to experience anything from this era of computing? Considering computers were designed to be able to continually run the same software over and over as necessary, how can that apply if the bulk of this is lost when the cloud disappears? Or maybe this isn't a concern at all, and I'm just crazy...? I already have hardware that refused to work because the cloud service that backs it has been abandoned or the company has gone out of business.
I worry that things become dependent on externals that aren't reliable long term, and I know what you mean... but fortunately Windows, once activated, runs perfectly well offline forever, really.
I'm a fresh graduate with some experience and reading the knowledge you all have in the comments has made me feel very inferior. I only started coding in my university and I don't do it in my past time. Am I doing something wrong? I do enjoy programming but I try to keep a work life balance. Is that a thing in software development? Also did you ever approve a pull request by Bill? No, as long as you DO enjoy it when you're doing it, you're fine. There's an entire "spectrum" of people in the world and some of us have "special interests" with which we're a little obsessed, and tend to "hyperfocus". I'm one of those people but it's by no means the only way to do it!
I knew many great programmers who (a) didn't program in their spare time at home and (b) didn't continue to program recreationally after leaving it as a job.
If you can work regular 40 hours a week as a productive programmer, you'll be set!
the below is a reply to the above
Thank you so much for this! Are there any tips you'd like to give to fresh graduates like me? If you get a job at a large company like Microsoft, and decide you're not happy, try moving INTERNALLY before looking for another job. You could work for 5 different companies over your career and they could all be Google, for example. Culture goes through and through, but every team has its own.
the following is a later reply If you can put in a 35-40 hour week of solid work, you'll be fine. There are three buckets: the obsessives, like myself, who work as much as they can. Then the solid pros, who can turn out a ton of quality stuff in 40 hours. And then you have the slackers who surf Facebook at work and read reddit when they should be coding. As long as you're not in that group you're fine, and a balance is important. It is indeed a thing the successful people achieve it. It's not about how much code you write, it's about how much MORE time you spend coding than you want to, and that should be zero!
Lots of people are in careers they don't practice in their free time, in fact most. So it's a bonus if you're that way, but most people are NOT, so don't despair! You're normal!
If you're still answering, how much of the original Task Manager still lives in the modern Task Manager? Anyway, thanks for the AMA! You're a legend! I don't know for sure, but from looking at the app, and not the code, I'd expect about 60-70% of it?
Hopefully you’re still taking questions. I get a lot of crap by my peers about command line. Power shell is badass but I’m a cmd guy myself. I know we can do pretty much everything that cmd does in powershell and more, but idk. I like what I like, you know? Where do you stand on this? Honestly I'd be a CMD guy as well, but I'm really starting to lean towards using bash under WSL.
Have you ever looked the help for SET and FOR under CMD? It's where we put every piece of extra functionality, since you can't add keywords that might collide with people's script names, etc...
I didn’t use windows after windows 7 for about 5 years. Back in august 2019 I finally rebuilt and upgraded my old PC and installed windows 10. The task manager in windows 10 is so amazing and powerful. I would imagine it’s something you wanted to implement in the 90s but didn’t have the tools or time. Right? Indeed, I'm a big fan of the current task manager and what they've done with it! I wish there was a Dark mode, I wish it handled file lock tracking, and I've always got wish lists, but they've done a great job with it!
CIA_grade_LSD: Why does the file transfer time remaining progress bar start at like 15 hours and then drop to two minutes and then stick at 99% for five minutes? (An exaggeration I admit. I know you and your colleagues do your best, but I am curious why this hasnt gotten much more accurate over the years.) androidethic: Yes, we need a justification as to why the windows file operation estimations are so random/inaccurate! They're the worst estimate out there, except for all the others.
Mac is just as bad. It's a hard problem. I worked on it briefly, and to help solve it I kept track of the average time it had taken for a whole range of operations, like creating, moving, deleting, renaming a file, or moving a block of N bytes, etc. Then multiply by the number of those operations that remain. But even that can be wildly off in degenerate cases.
Do you ever get laid? Not since your Mom kicked me out.
Why has windows task manager never had a true force quit? End Process is a true force quit.
What was your team's opinion on linux at the time? And what's yours opinion too? I like it a lot, I was an early adopter back in 1993-1994 and tried to contribute some code for parsing IIDs, though I don't know if it's still in there. I hope it is, becaue then I'd have code in Windows, Mac Office, and Linux. I'd be everywhere :-)
Now that we have WSL 2, though, I do most of my Linux work under Windows!
How much of the original DOS code is still in modern OSs? None whatsoever. In fact, the only commonality at all would likely be the PGM header on disk still traces its original layout to MS-DOS.
But rest assured there's NO code from MS-DOS inside NT, for example. It was a complete clean-slate design.
Was it you responsible for the atrocious naming conventions in WIN32? Your username is dhbt12 :-)
What current developments in the world of operating systems are you watching with eager anticipation? File systems and LLVM seem to be the rage right now, at least from where I sit. Containers are cool to me, like Docker! That's really the biggest development of recent years I think!
the below has been split into two
* What's your compensation? - Zero, since I'm retired and there's no pension.
* Have you met Bill Gates? - Yes, a number of times. When I was first hired he had me and a few other recent hires over to his house for burgers and beer and it was quite nice!
What's your opinion of free and open-source software? Broad, I know. I saw your response about WinRAR saying you like to license your software, but do you hold a similar sentiment in tossing a coin to the devs of foss software you might use? I love it, I just don't have any illusions that making a piece of code open-source somehow leads to higher quality. It makes it more available to me, which is great, but in reality, on a typical project there are going to be 1-5 people who really look at the code and then a dozen the sort of know it to make changes, and then consumers of the code who just call it. I don't see that those 1-5 people are any brighter than the people who'd be responsible for a product in a proprietary environment.
Now at a certain scale, like the Linux kernel maybe, you've got enough eyeballs looking at it that it makes a difference... that I could see!
What's the idea behind SYSKEY? As I understand it, its function is to encrypt something called the SAM (Security Account Manager) database. This database stores hashes of user passwords, and is used to authenticate users when they supply their password.
Hey Dave, what do you think the future of the windows OS will be? Is a cloud-based OS possible, potentially limiting computer hardware? As a total guess, I imagine our experience will eventually be just a UI device locally and everything else happens in the cloud on server hardware. So as you say, at some point your client hardware is "good enough" and then companies compete on the merits of their back-end services.
Do you know Mike Toutonghi? , he used to work at Microsoft, now he started a new blockchain project called The Verus project. By name and email but not well enough to recognize him at the mall today, I'd say!
If you had to redo windows, what would you most like to change? What do you regret most? What do you like most? The Format dialog needs to be redone! And Task Manager is likely my favorite...
Android or iPhone? Beer or wine? Ginger or Mary Ann? iPhone. Beer. Can't it be both? It's an island, after all.
the below is a reply to the above
I figured the iPhone since you have Mac's in the lab. I figured beer also since you can't shift a 4 speed with a glass off wine between your legs. Nice garage BTW. However i wasnt ready for both, it's an island after all. Touche. I tired to compile my first bit of code from GitHub today. I failed miserably. It would install but wouldn't run. I'll keep at it. Make sure you're in a clean empty folder. Try the code from Episode 11, I just used it so I know that works! Clone it and build it in PlatformIO with no changes, and that'll tell you if your dev environment is set up and working properly.
I cant connect to my cloud, can you download it for me? I'd love to, but I'm out of paper. Can you fax me some?
What amazes you the most when you compare technology from the 90's to now? GPUs!
Is it wrong of me to only ever end task manager with itself? Software Seppuku.
Probably too many comments and very late to the game, but here it goes! I teach Comp Sci at an international school. Would you be willing to give a small webinar talk to my students? They would just be so happy to hear from you as would I! Anyway, regardless, thanks for the many, many hours of enjoyment! Maybe after Covid, but I'm not a big fan of Zoom lectures! I just did one for the U of R, though, and if you check my channel there are two that I have done for the University of Regina that you might find useful for your students...
You can email me at [email protected] with info about the school and what topic you would like, etc, and I can see if it's a good fit for schedule and topic!
What computers do you personally at home? Windows? Linux? Mac? All three!
Why are processes able to hang to the point that task manager is unable to kill them? At that point there must be kernel corruption or something going on in a driver or well below the surface, I guess. If TM can't kill it, no one can, and it's truly hung.
Did you ever meet the genius who wrote the Space Cadet Pinball theme song? No, who wrote it? Matt Ridgeway?
Hi Dave, loved the videos on task manager Do you have any thoughts on modern C / C++ replacements like Zig and Rust (respectively)? I think its cool if memory access is indeed provably safe but you get code nearly as optimal as C, but I've got to learn more about them!
Did you like the windows phone? Never had one, started after I left, but I heard nice things about the very last one before it went away...
Hi Dave, Why doesn’t File Explorer automatically refresh to show new files in a folder, such as downloads? Seems such an obvious glitch! Also, how do I get the login screen on Windows 10? I push space, esc, mouse clicks, enters... and nothing happens. Then poof, it shows up. Why is this so unresponsive? It does.
In fact I know it does, because I have a patent on some of it!
Not sure why yours wound't be working, your system might have a third party piece of software that has broken File System Change notifications.
Was the time on Microsoft fun? It really was. I miss the people and the environment, and I especially miss lunch!
i’ve found 15+ 0-days in the shell32 API when doing a vuln analysis of explorer.exe. You can read my work at https://hyp3ri0n-ng.github.io! What’s it like to write really buggy code :P? I sense that high school was hard for you socially.
I’m sure I remember owning the pinball game as a separate standalone title before it was in windows? Can you explain the deal with that? Or am I misremembering Plus Pack!
You're a legend, can't believe I missed this. I'll post this here, if you don't answer it I'll have a good copy/paste for later. What are your thoughts on the sethc.exe / accessibility exploit? It's worked as far back as XP, and still works today in Windows 10, last time I checked. Windows Server 2003 and 2008 as well. Is checking the integrity of OS files before they're executed just not a priority? https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/222193/description-of-the-windows-file-protection-feature
Why ctl+alt+delete? An IBM engineer (David Bradley, I think) picked that combination to serve as a hardware reset. You can't fake it, you can't get around it. The PC knows it's really C_A_D when you do it.
Why that particular combination, you'd have to ask him!
What's the furthest you've gotten into a project that ended up not panning out? Was it something you really wanted to get working or were you relieved to move on? I'm a student studying engineering right now and reading these answers is extremely motivational; your passion for computers is awesome! Thanks for doing this. I spent about a year on an early prototype of Media Center that I was attached to but got killed. They did do a Media Center later, of course, but I had started 2-3 years ahead, but couldn't get funding.
