Dunfermline are hoping to agree deal with Hearts for Craig Wighton. The striker is in the final four months of his current deal with Hearts and the Fifers are keen on a pre-contract, but would take him now if terms were favourable. 19:10 1 Feb We've had stories on Hibs, Aberdeen, Rangers, Celtic, St Johnstone, but it's been pretty quiet at the rest of the Premiership clubs. The current global pandemic is probably the main reason for that. Still plenty of time for a few twists and turns of course!

17:50 1 Feb As if this season wasn't going bad enough for Celtic, and you're somewhat bizarrely beaten to a signing by the Premier League champions, who are basically filling their injury-hit defence in the short-term. https://twitter.com/RonnieEsplin/status/1356236345929306114
17:46 1 Feb https://twitter.com/saintmirrenfc/status/1356295044291063810
17:42 1 Feb Aberdeen fans, if you finish tonight with Florian Kamberi and Fraser Hornby as your striking options, would you be happy? With Sam Cosgrove going out, are those two adequate replacements? Tweet us your thoughts @BBCSportScot. Or, you know, vote with your thumbs. . .
17:36 1 Feb Some interesting quotes from Celtic boss Neil Lennon, who seems clear that he's not leaving the club anytime soon. "Why would it be my intention to go?" Lennon said, when asked if he had considered following chief executive Peter Lawwell out of the club at the end of the season. "Peter's decision has got nothing to do with my position at all, or my coaches or any of the players. So I don't understand the context of the question at all. "
17:30 1 Feb Comings and goings at Fir Park? Motherwell have already announced Robbie Crawford and Charles Dunne are hanging about at Fir Park for longer, but will there be more coming in or going out? It could be a late one tonight with signings expected in, but looks like captain Declan Gallagher, who was linked with a move away last month, may well be staying. Keep your eyes on our live page for more updates.
17:25 1 Feb Interestingly, Celtic boss Neil Lennon also said earlier that Olivier Ntcham is in talks about a move away from the club. That one's been in the pipeline for a while. Plenty talent, but not really shown it consistently enough for Celtic. Or should the club have got more out of him?
17:19 1 Feb Celtic await Kenny arrival Celtic manager Neil Lennon says a loan deal for Everton right-back Jonjoe Kenny should "signed and sealed" at some point. The Celtic boss wants the 23-year-old defender to replace Jeremie Frimpong, who last week joined Bayer Leverkusen.
17:15 1 Feb Busy night at Pittodrie... Reports circling that Aberdeen have paid £150,000 to get Ross McCrorie's move made permanent now (was meant to be £350,000 in the summer), with Scott Wright heading to Ibrox immediately rather than in the summer. https://twitter.com/ScottBurns75/status/1356281147421040650

Earlier today, head coach Jack Ross said both Nisbet and Ryan Porteous, also the subject of interest, trained this morning and are in his plans for tomorrow night's game against St Mirren. It could be a tense wait for Hibs fans tonight. . . https://twitter.com/robert_grieve/status/1356248104438288386
16:42 1 Feb Ibrox activity Bournemouth manager Jason Tindall said in a news conference earlier that Jack Simpson to Rangers is "more than likely going to happen" today, bringing forward his move having signed a pre-contract deal to switch to Ibrox in the summer. His Cherries team-mate Nnamdi Ofoborh is also expected to sign a pre-contract, having agreed to move to Wycombe on loan for the rest of this season.
16:34 1 Feb Saints still eyeing Gilmour deal St Johnstone manager Callum Davidson is hopeful of adding at least one new player to his squad - but is also surprised that his phone hasn't been ringing about midfielder Ali McCann. Davidson reckons the 21-year-old Northern Ireland international has been his best performer this season and McCann was in the spotlight again with a fine winner in Saints' 3-2 win away to Kilmarnock. "I think I'm just going to switch my phone off tonight," the manager joked. However, Davidson is still hopeful of completing the signing of former Arsenal midfielder Charlie Gilmour, the 21-year-old who has impressed on trial after being released by Norwich City.

16:18 1 Feb Aberdeen 'admire' target Hornby Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes is "very busy" trying to get in a striker to replace Sam Cosgrove, according to assistant Tony Docherty. The Dons are hoping to sign Scotland Under-21 top goalscorer Fraser Hornby on loan from Stade de Reims. "He is certainly a player we really admire and we think is a good young player and would be a good addition," Docherty said. "You are never there until you are there. We are endeavouring to do all we can as club to get things over the line. " On Rangers' immediate pursuit of their pre-contract signing, Scott Wright, Docherty said: "I can't comment on that, other people are working on that as we speak, purely speculation at the moment. "
16:11 1 Feb Not a signing, but... https://twitter.com/MotherwellFC/status/1356271339548631050
16:08 1 Feb Welcome! I've settled in with a coffee and massive slab of cake from the canteen, all set for a long night of transfer activity (or not?). Will Kevin Nisbet leave Hibs? Can Aberdeen replace Sam Cosgrove? We'll have every in and out of the night, and plenty of errr 'banter' in between. Stick with us.

Le Bilan Infinity War - Mid-Season Special

Happy New Year to everyone and welcome to a special edition of Le Bilan. For a little more than a year now I've been writing these weekly recaps about Ligue 1, a league that may not be the best in the world but still deserved more attention on /soccer.
I would have probably stopped doing them if it was not for the constant support from the small but very passionate french community on here who constantly provides me help, ideas and inspiration. That's why I wanted to have them on board for this one-off. So I gathered the Avengers of the french /soccer redditors to let them talk about their respective clubs and what happened to them so far this season.
I would like to thank everyone who accepted to participate in this collective work, it's been a real pleasure reading all your contributions.
The regular Bilan will be back on thursday after matchday 18. In the meantime, enjoy this one !

Ligue 1

Olympique Lyonnais by sugima

After the final 8, and the 4th harvest of Pep Guardiola's Manchester City by Maxwel Cornet in 2 seasons, we have only Ligue 1 and the Cup to play. No Champions League or Europa League, due to a 7th spot when the League decided to terminate the 2019-20 season. After 6 matches (1W-4D-1L), this season felt like it would be a second shit season in a row in Ligue 1 : 3 draw games against opponents who are in the 2nd half of the table (Bordeaux, Nîmes and Lorient), and one against Marseille who played 70 min with 10 men. Add to this an outrageous amount of crosses all going into the void, and Rudi Garcia was ready to miss a European spot twice in a row. But this awful streak came to an end, and OL won 29 points out of 33 in the following 11 matches. Despite this successful streak, these matches still include some poor performances compared to the expected standard of one of the richest French clubs : the 7th match against Strasbourg who came back from 0-3 down to 2-3 and could have equalized in the last minutes, the 8th match against Monaco (4-1 win, 4-0 lead at half-time with 4 generous gifts from Monaco's defense, but Monaco dominated the whole 2nd half) or the match against Brest at home (15th match day), where OL conceded the equalizer on a last minute penalty when Brest was down to 10 men (again ...). The difficulty to keep a result with an extra player on the pitch seems to go on, and often coincides with Garcia's choice to sub off an attacking player for a defensive one. On the bright side, our midfield now performs better than the past seasons, which helps the whole team.
Best player : ?
I'm not sure. Thiago Mendes seems to have replaced his ghost from the past season, Lucas Paquetà and Tino Kadewere also performed well for their first half season.
Revelation : Tino Kadewere
He was recruited as a good Ligue 2 striker last winter, stayed in Le Havre on loan and ended best scorer of the 19-20 season with 20 goals scored. Many recent Ligue 2 great scorers have failed in Ligue 1 (Charbonnier, Bozok ..), and there are already many strikers in Lyon, so I was afraid of the result. He turns out to be an intelligent player, and more than a pure striker. Let's see if he confirms on the long term.
Final place : Champion
(Despite Rudi Garcia)
With PSG and LOSC still involved in CL and EL respectively, we have to be a title contender until the end. We also improved our midfield and attack during the summer. There's still Maxwel Cornet playing left back, but it doesn't matter as long as the rest of the team plays well.

Lille OSC by PAT_The_Whale

We started the season very well with a 1-1 draw against a CL contender (Rennes), which is something we’ll see a lot during the season: Win against mid/low-table teams, draw against CL contenders. There were only 3 exceptions: draw against Nice, loss against Brest (only loss in the league so far) and draw against Saint-Etienne, and we can count the wins against Monaco and Montpellier as exceptions too, but in my opinion they are rather EL contenders. Our last two games of the half-season are against Angers and Nîmes, which means both are winnable. In that case, we’d beat our previous point record by mid-season, 42 points instead of the previous record of 40 during the 2013-2014 season (we finished 3rd).
In the EL, it’s the contrary: 2 wins against 3rd placed Sparta Praha, 1 win and 1 draw against 1st placed AC Milan, 1 draw and 1 loss against last placed Celtic. Fun fact, we were the only team to not win against Celtic, meaning that we gave them their only 4 points. Because of that, we’ll have to face Ajax instead of Red Star Belgrade.
Best player : Renato Sanches
Even if he is often injured, he singlehandedly destroyed AC Milan’s midfield and is one of our main creative forces. When he isn’t playing, our wingers and strikers have to be more creative. When he is playing, they can focus on being available, which makes a huge difference.
Revelation(s) :
Burak Yilmaz : Came out of Turkey, 35 years old. Nobody expected him to be this good.
Yusuf Yazici : He was absolutely shit last season, then ruptured his ACL. He said he worked hard to get back into form, and man did it work well. He’s become very good this season, a complete turnover for him.
Sven Botman : We sold our big CB talent Gabriel for 30M. Then we bought some no-name from Ajax who couldn’t even get to their first team. That man has serious world class potential. So fucking good.
Xeka : He was good 2 seasons ago, but nothing spectacular. Then he injured himself in the end of the season. Next season, he’s clearly below his level, we thought that the injury ruined him. Now comes this season where he often replaces Sanches because of his injuries, and he’s been better than 2 seasons ago. Not our most important player at all by far, but he’s also had a big turnover, and has shown to be very important.
Final place : 1st-3rd
Lyon don’t have to play Europe, so they get a form advantage, but we can safely say that Lille and PSG probably won’t be winning their respective competitions, so that advantage might not last. PSG might also stop getting unlucky with injuries. Jonathan David might figure out how to score again. It’s extremely hard to predict the league winner this season.

Paris Saint-Germain by Rerel

On the 24th of August 2020, Paris got defeated in its first final of Champions League against the German champion Bayern Munich. The LFP, who is the reigning body of Ligue 1, got the genius idea to start the season on the 22nd of August, before the CL final even took place.
Such generosity from LFP and the 8 Covid cases the team had, led to a poor beginning of the season for Paris. With 2 defeats against Lens (7th of Ligue 1) and Marseille (5th) right at the start. There were two more defeats against AS Monaco and Olympique Lyonnais later. PSG has never won the Ligue 1 title with more than 3 defeats. This season is definitely more challenging for the Parisian club who has to catch up on both Lyon and Lille to hope to win the title of 2020-2021.
In Champions League, Paris Saint-Germain also had a difficult start with two defeats against Manchester and Leipzig. But with an incredible turn of events, they managed to win both return legs against the group leaders and take the leadership of the group of death that sent Manchester United going to Europa league. Mainly thanks to Neymar with his 6 goals contribution in Champions League for PSG.
The unexpected recruit and success of Paris this season must be Moise Kean. The 20 years old striker managed to already score 7 goals in Ligue 1 and 2 in champions league. While invisible at Everton, the young Italian prodigy managed to win playing time in Paris earning the trust of his manager and beneficiating from Icardi's mysterious long term abductors injury.
While PSG is currently behind Lyon and Lille in the Ligue 1 table and a sudden managerial change has appeared... There are quite a lot of perplexity on the future of the club results this season. Qataris club owners seem to have lost faith in their German coach Thomas Tuchel and now resolved to chase the Argentine Mauricio Pochettino to replace him.
The fan base has been quite divided on this managerial change. A strong side of Parisians felt the team lacked identity in its playing style. While the other side defended the results Tuchel managed to achieve. The truth is that both sides are right. Indeed, Tuchel didn't have a team identity and style. He changed the tactics very often to adapt to injuries, competitions, opponents. The players themselves had doubts on some of his decisions: playing Marquinhos in the midfield, Danilo in defense, then reversing this situation completely, going with a 3-5-2 formation. PSG viewers noticed the constant lack of pressing and stability the midfield has without Verratti.
Can we blame it all on the ridiculous amount of injuries in his squad? (highest in Europe) Surely, PSG fans liked Thomas Tuchel, some of them only liked his first 6 months at the club when he looked like tactical genius. But the German manager has been looking fed up for quite some time and his communication showed it. It's also rumoured that he lost the support of some players after the 2nd leg against İstanbul Başakşehir.