Why has the Windows she'll been so bad for so long? I don't know, but I'll see you in he'll.
Do you still work at Microsoft? Do you still use only Microsoft stuff? No retired in 2003. I use a lot of MS stuff, but my main laptop is a MacBook and I use a Mac for video.
Do you own any Apple products or use them for work? I own all the Apple products except the new headphones, pretty much! I'm retired now though!
Is the workculture of Microsoft at the time very different than now? How much does Bill Gates' leadership impact the company? What changes had his departure bring? It is indeed very different under Satya than Bill, and the changes are widespread. But I left before Satya started, so I'm not really qualified to speak on them!
What are your thoughts on the age old trick of "Opening Task Manager to stop programs from freezing or being slow", is there some merit to doing that or is it just a simple coincidence? Total coincidence, honest! Task Manager, at that level, is just a windows app with a message pump. It's existence doesn't do anything that solitaire or paint would not also!
No, but there's a great meme with the Star Wars general about how apps work better with Task Manager open because "fear will keep them in line".
It's purely psychological, though. TM doesn't do anything by running the calc or paint wouldn't also provide!
Did you work on Windows ME? If so.. What the hell happened to that OS that made it so terrible? I had kernal errors every week. Nope! My work on the shell would have been backported to it, but I didn't work directly on 98 or M3, other than they used our NT version of the shell code by then I think.
Did you make any contingency for when Task Manager stops responding? Yes, lots! Check the video the "Secret Life of Task Manager" for more dirt, but there are MANY things it does to help prevent you ever being stuck with no task manager:
https://youtu.be/f8VBOiPV-_M
If not asked yet If this is correct, as posted in Regina awhile ago iirc I saw a post saying you’re from Regina, Canada Is that true? If so that’s awesome to hear that someone from my local area made one of my favourite no internet game and the basic fundamentals of the most used OS for computers Yes indeed, that's me!
Why is the documentation for WPA so bad and scarce? I have to refer to Bruce Dawson's years old blog to decipher some of the columns names. Are there any plans to add a comprehensive manual for it? Windows Product Activation? Columns? Sorry, are you using WPA for something else?
Can I intern for you? If you know how to write a Material-themed admin-style Dashboard in React, can consume a REST api in doing so, and have some experience with iPhone apps an Unity, then maybe yes!
I was actually looking for an intern this past summer to write a phone and web app...
how did you assured code quality and readability? did you use static analyzers/ unit tests or what? Check out the "Secret History of Task Manager" video for a description of "NTStress" and how we nightly tested, but there were professional testers, every line of code was code-reviewed, and so on.
My understanding is it's quite different now, though!
When you say you worked on Windows activation, was it for more than a day? That's an odd question. Can I ask why you think it might have just been for a day? Clue me in to what you're hinting at and I'll fill you in on the rest!
Why do I need to press 3 buttons and 1 click to open task manager? Because you choose to fail!
You can do it with two clicks or one simultaneous multikey press!
Do you think WPA was a success? I think so! It helped stem casual piracy, wasn't "cracked" for at least 18 months after we released it, and didn't unduly inconvenience users too often, I hope.
We were really aiming for the 95% case. Trying to catch the 95% of piracy that is people sharing keys, reusing their own keys on too many machines, getting keys off the web, that sort of thing. I think it accomplished that.
How did you feel about windows 8? Same way you do.
Who invented the blue screen of death? John Vert. He said:
"Back in 1991 I wrote the original code for Windows NT 3.1 that put the video screen back into text mode and the routines to put text on it (and a truly gnarly bit of code it was!). I used the white on blue colors for two reasons.
* The MIPS workstations we were using for the MIPS port had firmware that presented a boot option screen in white on blue, so it made sense that the bugcheck screen would match.
* I (and many others) were using SlickEdit as our text editor and at the time its default color scheme was also white on blue.
I believe Mark Lucovsky wrote the original code that dumped a bunch of text to the screen. This was a bugcode and a stack dump, resulting in a bunch of useless hex numbers which product support would occasionally dutifully transcribe from the customers and include in the bug report.
There was no "typesetting" as we used standard VGA text mode on PCs.
I don't know the history of the Win3.1/Win9x blue screens, I think the fact they were the same color is just coincidence."
But can you make sick stick figure death match animations in QBASIC? No, but I do a mean Bill the Cat ascii art!
How could you? Sometimes you just gotta say WTF.

What are you working on these days? Mostly on programming tutorials and nostalgic "Windows War Stories" on my youtube channel:
http://www.youtube.com/c/davesgarage
[removed] That's me! Went to Miller high, worked at ISM and SaskTel during college, etc!
Here is my question. Im a cuban teenager (17) and my dream is work is be a developer. What kind of mini works i can do for learn programation before University? Do as many little program tasks as you can, and make sure you complete them, and SAVE them for the future so you can look back!
Try writing a little program to convert back and forth between roman numbers and regular numbers. Or fund the next highest multiple of 32, or count the number of it bits set in a byte. Or the real difference in seconds between two dates, that sort of thing. Real problems that you have to solve will help a great deal as they act as sort of a "forcing function" to make you get to the very end.
Do you like macaroni & cheese? Kraft Dinner all the way. And I eat with little packets of designer ketchup.
Wait...you didn't built paint? I'm out. Nope, sorry. But I owned calc for a while, back when we were adding infinite precision math to it!
Hi, If Microsoft wanted to, they could make it impossible to activate a pirated copy of windows using 3rd party software. So why aren't they making it impossible? Not sure what you meant by 3rd party software. Are you saying Windows can actually be activated even if pirated? That'd be news to me, but anything's possible.
What was the criteria for “tilt” on space cadet pinball? I played that game for hours as a kid. Spacebar would add a little "action" to the table, if I recall, and you could strike a balance of adding so much so often... but too much (ie: smash space too much) and it'll tilt.
Did you ever have to interview anybody at Microsoft? If so, what types of questions would you ask back then? What was your interview like going into Microsoft? Oh yeah, I've interviewed dozens or hundreds I'd bet. I'd like to ask "calibrating questons" like "Give me a funtion that takes a number and returns the next highest multiple of 32" or "count the number of bits that are set in it" to see how their basic coding skills were.
Then I usually liked to give a problem I was working on to see what it'd be like to actually work with the person.
I interviewed three times, once as an intern, once as full time, and then once to move to the Shell group. Each as an all-day affair, and very arduous. You have 2-3 hour long interviews in the AM, then a lunch interview, then 2-3 more hour long interviews in the PM, then a supper thing, etc... it's a long day!
ImRandyRU: What have you done for me lately? Edit: it was a joke... dabigchina: NT is the foundation that all modern windows OS's build on, so a lot. Zeusifer: I guarantee some of OP's code still exists in Windows 10. Most of it, to be honest. As a guess I'd say 75% still there.
Hey man, I had a wicked dump this morning and now my toilet is blocked. Any idea's? More roughage in your diet.
It was so satisfying to push the 3x5 disks into the slot and have the button pop out, and make a vroom vroom sound. Ah, the old days. What's your favorite MS-Dos game from the 90s? I actually came to the PC after MS-DOS, so I wasn't a DOS gamer... I suppose in those days it was primarily C64 and Amiga games. I do remember being fond of Sim City, like everyone, but also of a game called "Seven Cities of Gold"...

Mobile Games, some thoughts on FF: Brave Exvius and War of the Visions: FF Brave Exvius

Mobile Games, some thoughts on FF: Brave Exvius and War of the Visions: FF Brave Exvius
So I downloaded every free FF mobile game I could find on the Android store. Talking about the actual mobile games, not PS1 games that were ported or whatever. Let's check both of the Brave Exvius games, here we go.
For my thoughts on FFXV: A New Empire and FF: Record Keeper, have a look here:

FF Brave Exvius
Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. Released in 2015 and developed by A-lim/Gumi. Modeled after their previous game, Brave Frontier, but with more focus on the story. They got Yoshitaka Amano to do a bunch of promo art for this one.
Cool logo art! Actual new music that sounds pretty good actually! Cutscenes after every mission and a lot of story to drive the action! Compared to A New Empire especially, but Record Keeper as well, this feels even more like an actual game that has a story it wants to tell. Not just a gambling hall for fanservice. There's even areas where you get to walk around some times! It's pretty decent.
Apparently the story takes some turns later on, but it's pretty standard, inoffensive fantasy early on. Welcome to generic fantasy land where the elemental crystals are, one by one, being destroyed by a group of Evil Dudes in black armour. Two knights, Rain (your main guy) and his mentor and friend Lasswel, return from a mission only to find the earth crystal under attack. A mystery girl shows up and gives Rain the amazing power to summon fanservice from across the dimensions!
So now you get your roulette wheel ability to call upon the help of random Final Fantasy characters, some other cameos and some original characters. You get one free spin on the wheel each day, and can also spend whatever 'Lapis' currency you earn to unlock more characters! (Or spend actual real money of course). Build your party of five, raise their levels and gear. Throw some money at Square to unlock more gear, characters and powerups. You know the drill. You can also call upon the help of other players' main characters at the start of each mission. You'll be overpowered no matter what you do so it doesn't really matter how you build your team.
Rain the hothead has a fire spell, the cold and serious soldier Laswell has blizzard magic. Some though went into this! It's cute. Just like their bromance! These two are so very gay for each other. I mean, sure, they get a conversation early on where Rain talks about girls or whatever, to confirm for the audience that it's totally no homo. But it's pretty clear these dudes are into each other. Read all about it in my fanfic.
Anyway. The characters play off each other well. It's not always clear what tone the game is going for. And I wouldn't exactly call the dialogue funny. But it's all charming and lighthearted. Fina joins the gang later on, having lost her memories as the mystery girl that gave Rain his Vision powers. She's alright, a bit of an airhead so far. And there's more characters that join after that.
The writing is in no way on the level of an actual Final Fantasy game, but it's been good enough to keep me interested well beyond where the combat started to bore me. I mean, the dialogue and events are very cliche, but the bigger story is interesting enough to play for fifteen minutes here and there. Until I get bored of it and go back to whatever I was doing.
If anything, the pacing is a bit too slow and it takes long for things to happen. Yet every battle gets a little cutscene. So you have a lot of conversations that go nowhere and talk about nothing. "I sense a big monster up ahead". "It sure is cold here!" Etc.
So what do you actually do in the game? Combat gauntlets. It's like a more fleshed out version of Record Keeper. You travel from location to location on the world map. Each location has five or so missions. Each mission then consists of a chain of battles that you play back to back. This leads to interesting situations where your health and status effects carry over from one fight to the next. And you can use the first couple of battles to charge up your limit breaks or summons and unleash them on the inevitable boss in battle five.
You give commands to each of your party members at the same time. They all have a bunch of customisable skills, magic and items available. And then you execute all of them before the enemies get a turn. Timing your party's attacks can lead to chains which increase damage. Most fights are over before the enemy even realizes what's happening. But it feels really really satisfying to hand out commands, tap all your party members and watch them fill the screen with flashy explosions. So yeah. Simple battle system, but satisfying and with some unique twists to it that make it stand out compared to a standard turn based system. I assume that the actual challenging content is in the PVP Arena and the limited events, though the ones I played were still super easy.
Some locations on the world map have an optional dungeon area that you can freely explore for loot and side quests. And there are a few towns with shops, where you get to walk around, talk to npc's and pick up sidequests. The dialogue here is not very interesting, so I started skipping the towns after a while. You don't really need to buy better gear or items, even the extensive crafting system the game has, has been entirely unnecessary so far. There's a ton of levelling systems, ability upgrades etc to play with. I dabbled. And then moved on. I imagine it all gets more challenging later on?
You can send the characters you're not actively using on missions for loot and xp. There's an arena. And a bunch of themed events, re-enacting scenes and fights from other FF games.
And just like in Record Keeper, there's plenty of real money gambling to be done, but it can all be ignored pretty easily.
The music is all original and pretty good. Battle themes, world map music. It's good. The art looks good but feels a bit... I don't know. RPGMaker ish? Slapped together art assets from the generic "fantasy rpg" library. The vertical screen space does allow them to add really pretty backgrounds to battles, with moving clouds and distant vistas.
And the character sprites in combat are absolutely fantastic. Every single character gets a ton of unique animations and they have a lot of personality to them. I love my chocobo riding dude, one of the original characters, whose black chocobo just runs off and drags him off screen after every battle. It gets a bit hard to see what's happening when all your attacks are firing off at once. But credit where it's due, they spent a lot of effort on making hundreds of neat looking characters for this.
Also, it needs to be said. The menus are a nightmare once again. The log in screen is nice and clean, with pretty Amano art. After that it's just a cluttered mess of ads, notifications, every single pixel screaming for your attention. You get bombarded with literally four different "daily log in bonus" screens before they allow you into the main menu. And once there it takes me minutes staring at it to figure out where I want to be clicking. And I still get confused about which icon represents what. Thankfully, if you just want to play the story, there's a big "World" button that takes you to the world map, and you can ignore the dozen other menus completely.
Be prepared to see a lot of download and loading windows as well. You can turn some of this off. But the game regularly needs to download an extra 2MB, 8MB, 140MB of data for new environments, ads, whatever. After putting the game away for a day, I tried starting it back up only to get stuck for half an hour in loops of downloading, failing to log in, crashing, more downloading, etc. It eventually solved itself. But that's a bit counterproductive for a game that you should be able to jump in and just play whenever you have a minute to spare.
So yeah. I don't know. It's a decent game. I liked the cute style and tone of Record Keeper better, but there's definitely more depth to Exvius. The story feels like it will go places eventually. Don't expect deep character development or hugely original story beats. But this is a fine rpg to play if you're looking for a free one on your phone. Now onwards to the prequel! Sequel? ?
War of the Visions FF Brave Exvius
War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. Developed by Gumi, based on their previous game The Alchemist Code, and released in 2019. A lot of money and effort went into this one. Oh how far mobile games have come.
Going by the naming scheme, this is a prequel. [googling...] Yes indeed it is! A long time ago in the world of Lapis, a bunch of kingdoms are in a precarious peace. Some hooded mystery folks fake a border dispute, pretending to be knights of Leonis, attacking a princess from Hourne. King Oelde Leonis drags along his son Mont Leonis to check it out. Mont Leonis has a magic ring that, just like in Brave Exvius, allows him to summon in 'Visions'. Characters from other FF games or original to this game, that fight alongside him in battle. Except this time, the battles are top down, turn based strategy! Like in FF Tactics.
And boy do they emulate Tactics with this game. Blonde prince Mont has a dark haired twin Sterne who turns to the dark side, for the obligatory bromance-turned-rivalry that was core to FF Tactics. Their kingdom is named after lions. And the entire tone and set up at the start feels like it's trying to hit that calm before the storm of the first chapter of FF Tactics. I played about the first two 'scenes' of the first chapter. Which means about twenty battles and cutscenes. Just like Brave Exvius, it drags a little some times and they stretch the story out with so many fights. The politics and mystery is intriguing enough though. It's neat and fairly well done, but the obvious comparison to FF Tactics doesn't do it justice and only emphasises just how much worse the writing is here. Even though it's all pretty decent if you look at it as its own thing.
Brave Exvius sounds like it went places later on, so this game might get way way more interesting later on as well. Or it might devolve into generic power fantasy good versus evil. Who knows. It starts out less cliché, less predictable than Brave Exvius or Record Keeper did, so it feels like it'll be less of a grind to get to the good stuff. With early set up for some twists and drama to come. War is gonna break out and everyone is gonna blame everyone while the hooded gang of mystery baddies snickers in the background, that's my prediction.
Anyhoo. The music is really good. They could do with some more variety. FF Tactics had like ten battle themes to shuffle around. This game has... a battle and a boss theme? The cutscenes and presentation are nice. The voice acting, is there. The writing is... good enough. It's better than Brave Exvius' writing was for sure. And I like that both these games genuinely seem to care about their stories. As I said, War of the Visions tries to go for a more serious tone, with political intrigue, scheming and all that. Just the dialogue itself is often stilted and cheesy. And the voice actors don't exactly put in a great effort to lift up the source material either. But hey, there's voice acting! For every mission! The cast for this game is huge.
So yeah, the game's production values are lovely. And it's all in pretty 3D graphics that actually looks like the concept art. I wouldn't mind a version of this to play on my Switch or PC. For lack of an actual FF Tactics sequel.
Ryuji Ohara does a fantastic Akihiko Yoshida impression with the character art. Filtered through a more anime/Fire Emblem style. Which is to say, all the character designs are beautiful and nice to look at. The 3D art tries to emulate the look of those CG cutscenes they did for FF Tactics: War of the Lions, including a sketch filter on the shadows and Yoshida's sketchy shading lines all over the characters. It looks cool! All of the art and design in this game is really well done.
Except, as is the trend for these mobile games it seems, the interface design and menus. They look nice, but are once again a nightmare to navigate. In battles things can get so cluttered it's hard to see where your units can move to. And it's often tricky to select the right tile or enemy. Especially since you're doing this by dragging your units around the screen with your fingers, they don't move tile-by-tile like in most turn based games like this, instead you have analog control and your units run around freely in every direction and often they just snap back to a previous tile they were on or they run back to a different tile when you were trying to tap which target to attack. It's fiddly. There's plenty of camera options so you can compensate for this thankfully, and there's no negative consequence for moving to the wrong tile. Just drag them back to where you wanted them.
In the main menu and all the various upgrade, equipment, crafting and slot machine screens, it's hard to find the information you need and the particular button you want to push. Again. Every button is equally screaming for your attention so the eyes don't know where to focus. I mean, just look at the main menu and see how long it takes you to find the button to continue the main story! You know, the main mode of the game that should be obvious and big and standing out? The only button that slightly stands out from the rest and grabs your attention just a bit more, is of course the slot machine where you go to gamble to unlock new characters. Because of course.
Ok sorry, enough rambling from my graphic designer brain. On to the rest of the game!
So, turn based, grid based, strategy battles. Like you'd see in FF Tactics, Fire Emblem, Into the Breach. It's a tried and true system, and this game's version is pretty good. It's a less punishing, slightly faster version of FF Tactics. And compared to the other mobile games I've played so far, the difficulty is decently balanced this time. I'm not instakilling every fight in one turn. I've even had some of my units knocked out. And the game requires you to position and move somewhat cleverly. It has jobs, skills, damage types and elemental stuff similar to FF Tactics. So spears can hit two tiles away and do piercing damage. Terrain height matters. Archers are a pain in the ass when they're up on a hill and out of reach of your melee units. Magic can hit multiple targets. Etc.
Unique to this game is that attacking will charge a unit's ability points which they can use to execute their stronger attacks. So your units start the battle with only their basic attack, and you have to attack a couple turns before you get to spam your stronger magic abilities. Mages do start a battle with some AP. And every unit has an element attached, for example earth, which would be weak to wind and strong against lightning enemies. So yea, strategic depth and enemies that don't go down in one hit so you might actually need to use some of that depth.
The maps/missions mostly take place in generic looking grassy hills and stuff. Haven't had a pretty church or bridge or iconic looking waterfalls like Tactics had. Again with the comparisons. But missions are well designed from a tactical perspective. The locations use height and cover pretty well, with funnels to lead enemies in to, corners to hide behind.
Besides the main story, which is just a straight line of cutscenes and battles. There's an optional mode where you can do side missions and slowly unlock different locations on a FF Tactics looking world map. And there's the usual special events with bossfights from other games in the series. Chocobo expeditions to send units away and find loot. A bunch of tutorial missions, pvp arena, pve coop missions, player guilds to join. Achievements, bonus objectives and literal bingo cards with challenges to unlock rewards. Log in bonuses. Features! And they'll probably add more, since this game only just released.
And there's big skill trees to unlock new abilities, each ability can then be upgraded separately, equipment can be crafted and upgraded, units can level, 'awaken', etc. Units can have multiple jobs. You can equip cards with bonus stats for that unit and the whole party, which adds some incentive to spec a character towards a certain role. For example you could give your thief lady a card that gives her higher accuracy, lower defence and raises dexterity for her entire team. In other words, lots and lots of customizability, and as far as I can tell, there's lots of different directions you can level each character. Not just 'make them stronger'. And of course lots of opportunities to get items and boosts for each character for real money or for the in-game currency you earn through playing.
Because of the slightly higher difficulty and complexity of the battles, I was more motivated to actually dive into all the leveling systems a bit more this time. Still not enough to make me throw money at it. It's still easy enough to overpower your characters and kill the challenge with all the free stuff you get. Nevermind the fact that, aside from your five person party you can invite another player's units to join you in the sixth slot. Just like in Brave Exvius. Except this time doing so will cost you gil. Units at your own level are cheaper, level 80 powerhouses will cost you all your savings. Which is a nice way to keep some balance. I chose to save my gil and do most of the battles with just my own units.