Stade Rennais by ThePr1d3

What can I say about that first half of the season from Stade Rennais ? Probably the same that can be always said for this club. It's been a wild ride. Following that club is extremely interesting, deeply frustrating, even disappointing at times but God damn if it isn't rewarding, and the most exciting experience you can get. And those past few months have been all of that in a nutshell.
After an unexpected change in the administration, the club was entering the season to confirm its new ambitions, or fall back into averageness. The transfer season was encouraging, with the signings of Aguerd and Rugani (loan) to reinforce the CB, of Guirassy as a much needed competition to Mbaye Niang, of Terrier as a versatile deadly wingestriker, and investing in the young Belgian prospect Jérémy Doku. But the unexplainable loss of Raphinha to Leeds put a huge stain on the window, losing the highest performing offensive asset and only quality left footed winger, thus preventing Stéphan for playing with two inverted wingers like the past seasons...
And as far as results are, the club started like a cannonball (just like last season), ranking first after 6 matchdays and undefeated for another week. But, again just like last year, the start of the European Campaign really took its toll on the team, recording a sensationnal November month (6 defeats and a draw) and plumetting to the mid domestic table. Worse thing is, Rennes only managed to score 1 point in the UCL while performing more than decently, and being far from the embarassement they were supposed to be. But a severe lack of efficiency (3 goals, 2 being pens for more than 50 shots) on both areas, crippling injuries of key players (Camavinga, Maouassa, Terrier) and bad luck (Nzonzi suspended for kicking a bottle of water, Dalbert conceding 2 pens and getting a red in the first 40min vs Chelsea etc) meant the end of the club's Europeans aspirations, even missing on a well deserved EL knockout stage.
Fortunately, the month of December was a turning point with 4 victories in that many matchs (then again, last season the team went also undefeated in December after being kicked out of EL), and ends the year in a solid and promising 4th place.
Best player : Steven Nzonzi
Rennes's principle asset this season is definitely its midfield. The trio of Nzonzi, Camavinga, Bourigeaud is one of the strongest in the league, and is the main reason the team has shifted from a quick projecting offensive playstyle to a controlling, great at combining one. And out of those, Steven Nzonzi is probably the best element for the team. His calm and collected attitude bring serenity to the play, and you'll always see him go back in front of the CBs to allow nice and proper start of the play. His vision and quality of pass is something we've never had in Rennes, and his defensive positionning allows Camavinga to shine as a box to box midfielder.
Revelation : Adrien Truffert
After the long injury of our star left back Faitout Maouassa and the disappointing performances of emergency loaned Dalbert to fill his role, young academy player Truffert took it upon himself to secure the left flank, providing an assist for the equalizer and scoring the winning goal in his first appearance vs Monaco. After that, he managed solid regular performances, showing good defending for his age, and a rare crossing quality in front.
Final place : 3rd-5th
If we get spared by the injuries (which should be, given we won't have to play 3 times a week anymore), and manage to fix our efficiency problems up front (the infamous 15 shots on the post in 17 matchs), we should be a force to be reckoned with for the remainder of the year. I only rate Lille, Lyon, Paris and maybe Montpellier as being a better side than Rennes, though Marseille always somehow manage to get good results despite their level of play. I expect us to keep growing as we've done so far.

Olympique de Marseille by LondonNoodles

What could have been? If there was a movie made on OM's 2020-21 first half, that would be its title. Some of us would say we're almost relieved that Marseille is not in the top 3 at the end of the calendar year, as it would paint a false and unfair representation of the poor quality of this group, and the sadness we've felt watching an empty Velodrome filled with so little ambition. Yet, despite the horrible Champions League campaign that will be forgotten as "an accident", Marseille have not only won enough games to be in the podium race (with 2 postponed games to play), they've showed glimpses of collective talent, like in the first half of the game against Monaco, or the first half against Rennes, or even again the first half against Nantes! See a pattern here? Yes that's right, before trying to confront our ligue 1 rivals, our biggest challenge yet again will be to face our worst enemy : ourselves! As is tradition alongside Christmas presents and Provence's 13 desserts, we will be thrilled by the many names of star european forwards that will pour in the press until eventually we settle for the one name that no one really wanted. But the question for 2021 really is : if this team can step up and find the missing gears, what could be?
Best player : Steve Mandanda
Crazy to think of how many points he must have saved us in his career and in this half season alone. What a legend of the club.
Revelation : Pape Gueye
Didn't get much playtime yet but showed undeniable qualities, the game against Rennes before his red card he was absolutely phenomenal on the pitch. Thank you Turpin!
Final place : 4th
PSG will reclaim their crown, Lille look solid second, Lyon will fight it out and probably get above us.

Montpellier HSC by JeanneHusse

It's been a great start of the season for Montpellier, despite our current 8th place. We fixed our main problem from last season, which was us getting plowed by everyone when playing away from home, and if it wasn't for a few surprising loss (Dijon, Lille), we would be sitting around the 4-5th place right now. Der Zakarian even found some tactical flexibility, by departing from his beloved 3-5-2 and trying out a very offensive 4-3-3, led by a Mavdidi-Delort-Labord front 3. More surprisingly, he doesn't hesitate to field a midfield that would make Guardiola proud, by using one sentinel (usually Ferri) and two offensive midfielder, Savanier and Mollet. We can now be more adaptive depending on the type of opponent we're facing.
While Savanier is by far our most gifted player, and the beloved son of La Paillade, he's been suffering a few injuries recently, enough for Andy Delort to steal the spotlight and be our starplayer. The man has been scoring screamers left and right, pressing like a madman and feeding assists to Laborde, forming one of the best attacking duo in the league this season.
Most of the team is pretty much the same as last year, but we really improved on our wingbacks. Replacing Oyongo on the left, Ristic is probably this season's revelation. He's no Bédimo or Roussillon yet, but he's shown great promise, whether it's on a back-5 or a back-4. On the other side, Souquet, while being useful, was never that great a wingback. Thankfully, Junior Sambia finally stepped up to the plate after years of disappointing performances as a midfielder. Now, he's killing it on the wing and we can finally end the mouring of Ruben Aguilar's departure to Monaco.
If we keep at it, and don't repeat the same mistake against smaller teams, we're in contention to grab a Europa League spot. We've shown against Lille that we can battle it out with the best teams in the league, and apart from the current top4, I don't see a team that is so clearly above us. It'll be tough, but this might finally be the year we get this freaking 5th place !
Best player : Andy Delort
Revelation : Mihailo Ristić
Final place : 5th

Angers SCO by EastOfEden_

The fans went into this season a bit worried given the turmoil at the helm of the club (our director of football and talisman Olivier Pickeu being fired after 14 years of service, our president being sued for sexual assault...) and the loss of key players during the transfer window (Santamaria and Ait Nouri most of all), with very little of the big money made on transfers over the last few years being reinvested (Pepe, Toko Ekambi, Reine Adelaide, Tait). But as usual we've been very pleasantly surprised by the performance of the team, although nothing should surprise us from Stephane Moulin, who manages to have this team play pragmatic (some may say defensive) football and get results when it counts.
The core of the team, with the exception of the departing Santamaria and Ait Nouri, has been mostly unchanged, and the new recruits Bernardoni in goal (who is without a doubt our club's revelation this season) and Coulibaly in midfield have gelled nicely with the team. The biggest change has been the repositioning of Fulgini as a 10, which has allowed him to shine and contribute quite a few goals and assists as our best player of the first half of the season.
Best player : Angelo Fulgini
Revelation : Paul Bernardoni
Final place : 9th-11th

OGC Nice by erjiin

A mid-season crash after a promising start. After a nice (lol!) mercato, saluted by the press and almost all supporters, the season looked interesting. A lot of departures, almost all key posts reinforced, some youngsters in defense to play with Dante, the arrival of Morgan Schneiderlin, Rony Lopes, Hassane Kamara, the young forward Amine Gouiri and after a while of Jeff Reine-Adélaïde. The team seemed ready for Ligue 1 and Europa League... It began slowly with Patrick Vieira still struggling to find his way (and to convince the supporters he was the right man). However after a logical defeat again PSG at matchday 4, the machine seemed to take off and at matchday 9 the club was classed 4th, with a convincing draw against Lille (1st at this time) and a 0-3 win at Angers. Unfortunately at Angers happened also THE drama: Dante, captain and technical leader of the team has been badly injured (ACL) until the end of the season. It turns out the team and particularly the young CBs weren't ready at all for this. After 5 defeats including one at home against the last of Ligue 1, one against Monaco in the derby of Côte d'Azur and an elimination in Europa League, due to his incapacity to solve the problems, Patrick Vieira has been fired and replaced by his assistant Adrian Ursea. Adrian Ursea himself has barely managed to do better than Vieira but must compose with injured players (Dante, Atal, a lot of others), out of form players (Lopes, Dolberg), a prone to mistakes team (at least one goal leading mistake per game in recent games) and even a COVID outbreak at the facilities. Now the team is 12th, depressed and has a huuuge need: an experimented CB (and maybe also cocaine but it seems it's not allowed during games) However not everything is dark and some players have delivered: JRA has been very interesting lately, Amine Gouiri is a joy to watch, Lotomba is a good RB and Hassane Kamara a good LB.
Best player : Jeff Reine-Adélaïde
Revelation : Amine Gouiri
Final place : 6th
The club is looking for defensive reinforcement, as i'm optimistic I believe that with them and the comeback of injured players, we will do much much better.