On the other hand, the second thing the godawful tutorial does is tell you how to turn on 'auto battle'. The first thing the tutorial does is show you how to spend currency to unlock characters. Almost like they want you to just spend money and not play the battles. And jeez. Tutorials in all these games are universally awful. Endless walls of text with too much information at once. While they just tell you to 'push this, ok now push this button' without actually explaining why you should do these things. Every time the game forces a tutorial on me it feels like someone ripping the phone from my hand and just playing the game for me while rattling off a bunch of information at me. And if you're unlucky, you can get stuck in a loop of one tutorial after the other explaining all the different menus and systems one at a time without time in between to process what it just showed you and try for yourself. The battle tutorials are the same way, just playing the fight for you and throwing terms and information at you without letting you practice and learn on your own.
Also, I wish all the neat side characters in my squad got some cutscenes and plot. The art oozes personality and I wanna get to know these cool gals and girls. But since most of them are blank 'Visions' you get through some non canon gambling menu, all the characterization is tucked away in a text box somewhere. And maybe some art cards you can unlock. Oh and the rarer units get a little quote and a short catwalk animation when you get them. It all hints at character, without actually writing a character. They have zero interaction with the actual plot or the main characters and I don't know who any of these people are. This was fine in Record Keeper and Brave Exvius where it was just Lightning and Squall fighting alongside me, and only a handful of original characters. But most of the units I've unlocked in this game so far have been originals.
But! Out of the four mobile games I've checked so far, this one is easily the most impressive by far. Beautiful presentation. It all feels like it could have been one of Square's DS or Playstation games. Instead of just a cheap mobile game. It has decent storytelling and a plot that seems like it isn't just a predictable lighthearted fantasy adventure, or whatever hollow void of emptiness A New Empire was. And most of all, a fun battle system that actually requires some effort! I'll definitely be playing more of this. And with this game, I don't get bored of it and have to stop playing after four battles. I actually spent an evening playing just this. It's no FF Tactics, or even Tactics Advance. But it's a good enough alternative.
Though beware, the fancy presentation comes at the cost of a lot of data and big downloads. Also, my phone gets really hot after a while. Also also, because of the slower battle system, missions take way longer than the short and sweet battles in Record Keeper or Brave Exvius. So it's a little harder to boot this game up for just a minute, do a short battle, and move on with your life a minute later. It requires a little more time commitment. You could of course pause the battle and come back to it. Or just auto battle if you're in a hurry. But know that this game is a little less built like a quick mobile game, and more like one of its slower tactics brethren.
(SQUARE-ENIX PLEASE IF YOU'RE READING THIS. GIVE YASUMI MATSUNO THE RESOURCES, DEV TEAM AND ENGINE FOR THIS GAME AND LET HIM MAKE WHATEVER HE WANTS WITH IT! please)

To be continued?
Next time, Dissidia Opera Omnia! And All the Bravest? And I'll probably play some more of War of the Visions. A little hesitant to throw €15,- at the two Dimensions games... All these other games have been free so far. I love the other FF games that Matrix Software has done, so I'm sure they're good.
Anyone actually finish the stories for these two Exvius games? Any opinions? Also, what is an Exvius?

No-Hacks Guide - How to use Kaeru WFC and Wiimmfi with your Nintendo DS!

In order to connect to the internet with your Nintendo DS, you will need to set up a WiFi network that is either using WEP password security or is unsecured and has no password. Unfortunately the Nintendo DS is not compatible with most modern security methods, so it can be confusing for a Wiimmfi newcomer to be able to connect and play online. This is a two part guide — Part 1 shows you how to set up a compatible access point for the DS, and Part 2 shows you how to change your DNS settings to use Wiimmfi!
Method 1: Set up a WiFi network with no password on your router.
Many routers nowadays do not include the option to use WEP encryption for the password, as it’s an ancient and easily-hacked security method for WiFi networks. However, setting up a side/guest network with no password is a viable method that most users choose.
To do this, you need to log into your router and change its settings. Here is a good article to start you off. If you know what router or ISP you use, it’s also easy to Google “how to log in to X router” or “how to set up guest network X router” (X being the name of your router or Internet Service Provider.)
You may also want to consider hiding the SSID to add a layer of security while using it; you can still connect to a Hidden Network by manually inputting the name of the WiFi network in your DS’s WFC Settings. It’s also highly recommended to only have this guest network on while you’re using your Wiimmfi, and to turn it off in-between.
Method 2: Android Phone using Mobile Hotspot
Some Android devices have the option to set up your own WiFi hotspot without any password. Currently, iPhones require a password to use Personal Hotspot (which uses WPA security) and are not compatible with Nintendo DS games.
Method 3: Nintendo WiFi USB Connector
If all else fails and you are not able to use the above two options for whatever reason, you are able to connect using the Nintendo WiFi USB Connector. HOWEVER, because it’s from the mid-2000s and has been discontinued, setting up the connector requires Windows XP or Windows Vista; if you’re using a laptop with a newer version of Windows, you’ll need to set up a Virtual Machine. This is a guide to setting up your very own Virtual Machine. It’s relatively easy if you set it up step-by-step; make sure virtualization is enabled in your BIOS settings.
Once that is done and you have successfully set up your Windows XP Virtual Machine, follow this simple step-by-step guide, and now you will have Kaeru WFC through your Nintendo WiFi USB Connector! Note: after the initial setup is complete, it’s very simple to use; all you’ll need to do is boot up the Virtual Machine and plug in the USB to connect to WiFi connection.
Now that you have a compatible access point ready, you can begin connecting with Kaeru WFC! (http://wfc.kaeru.world) One of their staff members, shutterbug2000, discovered the nds-constraint exploit that made it possible to use Wiimmfi without any hacks, and they have an official DNS for people to use. I highly recommend using this one because it has better compatibility with things such as the Poké Classic Network for Gen 4 and Gen 5 games. To connect to Kaeru WFC and start playing online:
1. Enter the Nintendo WFC Settings menu, which can be found in any WFC-enabled game.
2. Select "Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Settings".
3. Set up a new connection if you haven't already done so, then select the connection slot you wish to use.
4. Scroll down and set "Auto-obtain DNS" to "No", then set Primary DNS to 178.62.43.212 and Secondary DNS to 1.1.1.1.. Select "OK" to confirm.
5. Save the settings and then exit out of the WFC menu.
The link above has more info for connecting with DSiWare and Flipnote Studio, and they also have people available to help you troubleshoot errors/issues in their Discord server.
Thanks for reading, I hope someone finds this helpful!

d100 New Planes of Existence!

(Now, I know this says it's a completed list, but as of posting there are three empty slots, but the old one no longer has traction and we can probably fill those three in no time)
Die Roll Result
1 The Market: An infinite bazaar that is quite well known. People from across the multiverse come here to buy and sell goods. It is said that literally everything can be found for sale here. There is no government or restrictions on what can be sold, but there is a seemingly infinite legion of clay golems that stop any thieves or murderers. The place is so huge that there is a group of urchins that will help you find your way to what you want, but they demand quite a lot of money for it.
2 The Dusk: A good equivalent of the Shadowfell. While the Shadowfell represents the vile things that lurk in the dark, the Dusk represents the beauty and inspiration found in the night sky. The place is ruled by living versions of the Material Planes' constellations.
3 The Realm of Infinite Fists: A plane artificially made by a spellcaster. The entire plane is made up of tons upon tons of fists that beats anyone that enters the plane to death. The plane's portals can be disguised as everyday objects. For example, a pair of underpants.
4 The Dojo: A single massive training ground, made for a long-dead emperor's expansive army. Hundreds of fighters, monks, and anyone else that wants to learn the ways of combat study here. If you die here from sparring someone, you come back to life immediately afterwards.
5 The World: The god of mimics and doppelgangers, disguised as a material plane. Literally everything here is a mimic and everyone that isn't another traveler is a doppelganger. This is like their afterlife.
6 The Alley: An eternal ghetto where it is always midnight. Once the HQ for a street gang lead by a powerful sorcerer. Somehow, the gang was trapped here. Some of their descendants have devolved into strange creatures while others have formed tribes that worship the old boss, who they refer to as Boss. They speak in gibberish, but someone who understands Thieves Cant will immediately know what they mean.
7 Tartarus: Not a plane. This is the only spot in the entire multiverse that is totally empty. There is no space, time, or matter here. The worst of the worst are imprisoned here by the gods. You'd best leave and hope they don't follow you.
8 The Phylactery: An entire demiplane, converted into a phylactery by a lich. The lich knows you are here.
9 The Mirror: A copy of the Material Plane. It is used as a sandbox by powerful spellcasters. A spellcaster can control the entire world here using only a thought. You may be able to get back to the Material Plane using the mirrors of other spellcasters.
10 Electricus: a more techy version of Mecanus, with exposed wires and tesla bolts instead of cogs. Populated by metal constructs. It's theorized that this plane is involved in a complex calculation, that has been going on for ages.
11 The Orphanage: nobody knows exactly what this lifeless plane was when it was created, just some decades ago. It quick became a gigantic orphanage though, as people dropped orphans they didn't want to take care of here. Now, some better people built houses for the orphans, and provided them with means to live and leave. Maybe the kids there never grow up and some children on the Material Plane dream of getting to go there. Or maybe the kids still grow up and kick people out into random realms once they go over 18.
12 Ultra Fractal: a plane in which size does not matter. It's composed of a giant net, with coloured lines at perpendicular angles spaced regularly. They can easily be bent by hand though, which changes the composition of spacetime in that area, scaling things appropriately.
13 Vacuum: a plane without air, or a ground. It has just some small islands floating in space, inhabited by slimy, anaerobic humanoids who can leap between the islands effortlessly.
14 Sovereignty: a massive city-plane, ruled by a god-king, who conquered the entire plane in the dawn of time. They have unequaled military power, but are unable to leave their plane.
15 Plane of Euphoria: Looks like your ideal location, but in fact is a demiplane of some cosmic entity. You feel complete happiness and are extremely unwilling to leave. This plane in fact uses any living creature that ends up there as a battery to power the cosmic entity.
16 Land of the Snowy Mountains: is rumored to be the true home and origin of the goliath race. It is a series of unending, snow capped mountain ranges where only the fittest survive.
17 The Eternal Battlefield - An endless flat plain locked behind a huge golden gate. Here, warriors of all eras and cultures gather to revel in glorious combat. To enter it one must prove themselves worthy to the Gatekeeper, the mightiest warrior of all.
18 Corpadverticus: an endless, flat plane, carpeted, with an endless labyrinth of little roofless shelters made from cloth-covered partitions. The ceiling is only two meters high; the partitions are about two-thirds that. A sort of light that doesn't sustain plant life emanates from panels in the ceiling. Each shelter contains a bureaucrat; each bureaucrat has a quill, a stack of paper and a drawing of either a kitten clinging to a branch or a beach scene. Periodically, imps with small carts containing stacks of paper pass through the pathways between shelters. The answer to any question can be found here, but you'll have to make a request in triplicate and the snack machine in the waiting room is empty.
19 Primordial Realm: a branch of the Earthen plane, just much more unstable. Lots of raw earthen power, with dense jungles and dinosaurs unlike any on the Material plane!
20 A plane occupying a narrow, long area confined by rounded roofs and filled with rows of seats with a central aisle. At the front is a chamber which allows control of the plane's movement.
21 A plane of spear-like mountains rising from a thick, almost impenetrable mist. Strange sounds emanate from below the clouds. Each of the tall barren peaks is occupied by a gatehouse connected by great stone bridges, creating a network between the peaks, far far above the cloud layer.
22 Janet- A whole planet sewn together entirely out of denim, buttons, zippers, and metal rivets. Created thousands of years ago by ancient mystic tailors, the plane has since gained a few other materials over time, though denim is the base of it all. Living Cloth Golems take up residence here, and many come from all planes of existence to pay for their services, for the golems are master tailors, craftsmen, leather workers, and zippersmiths.
23 Tempore Mortis- A plane where time has no meaning and acts in unpredictable ways. Vast expanses of bleach white sand cover the plane with occasional spouts of sand falling into the pitch black abyss of a sky. Despite this, it is constantly bright out, though the air is stale with a slight grey hue of dust that never settles. Black bones of creatures fossilized in place dot the landscape and travellers must be wary of running into patches of time that move rapidly forward, or backward, or not at all.
24 Conifer- An endless forest that has no top and no bottom. The many animals and various native populations live among the branches of the massive trees. Plants, trees, poisons, and herbs of all kind, mundane or mystic can be found here. But travelers should stick to the well established branch pathways, lest they be swallowed by the forest and never return. The plates of giant pinecones are a popular building and craft material.
25 The Quasielemental Plane of Oil: An infinite bog filled with oil, fires, and corpses waiting to become one or the other. With the proper planer magic and technical know how oil wells could be built in the material that spew liquid gold out from the Plane of Oil with no actual drilling necessary. The immense pressure of the plane makes living there a hassle for most, but short trips are possible and companies are willing to pay good money for adventures to travel over and make repairs to their wells.
26 The Great Bath: This ocean sized, warm, sweet smelling, and slightly soapy body of water floats in a peaceful sky. There's a few islands in the water and a mile boarder of wooden planks and grass around the perimeter, but 99% percent of the plane is 3 and a half feet deep water. It is not uncommon for bitter enemies to be visiting the Bath simultaneously, but fights never break out in this sacred place of cleansing. It's an odd sight for Angels, Demons, and Devils to be relaxing together, unless you're visiting the Great Bath, and then its par for the course.
27 Warp Space - Partially composed of various dimensions and partially made of the space between the planes, Warp Space contains ways into every single plane that exists. However, the whole plane is fractured and unstable, with no permanent pathways. As a result of this, any travel there is extremely dangerous, and the portals rapidly change size, shape, and location, and randomly fade and reappear.
28 The Eighth Great Sea - A vast ocean, not unlike parts of the Elemental Plane of Water. There's an ocean floor, islands, and plenty of life. However, be warned. Magic flows freely here, and random spell-like effects can manifest with very little warning. Giant sea monsters and ocean titans walk the sea floor. Fish carry lightning and ice magic with them.
29 The Shattered World - Once a world like the Prime Material Plane, some unknown force broke the world into thousands upon thousands of chunks, some mo larger than a pebble, some the size of a mountain. Those who fall can fall for miles before hitting anything solid. On the plus side, ores are very easy to find, albeit very dangerous to actually mine.
30 The Endless Library - What it says on the tin. An endless library filled with winding shelves and a copy of every book ever written, organized neatly. There obviously isn't enough books for an endless library, but after a while the library shelves start to repeat. Helpful modrons organize the books and guide travellers.
31 The Plane of Half-Shadows: like the Ethereal plane, this plane is co-located with the Material Plane. So although someone in this plane of existence cannot physically touch things and beings in the Material Plane, they can (dimly) see into it and observe what happens. This ability to see into it is limited, and functions best where there are dark shadows. The darker the shadows, the better one can observe, while the places corresponding to well-lit areas or places of absolute blackness just show up as opaquely thick fog banks in the Plane of Half-Shadows. Spies and thieves speak with wonder of the incredible power this plane offers for surveillance since it allows peeking out from the shadows while being unobserved, not to mention the ability to pass through walls and other solid objects. What these would-be spectators neglect to mention is the significant danger to the unskilled in meddling with travel to this plane. While there are numerous tomes that teach the meditative states or magical processes for entering the Plane of Half-Shadows, most of these sources do not address the question of how to return. Many a skilled rogue has thought themselves masters after discovering how to enter the Half-Shadow state, but then found themselves marooned in an unforgiving landscape of shadow and fog, where nothing is solid (even the residents of this plane are intangible) and they are incapable of affecting the world, except that their loudest screams make their friends and loved ones back on the Material Plane feel slightly uneasy around regions of deep shadows. Eventually this disturbance ceases when the plane traveler dies of starvation leaving their bones behind in the half-shadows.
32 A single immense castle with what seems to be partially maintained grounds is surrounded by dark woods. In the far distance is an immense spiral of a mountain, it's peak concealed by few. The whole plane is in shades of black and gray and no color is expressed. Inside the castle is an entry room from which sprawl labyrinthine hallways with infinite rooms that vary from lived in but filthy to rooms which seem as if they have not been occupied for centuries. A staircase also rises from the entry room, allowing for one to go up to more hallways or down in a catacombs below. Visitors must be wary. Pale visages of people may occasionally become visible only to fade quickly once noticed. Undead haunt many of the unused rooms, and the forest is a haunt for gargoyles and the aggressive, twisted, jet-black, parodies of normal fauna are equally as threatening. The denzions of the castle are never seen though evidence of habitation is apparent. Time does not pass in a logical way here, instead it is only relevant to perception, and may pass much faster or slower for those outside of each other's perception, and even differently in different rooms. The plane loops around itself so that venturing into the featureless forest eventually leads to the castle or mountain, and the atmosphere is so bleak that characters must succeed on a will save to complete a long rest or fail and have a great depression come over them.
33 The Asylum City: A 4 dimension metropolis, suspended over a chasm within Pandemonium, it is refuge for beings across all different planes. Law and centralized controll is impossible midst the ever changing geography, order only being maintained by crime lords and urban warlords carving themselves a piece of the great city plane
34 The Poisoned Eden: A large collection of swamps and marshland, it is filled with noxious fumes and dangerous animals and spirits, similar to those found in the material plane but far more twisted and primordial. Small pockets of civilization are the slave manors of the residents of this plane, maintaining control through iron fisted brutality. Some wage war on the swamplands while others are content to be kings of their own small pockets of civility
35 The Gentlemen's Room: A small plane, consisting only of an ornate, medium sized study room, with a large bookshelf, able to contain countless books due to enchantment, though none of any truely ancient knowledge, as well as a cabinet of fine liquors, and several leather lounge chairs. Its only occupant besides visitors is a butler by the name of Danes, who will work the make the guest comfortable for their stay. Many suspect the plane was invented by a group of nobles who formed a club to have an excuse to get away from their wives.
36 All Sea: An endless plane of salt water, with neither wind nor fish, it is filled with ships from countless ages past, all the ships once lost at sea. Most die of starvation in the realm, though some have managed to create a self sustaining settle from boat wreckage and whatever was left on board the ships.
37 The Land of Gravity and Growth (LOGAG): This land is made up of asteroids that are connected by huge vines the vines get nutrition from the ultra fertile soil that makes up the asteroids. This leads them to be attracted to if he asteroids. This also leads to the asteroids being covered in massive overgrown forests. The plants grow so fast you can see them move if you pay enough attention. Some asteroids being larger and smaller creates some strange gravitational effects, some asteroids have more or less gravity then others and when they pass by each other some strange things can happen.
38 The Land of Glass and Dreams (LOGAD): this plane is much like our own however the trees, the ground, the sea,1 appears to be made of glass. They have the same feel of there material plane counterparts however they play tricks on the eye. The creatures of this land have learned to use this and the overflowing magic of the realm to there advantage, using illusions, quick movements and various other tricks to catch there prey off guard. Some creatures have even evolved to no longer have eyes so they are no longer deceived by them. The weather seems to have some of the same tricks as the creatures. Light storms, hallucinatory dust coming down from the mountains. You can not trust what you see.