Girondins de Bordeaux by NotMeladroit

After an eventful summer highlighted by a controversial logo change, a close call in the yearly DNCG hearing and the appointment of Jean-Louis Gasset only 11 days before the start of the season, Bordeaux started the season pretty well with 9 points in the first 6 games and only 2 goals conceded with 5 clean sheets. The Girondins didn’t concede a single goal in their first five games at home starting the season with an impressive 3 goalless ties streak! The end of 2020 was less impressive with 18 goals conceded in 11 games and 3 defeats at home in the last 4 games. The month of November was a clear example of Bordeaux’s incontinency this season from a 4-0 defeat at Monaco with 3 goals conceded in 4 minutes to 4 points earned in 2 games away at Rennes and PSG.
Best player : Hatem Ben Arfa
Despite being signed only in October and after only 158 minutes played in the 2019/2020 season at Real Valladolid, Hatem Ben Arfa is already a key part of Bordeaux offence being involved in 1/3 of the goals scored this season with 2 goals (2 game winning goals) and 4 assists, all of them in the last 7 games of 2020.
Revelation : Paul Baysse
Paul Baysse shining with his hometown club at 32 is unexpected but very welcomed. After not playing a single professional game with Bordeaux at the start of his career, Paul Baysse returned to the club in the winter of 2018. But the rise of upcoming star Jules Koundé made him ride the bench and being loaned out to Caen for the 2018/2019 season. He returned from his loan last season but was put in the fridge by Paulo Sousa and didn’t play a single minute. But injuries to habitual starters Pablo and Laurent Koscielny and trust put in him by coach Jean-Louis Gasset made him the center-back with the most minutes played so far and a key part to Bordeaux main strength, its defence ranked 7th in the league.
Final place : 9th-14th
Unless Bordeaux goes into a hot streak to end the season like they used to do to qualify for Europe this past decade, they will finish midtable between 9th and 14th too far from European spots battle but comfy enough from any relegation scares. The defence is the main strength of the team but the team is not well drill enough to be consistent over a full season and the offence is underwhelming, already being too Ben-Arfa dependant, despite having interesting offensive players.

FC Nantes by qqsharp

In view of the general situation of the club :
  • A mafia president involved in large-scale tax fraud cases
  • An unofficial "sports director" even more crooked, who led the club to a raid on the training centre for dubious transfers.
  • The appointment of Domenech, a mediocre coach, unfamiliar with modern football and deeply irritating, who pushes the limits of the absurd and ends up turning the fans against the management.
  • The probable closed-door sessions for the rest of the season that will undermine the atmosphere of a normally boiling stadium
  • An already limited workforce with executives in decline (Pallois, Touré) and probably ready to be plundered in January
  • A series of catastrophic matches in progress reminiscent of Strasbourg 2007-2008
I don't see how Nantes could end up in any other place than the last one. If it could at least give us the opportunity to get rid of those bastards at the head of the club who are always trying to smear our reputation...
Best player : Ludovic Blas
We don't score much, but he is always dangerous and has managed to take over from Simon and Bamba, who are like the team at the beginning of the season, weak. Fast, sharp in front, unfortunately a little bit inconsistent but a really interesting player.
Revelation : Randal Kolo Muani
By dint of looking for mediocre 9s everywhere (Coulibaly, Emond...), we end up realising that when you are Nantes the solution often comes from within. Twice man of the match (without scoring a goal but not being spoiled by the VAR...), he has a sense of purpose and it is only sadly logical that we talk about a departure in January for him.
Final place : 20th

RC Strasbourg by Colyris

This season started with a good number of players affected by the COVID just before the start of the season, which must have complicated the end of the preparation, and the start of the league. It should also be noted the absence of fans at home, Normally La Meinau is almost always full. There we have only one victory at home out of 8 matches. It's not brilliant. But the absence of the fans does not explain everything.
To put it simply, it's going to be a complicated season.
The main problem of Racing, for me, is quite simple: we concede too many goals for God's sake!
Defence hasn't been our strong point since our return to L1 but we've taken 32 goals in 17 games. That's almost 2 goals per game, it's complicated to get good results like that. Hopefully Sels will come back soon and correct this problem a little bit. Clean sheets guys please.
The positive point of this beginning of the season is probably the Ajorque/Diallo duo who are doing rather well, 6 and 5 goals respectively. I was rather skeptical about the arrival of Diallo at the very end of the mercato (10M€ from Metz) but considering the results it works.
Best player : Mohamed Simakan
I mention a defender whereas just before I said that defence is the problem, but Simakan is overall solid (even if 2 handballs -> 2 penalties against Metz =/). And above all there are starting to be rumours of contact with Milan. I have no illusions with the current situation (thanks COVID + Mediapro) we'll probably sell but I hope at least at the end of the season and at a good price (more than 15 M please). Seriously PSG are buying Diallo, Kehrer 30M+, ASSE is selling these 2 defenders 30M+ and so on and I feel that we will accept an offer at 15M-). Otherwise probably Ajorque, with 6 goals / 5 assists.
Revelation : Habib Diallo
It's not really a revelation for league 1, but Habib Diallo is interesting over this half season (5 goals / 3 assists). I would like to see the Ajorque/Diallo duo start more matches together.
Final place : 16-17th
I think it will depend on the resumption. The January matches are against Nîmes, Lens, St-Étienne, Dijon and Reims. They are almost all direct opponents for the survival.
If we win 4 out of 5 matches (it's Christmas, let me dream.) we could maybe finish 12-13th, but it's likely to be a battle to the end for survival, hoping to finish above them, like 16-17th.