39 The Web Of Lies: The Spider Goddess sits at the center of her web, twitching her lines and pulling the souls in her grasp ever closer to her maw. Her Spiral Skein is a twisted tower of lies and deceit, with eight strands of silk reaching from the roof of the Spider Goddess's Tower Palace to the edge of her realm and a sin in each void. The first is lies, a cavern full of pillars pretending to hold up the sky. The second is made up of cramped chambers representing envy, while the third is maggot-filled grottoes filled with seductive light. The fourth contains eternally dark tunnels of fear; the fifth, a place of betrayal; the sixth, an arena of murder. The seventh space is home to arcades of avarice and appetite, containing all things mortals would kill or die for, while the eighth is a flaming skein of fury, representing the death that comes to all mortals. From u/PhilosophicalPickle
40 The Crucible: The Crucible is a hierarchy of power, trickery, and conflict. The highest point is Snake Mount, a city built into a mountain that triples in steepness with every twenty paces. There are twelve Arenas here, where mortals and fiends are locked in eternal combat for prestige in the eyes of their lords. Two rivers flow from the Snake Mount, wide and strong their flows, but they are made of the blood of the fighters who perish in the arena. One river carries victors in their longboats to the City of Triumph, a settlement much lower than Snake Mount, but quieter. It has a steady foundation in bedrock, and is shaped in the form of two fighters, one with an axe raised over his head, poised for striking, but the other with a quick dagger flashing from his belt toward his enemy's gut. The second river from the Mount is more sluggish, but much broader. It carries the defeated to Mors Adthel, a city which hangs on a cliff over nothingness, where spindly river-rover-men pluck them from the water and pile them up to build a dam to stop the river from taking their city over the waterfall and into the abyss. From u/PhilosophicalPickle
41 The Filth: The Filth is a vast field of mud under a cold, white sky. There is no landmark, but a single tall, wooden post, upon which sits a ragged figure with the skull of a vulture for a head. If one dares listen, it whispers the way to the Queen of Decay's throneroom, deep under the mud, where no light reaches. Innumerable sharp arms pass one down through the suffocating earth, and they take an entrance tax. No mortal finds audience with the Queen of Decay without losing something, perhaps an eye, skewered by a chitinous leg, perhaps the juicy flesh from beneath their fingernails, drilled out by quick mandibles. The Queen herself is unassuming after this ordeal, a diminutive crone, but her world breathes with her, as her hands and legs and intestine, and her garb is made from the remains of past visitors. From u/PhilosophicalPickle
42 The Pits: The Taskmaster's Pits are cold and uninviting, but with occasional great belches of sulfurous heat. The Pits are infinite rolling hillocks of dirt pounded solid by workers' feet, broken there and here by grey-leafed pine trees. All the mortals here wear masks, and all the fiends are in human form, and go without. They are a busy and determined lot, trooping to and fro listening intently to the commands that come from the crevices that open up in a geyser of bronze fog and a booming, nasal voice. With haste, the masked mortals set about sealing the fissure first with tools, then with the bodies of their fellows, until the wound is healed. The humans wear masks of wood, monstrous faces upon them. The elves wear cloth, and they have babies' faces. The others wear metal, and they are smooth and featureless. They traipse back into their towns at the end of each working day, afflicted with contentment, and then devour one of their number. The Taskmaster sits at the center of all of this, in the deepest Pit, in a pool of ink and oil, which fills steadily before igniting at a regular interval. When it does, the Taskmaster orders an audience with every mortal soul in his possession, but what they speak of is unknown. From u/PhilosophicalPickle
43 The Fair: The demon lord Jubilee's realm is a simple affair - a sprawling, lively town engaged in eternal celebration. The occasional drunk has been known to find himself in an unfamiliar town square, between a tall inn, a brothel, a brewery and a fountain that runs with mead. This is Rockton, Jubilee's debauched capital, where hedonism and lust run rampant and the sky blushes gold from jubilation. There are stone baths rimmed with amethysts and more than five hundred rooftop statues. Jubilee himself can be found at every place - he is in the inn, dancing on the tables, while Jubilee is drinking in the square, while Jubilee watches drowsily from a grassy patch by a tree. It is no surprise that mortals end up coming here, but they do grow bored as their lord and his fiends do not. They eventually flee into the groves and dells of the surrounding forest, where fouler creatures than drunks dwell, kept infinitely alive on a diet of ale and sex, and driven mad by lust or gluttony or stagnation. There is no fulfillment to be found with Jubilee. From u/PhilosophicalPickle
44 The Nightmare: Perhaps of all the major Planes of Existence, the Nightmare defies exploration the most. It is the most visited plane by mortals (for we visit there every time we suffer a nightmare) but also the most changing. Phobetor changes her plane to a fresh horror every few moments, with a tremendous flash of lightning. A mortal might find himself falling from the top of the tallest tower one moment, the next, trapped in a corner as a mountain lion approaches. Another flash, and he is face to face with Phobetor herself, who is an unassailable mass of bone and horn, suspended from above by sinew like a macabre marionette. Her eye sockets are hollow but alive with malice, and her jaw swings open to consume her victim a split second before he awakes, sweating, frightened, but alive and in the Material Plane again. From u/PhilosophicalPickle
45 Nerium: Nerium is the Flower that Bites, the Beautiful Snake, a glittering world of alluring smell and hubric brimstone. Curtains of incense cloud the doorways, and vistas of success open up before sudden plunges. A demon lord floats in a caravan pulled by a Halfling who was once an Orc, bound in silk and encircled by a gold band of seven leagues. Banners and standards float from the lord's body, trailing throughout the crimson night. There are three windows; through each of them a moon can be seen, and before them all is a dog, who was once an imp, who sits on a tasseled pillow. The pillars and arches of ornate stone give way below to a vast drop, and then a tangled briar of not-quite-trees and almost-flowers. There are beings down there, though it is not clear who or what they are, or once were. From u/PhilosophicalPickle
46 The Conjunction - A world of infinite gateways. The gateways lead to all the other dimensions. Many of the gateways also lead to other places in the conjunction.
47 The Web - an entire dimension overrun by giant spiders. Everything is coated in web.
48 Hades Simulacrum: A strange, endless land of white mist and moss covered marble columns. The realm appears to be a by-way between the material plane and the many planes for the dead. Those who fall inbetween end up here. Those who end up here appear as they did in their final moments, never rotting, but if wounded healing to appear as they did on arrival. Living statues, carved to resemble angels and demons, wander the realm mindlessly, lashing out at random passersby.
49 Bank of the Immortals: Any immortal being accumulates many assets, none of which they want harmed. Some create their own planes to hold them. Others visit the bank of immortals, and infintly large, infinitly complex vault/bank plane which will safekeep anything from lich's phalacteries, to dragon hoards, to godly artifacts. For a regular fee, be it in gold or in memories
50 Demiplane of Concessions: Often mistaken for a place of refuge and salvation, this sliver of demi-reality is an unending dessert of salted popcorn, ranging in sizes of pebbles to giant boulders. Spiking the landscape are volcanoes that periodically erupt spewing the aforementioned popcorn. Glacially slow rivers of caramel sinuously carve the landscape and travellers might encounter pools of sickly sweet brightly colored shaved ice and sticky gooey cheese. GMs might want to populate the plane with candy-themed monsters.
51 The Reflection: A plane of existence most used for banishing intelligent sentient beings. This realm is composed of countless mirrors in different shapes and forms that reflects the viewers nightmares of their twisted selves. You don't have to eat or breathe in the Reflection and whenever die here somehow, you came back to life through a random mirror. However the body of yours now become the reflection of you in that particular mirror.
52 The Bank: Why do coins have so little weight? Why can gold split into silver? Why is the currency of the world all the same? The answer is The Bank. An entire plane made of the magical currency used by all. Plains of platinum, Geysers of gold, rivers of silver, oceans of copper, and forests of electrum. Everything in this plane is money and as such everything that lives in this plane is powerful. Dragons wage war for the hordes, undead pirates roam the seas, and massive titans of coin wander the land. Ruled by The Banker who is magically connected to all coin he manages the wealth of planes. Beware any who take any coin from the plane without The Banker's blessing as his Auditors will hunt thieves and counterfeiters across time and space. (a plane to explain those who do not use currency encumbrance and split their money as they need it)
53 Gods' Grave: There are few places in which the gods avert their gaze but one such place is the Gods' Grave. Here lies the dead bodies of the gods, even the ones who aren't dead yet. These bodies flow with magic and act like islands upon the void and many a mortal who would hide from a god's anger takes sanctuary here. But be careful where you tread for a god's wrath can be awoken from beyond the grave. Evil footsteps upon a good god may erupt radiant fire, a kind heart sitting on a god of war can bubble a horde, and metal feet on a god of nature can unleash nature's wrath. And above all, do not step upon, listen, or speak to the bodies of the Gods of Death.
54 The Unreclaimed: A land of mystery and wonder, anything that has ever been lost winds up here at some point. Be it a lost sock, a single gold misplaced, a wonderous artifact lost to time, or even a train of though. Anything that has been lost or forgotten winds up here. Anyone as well. The denizens of this plane are all those who have been forgotten, or have vanished under mysterious circumstances from the other planes.
55 The Elemental Plane of Taste: Flavor and texture become more than sensory concepts in this place, here they become real. Composed of many landmarks, such as the desert of saffron, the land of spice and pain, the great mires of bitter guarded by tart frogs. The greatest lord currently in the land is a great sugar elemental, who has taken over by crippling all contenders with horrible addictions, which only he can satisfy.
56 The Antipoles: A plane of constant two sided extremes. A continent of constant volcanic eruptions and spewing lava ravaged by an unending hail storm. An plain of earthquakes whipped by undying tornadoes. The stillest, coldest, saltiest, and darkest of oceans exposed to an cloudless stagnant sky burning with three suns. No matter the place lightning will either burst out bellow or strike from above. Some say this plane was created long ago as a hell and prison for the most powerful of the elemental genies. Find one and they may grant an wish with no tricks if you find a way to release them.
57 The Ballroom of Suffering: A room of white crystal that floats like a bubble in an infinite chasm. All around you is the refection of all pain and suffering. Death, rape, murder happens all around you in a ghastly reflection of reality. In the middle of the room is a pillar which holds a grail. If you consume the liquid inside you will never grow old. However it will send you to different worlds and different times in a never ending quest to stop all pain and suffering.
58 The Game Show: A plane entirely made up of puzzles, fun encounters and treasure. When you enter the plane your hit points are increased to 10x their original amount. You cannot heal there and when you die you are permanently banished from this plane.
59 The City of Sing: Powerful wizards are not the only ones who create planes. The City of Sing was created by a powerful bard who wanted an entertaining, magical, and musical realm. The cities buildings are shaped like various musical instruments, games of chance and entertainment venues of all kinds litter the city, and Music Lane will cause any who travel down it to start singing and dancing about what they are doing and why. Any who travel there will have an invisible servant tending to their needs as long as they are within the city borders. Outside the city are the Genre Wilds that provide the food and resources for the city's visitors. The Jazz rivers, Rock Mountains, Blues Ponds, Reggae Jungles, Country Plains, Heavy Metal Mine, Soul Sea, Hip Hop Valley, Gospel Forest, ect. These wilds are safe within the borders but the deeper one goes the greater the danger. Shielded Magic Carpets go and come from the deep within the wilds once a day as part of the city's Adventure's Safari Challenge! Better survive till the next tour.
60 Cracked Shell: The inhabitant of this massive egg left before memory or record. Now it floats within the void a curious mystery of the multiverse. On the outer surface of the shell are civilizations both old and new carved into the very shell. Ancient yolk that acts as fertile slime fields growing mile high mushroom forests filled with slimes and serpents. The realm is always warm a heat that seems to infuse every part of it and seems to have no source. On the inner surface the yolk is deeper making a ocean of yolk in which swims creatures of all shapes and sizes. A single Kraken makes his home in these seas having slain the Dragon Turtle that once lived there.
61 Heroes' Feast: A massive waffle. The squares are filled with delectable liquids (soups and sweet drinks), the folds valleys of meals (bushes of fruits and trees of meat), and the center a mountain of dairy products. The food here never rots and is always the perfect temperature for the food being consumed. Eating a full meal gives the effects of a heroes feast but as soon as one eats a feast food based monster shall rise to challenge the heroes. Watermelon elemental, Syrupy Serpents, bacon flesh golem, Jam and Jelly slime, Vampire Steak, ect. Seems the place was made to test and reward heroes. Heroes who do especially well get an magic item that can only be used by those proficient with cooking tools.