Ligue 2

Toulouse FC by THZHDY

After a less than ideal 2020 (the club went winless in 23 consecutive games from october 31st 2019 to september 26 2020, (331 days) and a much deserved relegation, the club has found new hope. New ownership in the name of RedBird capital and Damien Comolli's leadership, a new manager (Patrice Garande) many new transfers and a focus on youth academy players allow us to sit in 3rd at the winter break, only 2 points behind first place. Since that 3-1 against Auxerre that marked the end of the winless streak, Toulouse have won 9, drawn 3 and lost only 1 game (a 4-5 thriller against Valenciennes, with their right back scoring 4 goals)
What happened? Solid recruitment, and players who look like they finally give a shit. Most of the new signings making an extremely positive impact. Stijn Spierings, a Dutch CM signed from Bulgaria, scored 6 and assisted 1 in 10 games (5 penalties) and has brought much needed composure to the team. Branco van den Boomen is a dead ball master, Brecht Dejaegere is a leader in the midfield, and Rhys Healey is on a major scoring spree, having scored in each of the last six games.
Top scorers: Healey (8), Spierings (6), Antiste (6)
Best player : Rhys Healey
His scoring spree earned him the Ligue 2 player of the month award for December.
Revelation : Amine Adli
His new role as a second striker and his partnership with Healey is amazing, he's scored some beautiful goals, and he's an academy product.
Final place : 3rd and a playoff loss
We have a tough schedule ahead, we play all of the top 8 in the next 7 games, so if we manage to get out of that still within reach of the top 2 I can see us getting promoted again, I'm hoping for 1st place obviously.

AJ Auxerre by PrisonersofFate

Auxerre has been in a bad situation for years. Once a strong team in french football, L1 Champions in 96, french cups and a strong academy, things went sour with the relegation. A chinese businessman bought the club back and invested enough for them to survive.
Auxerre in L2 have been disappointing since they got relegated. It's maybe the first time they have a shout to get promoted again, and that's thanks to the good work of Jean-Marc Furlan.
Furlan is really a L2 coach, who will promote a team often (Troyes twice, Brest). He tries to get good and offensive football and things start to work now.
Best player : Mickaël Le Bihan
Mickaël Le Bihan scored 13 times already and is the biggest threat in the team, he is clearly the best scorer of the league.
Revelation : Hamza Sakhi
Of course, going to the stadium this season is hard, and even watching the games thanks to Mediapro (I canceled my suscribtion) but I always liked to watch Hamza Sakhi, a hard working and creative midfielder.
Final place : 5th
I reckon Auxerre can push to the top 5 and play the playoff to get promoted again. The city would need that.

En Avant Guingamp by sgdbdjos

A season to (already) forget. No more ambitions to climb in Ligue 1 : remaining in Ligue 2 is the objective now. 15th after 17 games, 16 points taken, 16 goals scored (0.94 point and goal / game).
A disaster, given that the EAG is the 3rd budget of L2. 10 games without a win series in progress...
The causes: players are not at their true level, no team spirit, character or soul.
Coach Bazdarevic is struggling to convince, and the two men who made him come (Gravelaine and Desplat) are no longer at the club.
A "novice" and very (too) discreet president who has just taken the position. A too large staff (31 players) which should be reduced to the winter mercato.
We are clearly on a season of transition, it will be necessary to avoid the disaster of a descent in national and rebuild behind.
Best player : Ronny Rodelin
31 years old, 2 goals and 1 assist, he is one of the only engines of the Guingamp attack this season.
Revelation : Matthias Phaeton
20 years old, he has already scored three goals in 9 games, each time coming back into the game.
Final place : 12th

Red Star FC by ziggurqt

I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to talk about Red Star. But before talking about their whereabouts, a bit of trivia, shall we? Contrary to popular belief, the name of the club isn't a translation of “Étoile Rouge”, as it was named Red Star from the very beginning in 1897 by its founding father, namely Jules Rimet. For those who missed the story, Rimet was instrumental in development of football in the early age, as the founder of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and the first World Cup trophy held his name until the actual trophy went lost (a first time in 66 in England) and probably melted for its gold in Brazil later on. I actually planned to say much more, but I don’t want to hijack the thread for my own profit (maybe I should plan a more thorough thread?). Anyway, being born and bred in Seine-Saint-Denis for 30+ years (but living in Montpellier now), this club is all kind of awesome, despite never being in the front stage in our living memory.
So, where’s the club now? Red Star plays in National 1 (third division). The start of the season was rocky to say the least (no win in the first four games), but they came back brilliantly and now are holding a solid third place (2 points behind the first). To tell the truth, and not being ashamed about it, I had a kind of football burnout just before the whole COVID situation and I’m still holding back. But the club has an amazing network to keep tabs on the ongoings of the club. So, truthfully, I haven’t watched a single game in its entirety since 20/21 but I feel I can still provide decent insights.

[English Football] How the greatest flowering of football talent since 1966 gave the tabloids a decade of material