62 Dwarfhalla: A dwarf's paradise and heavenly afterlife created by the Gods of the Dwarfs. Rivers of fine ale flow from endless mountains filled with all sorts of rare metals and jewels. Endless fortresses are being built and improved upon with clockwork barbers giving the finest beard and hair cuts. Arena's of warriors fighting to prove their metal and no oceans. Visitors are welcome but the realm will eject any living being after one week and after they can not return. Only 1 object can be taken with the a visitor as long as it is given to them by a dwarf whose respect they have earned.
63 Ghost Ship: You are on a ship stuck between the realms. On the outside it looks like a normal ship but it is much larger on the inside and it seems capable of traveling to other realms. The bodies of the crew appear to have all been killed by some strange creature(your choice of Aberration). Avoid the enemy and find the clues to find the captain's secret escape hatch to escape or find a way to defeat the enemy to claim the ship as your own.
64 The Ball and Chains: A moon size black ball whose surface is one massive abandoned city. Attached to the ball are great chains that lead to a dark void far above. None who have entered the void to see what is chained up in the void have ever returned.
65 The Answerable: People only travel to this plane when they search an answer to a question. They are put in the room where the question is answered by someone in the plane who knows the answer. They cannot leave until they have answered someone else's question.
66 Soft dimension. Everything is super soft or has high viscosity.
67 Blind dimension. Organic life simply did not evolve to sense anything in the visible spectrum. Use other senses or exploit other ranges of the EM spectrum to thrive here.
68 Cancer dimension. All organic life is subject to uncontrolled cell division. I guess everything turns into blobs of meat or veg.
69 The Say it First dimension. You cannot do anything before speaking it out loud first in this dimension. You wanna assassinate someone? You must say “I am going to assassinate Bob”
70 The non Euclidean geometry dimension. Hard to speak about, but essentially things like parallel lines could intersect. There are different types: hyperbolic, elliptical, spherical. Some scenarios might arise where you may turn left or right 90 degrees 4 times in a row and not end up where u started.
71 Saline: The plane of salt. The ground is covered with several feet of crusted salt. There are no plants, no standing water. There are mounds of salt and salt 'trees' made of large salt crystals. There are several different kinds of salt. Some of which are edible; many of which are not. A few are even toxic. The only animals are crystalline quadrupeds which consume salt and excrete other types of salt.
72 Rust: Something built this thing and then something broke it and now it rusts. It is world sized but not world shaped with levels upon levels down into its structure. A massive rusted structure whose purpose, builder, and destruction have been lost to history. Defunct clockwork sentries, constructs, and guardians lay dormant till approached then attacking any living thing. Large holes blasted by some ancient weapon give passage to the deep dark innards of the structure. Large metal towers and craters of rusted metal liter its surface. Mysteries and danger lie upon this wreckage.
73 Min To Max: This realm looks like a white room where a simulation of any object or creature the person is deeply familiar with can summon. Can only be in this realm only once in their existence. Only 1 person can be in at a time. If a group enters into this realm they are isolated between realms till each person goes through the realm 1 at a time, any who were already in once get bounced back to the previous realm or the realm they are from. They can only be in it for 1 minute before being bounced back to the realm they were previously in or are from. In this realm the weave is tightly wound and magic infuses into the creature artificially maximizing the character. All stats are now at 20 and the character can make 6 d20 rolls to accomplish a task, solve a puzzle, or use magic. 1 of the d20s can be turned into a natural 20. When knocked out of the realm take 3 levels of exhaustion.
74 Monologue: A small planetoid possessing a single road and a forest with a lake that goes through the center of the world. What really sets this world apart is that visitors hear strange voices arguing over what the visitors should or should not do and the clinking of dice. (All out of character conversations and dice rolls can be heard by the characters)
75 Brain Punch: This realm looks like an circular arena covered by a glass dome sitting on a tall hill. While in this realm all character have their intelligence and strength stats swapped and dexterity to set to 10. When the bell rings its a free for all fist fight and last one standing gets an attunement free belt of Hill Giant Strength. The belt will only work for the winner and if anybody tries to throw the match everybody loses. (the fight is nonlethal unarmed attacks)
76 Repto World: This dino world is a primitive world like one might see in Chult but in which lizards are all. Lizard versions of all normal beasts exist in this realm which is populated primarily by Lizardfolk. A dangerous and savage land but for the adventuring druid or ranger a place to discover new beasts to tame or learn. It is also home to many rare herbs and plants.
77 The Temple: This massive world sized temple floats within a realm of eternal twilight with temples made of gold, obsidian, and wood. This temple contains countless rooms each dedicated to a different god. No temple is closer to the gods. The devout come to this temple and pray and if their prayer is true the god will respond. A trail will be given to the devout and a feat gifted to successful. But if you travel into a room of a god you do not worship expect a deadly challenge to earn the god's respect or perish.
78 Uncanny Valley: This valley sits within a giant floating ring with a single road going through the valley and a series of identical houses on each side of the road. Each house has a pleasant and polite family of a mother, father, daughter, son, and dog. Most of the families are humans but families of the other major races are present. If you knock on one of the doors they will let you in and offer you a meal and bed for the night and then let you leave the house but no magic seems to work to let you escape the realm. The people are all disguised mindflayers (the dogs are Intellect Devourers) practicing how to act to fit in with the races in plans for a future invasion. Floating within the center of the ring is the Elder Brain that controls the mindflayers. Clues will be hidden throughout the realm on how to escape, send a message to the gith, or destroy the Elder brain but if you attack or reveal you have found out what the people are they will drop their disguises and attack.
79 Deadmind: An abandoned strong hold in the shape of a massive brain, its twists and turns acting as a labyrinth of psychic traps for those who travel it. It now houses two tribes one of Githyanki and one of Githzerai. They hold an uneasy peace as they work together to hunt down an unique and dangerous Elder Brain that has appeared in this realm. An Elder Brain Lich that commands the undead as well as it's mindflayers.

(LONG) The ultimate Mac Pro buyer's/upgrade guide for 2018

Mac Pro Buyer’s Guide: May 2018
Glad this channel is doing well, but I thought I’d add a few things as another late teens Apple enthusiast who just went through this exact process early 2017.
References/Resources:
You can download the official Apple Technician’s guide to the Mac Pro 5,1 from 2010 here:
http://tim.id.au/laptops/apple/macpro/macpro_mid2010.pdf
Get specs on any Apple product from either everymac.com or if you have an iOS device or Mac, download the app called Mactracker from the App Store. It’s the same thing, but very easy to use, that’s where I got the OS info of each model from.
Guide:
First, I’m gonna give a brief overview of the different versions of Mac Pro out there, then go part by part to describe how to look for upgrades based off my build and my experiences.
My build:
2010 Mac Pro 5,1 (authentic, not a flashed 2009)
Dual 3.33 GHz 6-core Xeon X5680s (12-core)
32GB RAM (4x 8GB ECC 1333MHz sticks)
GTX 970 4GB Reference (unflashed)
1 Dual HD-DVD/Bluray/DVD/etc. Combo drive

History:
The classic tower design was first used in 2003 as the body of the most powerful PowerPC Mac, the PowerMac G5. Interestingly, their biggest buyer was Microsoft, who used them as Xbox 360 dev kits. The main differentiators between any PowerMac G5 and Intel Mac Pro is that the G5 only has 1 disc drive on the front, and all the IO on the back is in 1 long column, whereas the Mac Pro has it in 2 columns. And, of course, the inside looks different.
Mac Pro 1,1 - 2006, runs 10.4.7 Tiger to 10.7.5 Lion
Mac Pro 2,1 - 2007 same as 1,1, except with an option for 8-core processors. Very similar to the iPod touch 3rd gen, where the 8GB was actually a 2nd gen and had the iPhone 3G specs, but the 16GB and 32GB were the real third gen and had 3GS specs, but they were sold at the same time alongside each other despite having different model numbers and internals. The Mac Pro 2,1 is just the 1,1 with dual and newer generation CPUs. Runs 10.4.9 Tiger to 10.7.5 Lion
Mac Pro 3,1 - early 2008, (out of date, and can’t easily and reliably be upgraded to Sierra or High Sierra. Not bad, but quickly becoming more and more out of date. Runs 10.5.1 Leopard to 10.11.6 El Capitan
Mac Pro 4,1 - early 2009, the final design of the classic tower, it had redone innards and looks identical to 2010 and 2012 models in almost every aspect, the sole difference being that this is the ONLY model of Mac Pro to use delidded CPUs. This is a process you can do yourself, and finding delidded CPUs compatible on sale is less common than the same CPUs lidded. There are ways around this, I think, but I don’t have one so I can’t speak for any techniques that raise the heatsinks enough to let you use a lid. Can reliably be flashed to identify itself as a 5,1, and therefore install High Sierra natively. (as a 4,1, if left unflashed), runs 10.5.6 Leopard to (later 2009 models shipped with, and therefore can only go as far back as 10.6 Snow Leopard), to 10.11.6 El Capitan
Mac Pro 5,1 - mid-2010 and mid-2012. Both models are identical, they only changed the year because of a spec bump, but the pieces themselves are identical. 2010s are generally cheaper because people will sell the 2012 to people for more, because it sounds newer. It’s not. Maybe the case will have less wear, but only because it’s 1-2 years newer. Runs 10.6.4 Snow Leopard or 10.7.x Lion (some late-stage 2010s, and all 2012s), up to 10.13.x High Sierra (and may lose support with 10.14)
DISCLAIMER: Genius Bar still supports 2012, but 2010 is considered “vintage,” which is fucking ridiculous since they’re identical, but if you’re buying one of these to upgrade and you’re the kind of person to need the Genius Bar for anything other than the most advanced and outlier circumstances where you can’t go to anyone but Apple, it’s fine to buy a 2010. Again, unless you need an official part replaced or something, but this “Supported” status of the 2012 is all subject to change as WWDC ‘18 is weeks away.
I don’t recommend buying anything below a 4,1 and prefer the 5,1 just because it’s more officially supported. (For now. It’s likely the next version of macOS won’t support 5,1, and there’ll have to be some other way to install 10.14, and Genius bar repairs will be a no-go for all aluminum towers)
PARTS GUIDE:
>I’m not an expert on pricing, so if I don’t warn about what to look for in terms of price, that means I probably don’t know and you’ll have to evaluate the best price yourself.