The first four parts of this series covered Nottingham Forest, Notts County, Derby County/Leeds United, and Stoke City.
This episode in English Football Drama is going national. After four episodes diving into the circus that is Midlands football, we turn our attentions to England's national football team. This episode will focus on the 21st century up until about the 2010 World Cup, as the 'Golden Generation' of young English talent failed to achieve for country the glories that so many of them achieve for their club. There will be a bigger focus on off-the-pitch stories and tabloid scandals here, although obviously football is central. In the era before the general sanitisation of the English tabloid press, players on the national team were up there with the royal family for gossip reporting and red-top scandals. And scandals they provided.
Background
English football had something of a renaissance in the 1990s. It ceased to be a violence-ridden sport predominantly enjoy by white working class men and became a national game in the true sense.
After the glory of winning the World Cup for the home crowd at Wembley in 1966 against the Germans, England's footballing fortunes took a nosedive. England did not qualify for the 1974 or 1978 World Cups at a time when English clubs were dominant in Europe (all European Cups from 1977-82 were won by English sides, while Leeds would have likely won in 1975 if not for some incredibly suspect refereeing at a time when bribing the officials wasn't unheard of) and the national team stagnated. Performances picked up in the 1980s, but the most notable moment for the national side in this decade was a certain Diego Maradona cementing an increasingly bitter rivalry with the Hand of God in 1986.
Off the pitch, hooliganism, often called the 'English Disease', blighted the reputation of the game at home and abroad. The socially turbulent 1970s-80s created a violent subculture at the underbelly of the sport, arguably fuelled by media sensationalism, and earnt English football supporters a terrible reputation when they supported club or country in European football competitions. The darkest moment came at the 1985 European Cup final when 39 supporters of Italian side Juventus died in a stadium collapse caused when the crowd sought to flee rioting Liverpool supporters. While there were other factors at play, the horrific scene was too much and all English clubs were banned from European football until 1990. England's participation in the 1988 European Football Championship in West Germany was like a candle which drew in the unsavoury elements of English club support and there was widespread violence between English and German hooligans around the competition.
So, in 1990 a fairly unpleasant situation? What changed?
At home measures such as the general adoption of all-seater stadiums and corresponding ticket price increases killed off much of the old 'terrace culture' around clubs. The government had made it possible to ban convicted hooligans from attending any match and in some cases from leaving the country during a major international tournament. The issue was good optics for Margaret Thatcher and her general commitment in government to the traditional safe Tory issue of law and order.
The 1990 World Cup in Italy was the start of football's image change. England did better than usual, making it to the semi-final before what would become a highly common event. Losing penalties to Germany. Their success and the resonance of Paul Gascoigne crying on the pitch owing to his sheer pashun took football to a wider audience.
But in 1996, football came home. England hosted Euro 96 and a famous song by comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner epitomised the optimism of football's home nation during the festival-like competition with a sentimental nod to 'Thirty Years of Hurt' since 1966, the year that has weighed down England ever since. But above all, it showed supporting England as a thing that normal and respectable people did. The awarding of the competition to England was a major sign from world football that the 'bad old days' were over, and the competition went ahead in a positive atmosphere. There was just one small hitch, once again involving a penalty shoot out against Germany as England once again lost in that accursed format.
Things weren't perfect by the end of the decade and some of the old problems persisted. A 1995 friendly against Ireland in Dublin was abandoned owing to a riot by a group of English hooligans affiliated to various far-right organisations, and there was trouble at both the 1998 World Cup and Euro 00. But it was a far cry from previous decades, and there was a new optimism in the air about the English national team.
The Golden Generation
At the turn of the century, England had a huge amount of young and promising talent who would surely end the pain and bring the World Cup home once again. Players who would go onto become legends for their clubs such as right midfielder David Beckham, centre forward Michael Owen, central midfielder Steven Gerrard, and centre half Rio Ferdinand had all come of age. Manchester United's 1999 Champions League win was the first one for an English side since Liverpool in 1984, and it signalled a return to Europe's top competitions for English sides.
What better to signal a new era than by absolutely stuffing the main rivals? After the 1966 World Cup final, penalty agony in 1990 and 1996 and various other historical events, Germany became the team English fans wanted to beat the most. The tabloids revelled in the rivalry with their diplomatic headlines and terrace classics such as 'Ten German Bombers' and 'Two World Wars and One World Cup' remained commonplace. For their part, German fans tend to regard the Netherlands as their primary football rival.
And stuff them they did. In a World Cup qualifier in Munich in 2001, Germany suffered their first ever home loss in a World Cup qualifier as England beat them 5-1. This was a massive vindication of England's young side and the new manager Sven Goran Erikkson, who had received some scepticism as England's first foreign manager. German fans consoled themselves with the Dutch failure to qualify for the 2002 World Cup, but it marked a new era for England.
The side that humbled Germany included the core of the 'Golden Generation' with Gary Neville, Ashley Cole, Steven Gerrard, Rio Ferdinand, Sol Campbell, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Emile Heskey, Michael Owen, and Jamie Carragher all appearing.
The CEO of the Football Association, Adam Crozier, publicly described this cohort as the 'Golden Generation' who would go on to do for England what many of them were already doing for their clubs.
Japan 2002
England qualified for the 2002 World Cup in Japan in true fashion, with a David Beckham free kick past Greece putting England through. David Beckham had rapidly become the poster boy for the Golden Generation owing to his skill with free kicks and his glamorous appearance and personal life, including being married to the famous pop star Victoria Beckham, known as 'Posh Spice' in the Spice Girls.
Quick stop off for the first affair to be dragged through the tabloids on the way to Japan. In the spring of 2002, it turned out that Anglo-Swedish TV presenter Ulrika Jonsson had been having an affair with Sven. The News of the World (Britain's premier sleaze rag/newspaper, known as the News of the Screws in satirical magazine Private Eye or if you're my great-granddad, as the Whore's Gazette) absolutely loved a bit of sleaze. So much, in fact, they gave Ulrika a column for the next four years so she could launch the odd diatribe at Sven and his unconventional personal life.
Sven was bullish about England's chances in 2002, in a formula which would become predictable, he expected that this year would be the year.
To be fair, it started well. A group stage tie with Argentina gave England a chance to give a bloody nose to another rival. Owing to the 1982 Falklands War and Diego Maradona's 'Hand of God' in 1986, Argentina normally sits 3rd in the list of international footballing rivalries after Germany and Scotland. I remember as a fairly young child my parents explaining to me that the Argies were a 'dirty' side after the Hand of God and an acrimonious game in the 1998 World Cup and that beating them was pretty much essential. So, it was to relief all round when David Beckham scored from a penalty.
Draws with Sweden and Nigeria took England into the Round of 16, amusingly at the expense of Argentina who were 2002's shock group stage exit. England brushed Denmark aside 3-0 to set themselves up for a quarter final tie with the favourites and eventual champions, Brazil.
Was this to be England's year? Victory against Brazil would likely assure playing Germany in the final given the probability of beating Senegal or Turkey in the semi-final (so goes the England fan's logic) and we would doubtless give Jerry another pasting to make it Two World Wars and Two World Cups. The nation was abuzz. I willingly went to school early to watch it on the projector, the only time I've ever turned up a minute early of my own free will.
And Brazil won. Well, they were going to, weren't they? A good Michael Owen goal set England up for a 1-0 win and dreams of glory in Tokyo, but Messrs Ronaldo and Rivaldo put two past David Seaman to knock England out.
The circular firing squad and media postmortem was mysteriously absent. Brazil had some truly sublime talents, and surely a young side would come good and win it next time, wouldn't they?
The Road to Euro 04
A few distractions to get through before we get into the meat of England's next footballing failure. In late 2003 England played a friendly against Australia which was notable for two things. England were roundly beaten by Australia, a nation with whom England has fierce cricket and rugby rivalries but doesn't generally register in football, to echoes of condemnation. And a young Wayne Rooney became the youngest player to ever play for England, aged just 17. More on him later.
England's qualification for Euro 04 was generally uneventful, except for a shock draw to Macedonia, involving this filthy banger direct from a corner.
Rio Ferdinand managed to get an eight month ban from football by missing a drugs test. This was a blow as it removed one of Sven's two preferred centre halves from the squad. It also removed one of the main drama generators, a man who had gained notoriety in 2000, when Channel 4 aired a sex tape featuring him and fellow internationals Kieron Dyer and Frank Lampard filmed on holiday in Cyprus. Fortunately for us, his ban allowed an even more sublime drama king to take centre stage. Enter John Terry. Another new appearance was Chelsea teammate Wayne Bridge. More on them later.
Penalties, again?
Euro 04 started strong with an early goal from Frank Lampard against France. France, despite being England's rivals of choice in most fields, is not an especially strong football rivalry. The idea of France as a major footballing nation is relatively new and as far as football goes there isn't any real bad blood. Even Zinedine Zidane's injury time equaliser and winner didn't create any lasting resentment.
Comfortable wins over Switzerland and Croatia put England 2nd in the group and set them up for a draw against host nation Portugal. Of course, Portugal had their own wonderkid as the world was introduced to a certain Cristiano Ronaldo. The two sides drew 2-2 after extra time and the dreaded penalties loomed. Fear not, for dead-ball specialist David Beckham stepped up to the mark for his country.
Well.
Beckham joined Stuart 'Psycho' Pearce and Gareth Southgate in the list of players who gained notoriety for fluffing a penalty.
Sven started to come under criticism in the tabloids for his failure to deliver the goods. He came under more criticism when he, once again, couldn't keep it in his trousers, starting a proud tradition for the Golden Generation to become better known for tabloid gossip.
Young Rooney started strong as well, as it turned out that he had shagged a granny in a Liverpool brothel. Hopes of an incognito quickie with a lady of the night were dashed when a group of Everton fans (Rooney's then-club and boyhood team) found out and started chanting his name outside when he was doing the dirty.
At about this time, Ashley Cole began a relationship with the professional Geordie and pop star Cheryl Tweedy, a saga which would keep the News of the Screws engaged for some years.
Possibly the only bad thing about that sordid rag going under in 2011 is that I'm having a hell of a time finding the original news articles for this write up.
The Old Enemy Beckons
The 2006 World Cup is now on the horizon. And who is hosting it, other than Germany? What a coup it would be for the boys and England's national pride for, in a story lifted from a campy 1950s war film, our plucky boys to parachute in Berlin and win the World Cup from right under Fritz's nose?
Well, if they could get there. Northern Ireland, traditionally footballing minnows, beat England 1-0 in a qualifier. This was Sven's first defeat in a qualifier but the tabloids attacked his playing style and, being a Swede, the lack of pashun and dersiah that a redblooded Englishman would have. England did qualify with a match to spare, so surely it would be a smooth ride to Germany and for our plucky heroes to take on the Hun and win?
Like fuck it would. Sven managed to get into the tabloids again. At the time, the News of the Screws employed an undercover journalist who specialised in 'sting' stories aimed at prominent figures. Mazher Mahmood was popularly known as the 'Fake Sheikh' owing to his tendency to masquerade as an Arab oil sheikh. He approached Sven as an Arab businessman hoping to invest in English football, and Sven seemingly said told Mahmood to buy Aston Villa (a respectable Premier League side from Birmingham) as he hoped to take the Villa job after the 2006 World Cup and bring David Beckham in from Real Madrid to be his captain. The imbroglio fatally undermined Sven, who was forced to announce a resignation effective after the World Cup. Essentially working through his notice period, it isn't hard to see what impact on the squad that might have.
England turned up in Germany, and the tabloid media brought its legendary tact and diplomacy. England fans made no reference to past historic events before matches. Songs like this were condemned in the respectable press which saw them as crass chants from drunken shirtless louts, but many football fans see these chants as lighthearted banter.
On the pitch England beat Paraguay and Trinidad in the group stages before another turgid draw with Sweden, putting England through to the Round of 16 at the top of their group.
Sven began to deviate from the traditional 442 formation, using Rooney up front alone and playing a third man in central midfield, usually Michael Carrick. We'll talk a little more about the significance of 442 in a bit.
A 1-0 win over Ecuador set England up for another quarter-final tie, this time against Portugal, who had knocked them out on penalties in 2004.
Surely England wouldn't be knocked out on penalties by Portugal again would they? Curses aren't real surely?
A 0-0 snooze fest led to the inevitable. And the inevitable happened. England's players missed three penalties. This was now becoming a serious mental block, with England going out of the 1990, 1998, and 2006 World Cups on penalties as well as Euro 96 and 04.
It wasn't Sven's problem now. As agreed with the FA, he left the role thereafter. But who could replace him?
The Wally with a Brolly
After the pashunless Sven, it was time to get a proper Englishman back in charge. Enter Steve McClaren. McClaren had proper club pedigree, taking Middlesbrough to a UEFA Cup Final in 2006 after winning a League Cup in 2004.
His first media scandal came when the News of the Screws claimed Ashley Cole had taken part in a homosexual orgy. They settled out of court and retracted the stories but this was just another time in which the tabloid press pursued sensational stories about members of the England team.
McClaren gave John Terry the captaincy and dropped David Beckham from his line ups. There was a period of poor form in which England scored once in five matches, followed by when he told a press conference they could write what they wanted after a lacklustre win over Andorra because he wasn't going to say anything else. McClaren recalled David Beckham and form picked up once again. It wasn't enough though, as England lost against Russia before the final gameday of the qualification cycle for Euro 08. This meant that England had to avoid defeat against Croatia, who obligingly beat England 3-2 at Wembley while Russia took 2nd place with a win over minnows Andorra. This was the first time in 24 years that England had not qualified for a European Championship.
The Daily Mail's headline the next day became one of those legendary headlines that goes down in a country's collective pop-culture memory. The Wally with a Brolly epitomised what was then the shortest ever tenure in the England job.
Who could possibly prepare the club for the 2010 World Cup after a period sat on the sidelines of international football?
Enter Fabio
Fabio Cappello was another foreign hiring. He was widely welcomed in the English press as a notorious disciplinarian who could curb the excesses allowed under the relaxed Sven and the disastrous McClaren.
Fabio rigidly played 442 football. In England, 442 is more than a football formation, it is a way of life. 442 means standing up for traditional no-nonsense English values like work ethic, pluck, and willingness to die for the team over fancy foreigners with their poncy passing skills. This initially endeared him to the press, which demanded nothing more than the most patriotic form of football involved.
Capello saw Beckham dropped once again for his initial set of friendly matches. In goal he started to play David 'Calamity' James, who was perhaps unfairly scapegoated for being a somewhat eccentric keeper prone to errors.
In the 2010 qualification group, England did very well. They comfortably qualified, including with a win over Germany to keep the fans happy, and everyone looked forward to watching England bring it home from the first ever African World Cup.
But first, an interlude for the biggest of the tabloid shitstorms.
Viva John Terry
In January 2010 a certain individual successfully placed a 'Superinjunction' preventing details of an extra-marital affairs being published. The existence of the injunction was also not to be revealed. Another judge overruled this and the News of the Screws was free to report the information it had. Namely, John Terry had an affair with the partner of Wayne Bridge, former Chelsea teammate and current England teammate. Wayne Bridge in the end wasn't involved in the 2010 World Cup, but many were naturally shocked a captain would do something like this to a team member.
At the time there was a prominent scandal around the use of 'injunctions' by high profile people exploiting England's lax law on these issues, and John Terry was merely one of several.
In any case, the News of the Screws ended up apologising to the woman involved, in a fairly remarkable move which in hindsight was an early indication of the radical shifts in the tabloid press during the early 10s.
John Terry was stripped of the captaincy for the first time and replaced with Rio Ferdinand for the upcoming World Cup.
Germany, again?
It started so well. England was put into a relatively soft group on paper and were the clear favourites. The Sun's legendary tact once again.
Match number one of 'HMS Piss the Group' was against the USA. Again, not really a footballing nation, the expectation of an easy win was high. It started well with an early goal from Steven Gerrard before a goalkeeping error etched into my mind today. Rob Green mishandled a save, giving Clint Dempsey a goal. A frustrating 0-0 draw with Algeria indicated something was going wrong.
Were England about to be knocked out of an allegedly soft group? Fortunately a goal against Slovenia rescued it, but England finished 2nd in the group behind the USA, leading to a Round of 16 tie against Germany.
Once again, the red tops employed their legendary diplomacy
Did it go to penalties? No, but don't breathe a sigh of relief yet.
England got stuffed 4-1. Properly stuffed. The only consolation was that an obvious Frank Lampard goal was not awarded because the linesman didn't see it properly. In the days before VAR it really was that rudimentary. The reason this mattered was because England had been awarded a similarly controversial goal in the 1966 World Cup final, many Germans reassured themselves knowing that it could have gone so differently if Hurst's 2nd goal hadn't been allowed. At least they were now even on the controversial crossbar goal count.
Was this a consolation to the press?
Of course not
Once again, the red tops hounded a squad who had failed to live up to the increasingly lofty expectations.
But at least Wayne Rooney got one more romp in the tabloids out, as it turned out he had paid hush money to a high-class escort he had been 'seeing'.
Viva John Terry 2
Fabio quietly gave John Terry the captaincy back. He still had one shitstorm left in him. And it was ugly. He was accused of calling Anton Ferdinand, brother of Rio, a 'fucking black cunt' during a game between Chelsea and West London neighbours Queen's Park Rangers. After being charged by police for using racist language, Terry was once again stripped of the England captaincy, which went to Steven Gerrard.
Fabio, who had come under heavy fire after the 2010 World Cup, resigned over this. He didn't want to take the captaincy from John Terry but the FA forced his hand and he left the role in early 2012.
John Terry was actually acquitted of racially abusing Anton Ferdinand in a criminal trial, but an FA hearing found him guilty and punished him with a fairly short ban. This was controversial because of the different standards of proof. A conviction in English criminal courts needs proof 'beyond reasonable doubt', whereas the FA hearing used civil rules where guilt is based on the balance of probabilities. Terry apologised for his language, but he retained the Chelsea captaincy and never directly apologised to Anton.
Epilogue
With Fabio's departure the classic 'Golden Generation' era ended, even though players like Gerrard and Lampard still turned out for England. In the interests of time and length I shall give a summary until about 2016 before wrapping up.
Roy Hodgson managed England from 2012-6. England were eliminated in the group stage of the 2014 World Cup after losing to Uruguay and Italy and drawing to Costa Rica. Ironically Italy, the other team expected to go to the knockouts, was the other eliminated side. This was a bigger trauma than 2010, although massive changes in journalism (such as the News of the Screws closing down and far stricter regulation) meant that there was less of the constant tabloid coverage of the fallout.
2016 saw a decent showing in Euro 16, but once again the media got cocky before a tie against a theoretically weaker side only for England to get knocked out by them. Bravo Iceland.
Sam Allardyce replaced Roy Hodgson and lasted a grand total of two months before being caught telling undercover journalists how to get around various financial rules in football before criticising previous managers and some of his players.
Finally, Gareth Southgate came and has seemingly reinvented the side, making it to the semi-finals in 2018. But at least it wasn't penalties then.
Why did the Golden Generation Fail?
On paper they should have been at the top of the game. Pep Guardiola compared them to the Spanish flowering of talent which led to their 2010 World Cup win. There are a few factors here.