CPU: If you think you will ever want to have 2 CPUs, buy a Mac Pro with dual CPUs built-in over anything else because buying just the dual CPU tray on its own generally costs more than buying an entire other used Mac Pro, and the potential of 12-core is a wonderful allure.
If you have a single CPU MP, you can use Xeon W or a single Xeon X (whatever the model number begins with). If you have a dual CPU MP, you can only use Xeon X CPUs (each tier is roughly equivalent in terms of power, Intel just uses it to separate the CPUs designed for single or dual usage, since Xeons are normally for specialized, advanced users to buy for servers or certain workstations.)
The absolute best CPU you can put in a Mac Pro 5,1 (I don’t know what the W equivalent is called) is the Xeon X5690. However, it’s only several percent (in the single digits, I think), faster than an X5680, one model down, and for dual configurations X5680s are literally half the price on eBay, so unless money is no object I would look for X5680s over X5690s. Finding a “matched pair” (I think it means just tested to make sure they work efficiently together and are fully compatible) isn’t absolutely necessary, but it may mean incrementally better performance in certain circumstances. I don’t know, I’m not an expert on that.
GPU: General rule is that if you’re video editing, Final Cut Pro works best with AMD cards, and Premiere Pro works best with nVidia cards. If you’re gaming or using Windows, it’s up to you. It works (almost) exactly like a PC card, and there’s plenty of room for a big card so size is no issue.
HOWEVER**,** and this may actually discourage some people from buying a Mac Pro entirely:
The Mac Pro has no graphics drivers installed natively. Its EFI does not contain any graphics drivers so therefore, there are 3 options that you have. (Also, I'm sure I'm fucking up why it doesn't work like a PC might, but I do know I'm right about how to solve to problem in these three solutions
Buy a card model that Apple shipped in a Mac Pro. This is either a model that Apple sold with the Mac Pro originally that you must either buy flashed (using a PC you can connect it to and boot into, or if it came in a Mac Pro brand-new, it was already flashed in the factory), with an EFI that supports the Apple boot screen (that you hold alt to get to, to choose a boot volume), and the Apple recovery partition (that you hold Command-R on boot to get to or select from the boot screen)
The best card Apple ever shipped with the old Mac Pro was the AMD HD 7950 with 3GB of VRAM. I believe that any card Apple shipped has a free EFI available somewhere online to flash for yourself, so it doesn’t necessarily have to be a card that actually physically shipped in a Mac Pro. Best cards that you can flash to be natively compatible with Mac are the AMD R9 280x (which is virtually identical to the HD 7950, virtually same performance AFAIK), or GTX 680. You can also buy an Apple-branded (but those are more expensive) (or pre-flashed or unflashed, then you flash it yourself) nVidia GT120 just to switch the display to or to have plugged in to a secondary display to for the boot screen. These don’t require any other connections than its own PCIe port, so you can have it in simultaneously above a full-power GPU.
Get your card flashed, if the EFI is not available: If you don’t want to risk it (but if you don’t feel comfortable doing it, you probably shouldn’t buy a MP), or if you have a card where the EFI to flash it is not available online, you can see if it’s one of the models available to be flashed by macvidcards.com. This guy has been at it for years, and basically just as a hobby sells flashed cards and flashing services, to get newer and better cards natively working with every aspect of the Mac Pro. He does not offer either sale or just free downloads of his EFI to flash it yourself (because of course, someone could just reupload it to MEGA or use a torrent or something and he’d lose a great deal of income, makes sense I guess), so the only way is to either buy it from his preflashed or send in your own card for an exceptionally expensive fee to flash it yourself (because once again, even if you’re capable of doing the extremely easy process of flashing yourself, macvidcards doesn’t sell just the EFI files, and he’s pretty protective and secretive about how the EFIs are put together so unless you want to take the time to make one yourself for your card, you just can’t get the EFI on its own, and it’s fucking annoying. It prevents me from being able to upgrade my macOS without putting in an old card to boot into the installerecovery; it’s a big inconvenience.
Leave your card unflashed: This is what I have done (because holy shit it’s $174 to get my 970 flashed: $160 for the service and $14 for shipping, even though I’m close to this guy, but too far away and don’t have enough time nor a car to drop off my card there for a flashing service, that costs only $20 cheaper than I bought the entire card for on eBay). With this, you must keep the old flashed card around, and every time there’s a macOS update that changes the version number (including forced hotfixes like the one a couple months ago after 10.13 was released, and most if not all security updates), you must put the old card back in, boot, and install the upgrade from there, then
nVidia: Install the new nVidia drivers with the old flashed card inside, (and sometimes they take a couple days after an upgrade is released to update the driver, because the driver is matched with the macOS version number (and sometimes difference versions have multiple version numbers, so you have to click on the (10.x.x) number in “About This Mac” to find which one you have. Otherwise, since GPU drivers for Mac load at the end of the boot process, it won’t boot into the new OS, and will just kick back to Windows (because your card contains a windows-compatible driver), or remain at a black screen if you don’t have drivers installed for your card. This driver is separate from the EFI flash you need to have, but I’m not sure if the card will run a lower-quality (no vsync, no transparency, no GPU acceleration) version of macOS that should allow you to install a GPU driver. I know that’s how it works for hackintosh. There is no easy way to install a third-party EFI like rEFInd (formerly rEFIt), or Clover. Not entirely sure why, probably because it uses the Apple EFI first, and there’s some other issue with GPU drivers.
If you want to use a 1080ti, Titan XP, (and maybe Vega 64), it draws more power than the PCIe slot and two power ports can supply, but nowhere near the capacity of the 980w built-in PSU. You can tap either a SATA port or the PSU itself for extra power, but you have to physically modify the hardware for the PSU hack and you lose a SATA port if you tap it for power, so I don’t want to do that because I use every SATA port.
For more info on the power issue: http://www.macvidcards.com/blog/the-pesky-power-issue-with-pascal-1080ti-and-titan
AMD: Congratulations, you don’t have to install new drivers every time you upgrade your macOS installation because hey, Apple already sells (modified versions of) these GPUs in existing Macs, all the way from the RX 480/580 or earlier R8/R9 models, to the Vega 56 and 64 (which are supported since the iMac Pro has them, but the 64 may cause a power issue similar to the 1080ti/Titan XP issue). However, they still won’t show you the boot screen or take you to recovery without being flashed first. So same issues as the nvidia cards in that respect. The only difference is you don’t need to install third-party drivers.
IMPORTANT FOR WINDOWS/BOOT CAMP/LINUX/OTHER DUAL BOOTERS:
As of High Sierra, and specifically if your drive is in APFS format, Apple hasn’t released Boot Camp drivers for APFS on Windows, and also doesn’t mount HFS drives properly from a certain 2016 build of Windows 10 and onward. If your drive is HFS+, and you want to install Windows Vista, 7, or 8, you’re all good to install and with an unflashed card just switch the default boot drive each time before rebooting. However, since Windows 10 doesn’t recognize APFS, once you set Windows as the default boot drive you can’t boot back to macOS on APFS if you can’t access the boot screen. You could either revert your drive to HFS (which requires erasing it, I believe), or do what I did. It requires turning of System Integrity Protection (SIP; it locks anyone, software or user, from modifying boot files or system applications). To turn it off, boot to Recovery, open Terminal, and type “csrutil disable”
You can check if it’s on or off by entering “csrutil status” in either Recovery or your normal macOS boot, and back in Recovery only, reenable it with “csrutil enable”
Sidenote- with this turned off you can change system application icons like you can folders and third-party apps, and it only marginally decreases your security. You still need to download and install a virus for it to be a problem, it just prevents the virus from modifying any macOS or Apple software.
IMPORTANT FOR FILEVAULT USERS: If you use FileVault, the built-in full-drive encryption service, you CANNOT log in with an unflashed card. FileVault makes you sign in with your master password before booting the computer entirely, and yes, before loading graphics drivers to the computer itself, so it relies on the GPU EFI to do this. If you encrypt your drive with FileVault and have an unflashed card, your mac will just sit on a black screen indefinitely, and you have to swap it out for a flashed card, let it decrypt entirely because otherwise it will still request a password before boot, and then swap out the card to the unflashed one.
Optical Drives: Sure, you can swap them out for more SATA space (though it’s different from a hard drive SATA connector, you may need an adapter), I think there’s plenty of drive space in the Mac Pro and since mine came with 1 Superdrive I had room for one more so for $15 on eBay I found a combo HD DVD/Bluray/DVD drive, and though I don’t have HDDVDs, only Blurays and DVDs, it was still cheaper than buying a Bluray-only drive and lets me use HDDVDs if I ever want to. If you buy a third party drive, make sure you remove the front plastic piece that has all the logos on it before, otherwise it won’t fit through the slot when you try to eject it.
Fun fact, if you have only 1 optical drive, the case contains 4 screws in placeholder holes in the optical drive caddy. Kinda cool that they left them there so you wouldn’t have to search for fitting screws, and they have the fancy Apple design so it matches the case.
RAM: 1333MHz RAM is marginally best, but I haven’t noticed a huge difference between when I had the 8-core CPUs and the RAM ran at 1066MHz, and now when I have the 12-core X5680s and the same sticks run at 1333MHz. I think the bigger boost came from the CPU upgrade, but don’t let that stop you from buying the fastest RAM possible. Also, “registered” or ECC (error-correcting code) RAM comes with the Mac Pro, but is not required, if you have a ton of non-ECC RAM lying around. It just won’t boot if you mix and match ECC and non ECC (“unregistered”). You must have all the same kind of sticks. Mine came with 32GB, and my 2015 MacBook Pro has 16, so I dunno what smaller amounts of RAM will do to a Mac Pro of this age, or High Sierra, but it seems to be fine at 8-12GB or higher. 8 should be fine, but in the next year or two may become a little bit tight to use. Depends on the use case.
Networking: Between gigabit ethernet and built-in N wifi, I get along fine at home and at college, but if you need AC, you can buy a simple upgrade kit here:
http://www.osxwifi.com/adapters/apple-broadcom-bcm94360cd-802-11-a-b-g-n-ac-bluetooth-4-0-with-adapter-for-macpro-2009-and-macpro-2010
However, it’s fairly expensive, and I don’t need continuity/handoff/etc desperately, so I haven’t gotten it. You’re not going to find that special Bluetooth connector cable anywhere else easily, and this guy’s pretty reputable within the community, so just like macvidcards, it’s begrudgingly the best (and only) option to bring another part of your Mac Pro up to date.
*I think this is good for now, but I’ll go through it tomorrow afternoon and make sure I add in a storage guide and anything else I think I missed. Because that's a tech rabbit hole within itself. Thanks for making it to the end :)