Crowdsourced 2020 Worlds Power Rankings: The Results!

A couple days ago, I posted a quick and simple survey asking people to choose which of two Worlds teams they thought would win in a head-to-head matchup. It was a great success, with almost a million results and even almost causing my website to crash. And since people want to see the numbers, here is Reddit's Worlds power rankings:
Team Rating
Top Esports 7.257
DAMWON Gaming 7.207
G2 Esports 6.884
JD Gaming 6.108
DRX 5.789
Gen.G 5.713
Fnatic 5.564
Suning 5.224
LGD 5.154
Rogue 4.714
TSM 4.659
MAD Lions 4.383
Team Liquid 3.736
FlyQuest 3.698
Unicorns of Love 3.000
Supermassive 1.674
Machi Esports 1.552
PSG Talon 1.547
INTZ 1.485
V3 Esports 1.255
Rainbow7 0.750
Legacy Esports 0.646
In chart form
I use a method known as Maximum Likelihood to turn all of the raw data into a rating and then I took the natural log of the numbers to produce a more human-readable result. The absolute number doesn't matter as much as the difference between the two. For instance, the relative difference between DAMWON and G2 is about the same as that between JD and DRX (~0.32).
Individual head-to-head results can be found here, and the head-to-heads that are derived from the rankings themselves (which differ slightly) are here. Raw data can be found here.

Thoughts on the rankings

Just like last year, the top two ranked teams are extremely close, with China's Top Esports being only a 2% favorite over Korea's DAMWON Gaming. Interestingly enough, when put head-to-head, the former team was picked 58% of the time, but DAMWON was aided by voters being much more confident about their chances versus their fellow Korean teams as opposed to Top against the other Chinese representatives. Europe's G2 Esports are slightly further behind, though they are still within half a point of the frontrunners and were 2:1 favorites over every other team at Worlds.
After the champions of the top three regions, there is a six-way logjam between the remaining Korean and Chinese teams and Fnatic. All of them are within one point of each other and no team ended up being more than 60% favorites over the one below them. They mostly ended up in different groups this Worlds, which means that we ended up having a fairly balanced draw this year, at least according to Reddit. Of course, this means that it'll be harder to tell if these six were in the right order or not, but they might end up meeting in the playoffs.
Following the playoff favorites, we have the two remaining European teams as well as TSM, North America's champion. And yes, that's right, you guys put Rogue over TSM by a margin of 0.06. All three certainly have chances to move on, but they might have to face some uphill battles. Speaking of Europe, Rogue-MAD Lions had the greatest discrepency between people's votes and final percentages when all other teams are included. Usually people are more certain of teams within a region up facing each other (since they had recently played), but fully three-quarters of you chose the Rogue when you had the chance. However, their relatively equal preference against the other 20 squads meant that with regards to the final power rankings, it is only considered a 58-42 matchup.
I'd like to take a moment here to talk about TSM. People seemed to irrationally love them or irrationally hate them much more than they did any other team. On one hand, almost 15% of people picked them over Top Esports, which was good enough for 6th overall. On the other extreme, they were only favored 93% of the time against the bottom 7, compared to 97% for the two teams around the North American squad. This ultimately appeared to work out in TSM's favor, as they finished ahead of the MAD Lions despite the latter actually being preferred in the head-to-head.
The only other case of a team ahead in the one-on-one losing out were North America's 2nd and 3rd seeds. FlyQuest, thanks to them winning 3-2 in the playoffs, won the individual battle against Team Liquid, but people ultimately liked the veteran team more when paired off against the rest of the field, allowing them to jump ahead one spot to 13th. They're both about 1.5 points behind the top 8, so they both have a lot of proving to do before they can make playoffs.
With the demise of the LMS as we knew it and the absense of Vietnam, the Unicorns of Love are our sole entrant not in the top 4 regions given any shot against those teams. There's a two-point difference between 14th and 16th, and as such they're given decent (but not great) odds against Team Liquid and FlyQuest, but are comfortable favorites over the remaining minor regions. When given a direct choice, the Russian representative wasn't given much of a chance against any team ahead of them (probably due to the lack of faith in any of the smaller regions), but their great performance against everyone below them put them in a reasonably respectable spot.
Finally, we have the bottom 7 teams, all competing in play-ins. These are always a bit of a crapshoot, since most voters wouldn't be as familiar with them as they would their own region's teams, but ultimately it shook out such that Turkey's Supermassive was slightly ahead while very little faith was given to Latan America's Rainbow7 or Oceania's Legacy Esports. Of note is that the two PCS representatives, Machi Esports and PSG Talon, were virtually tied despite the former going 5-3 in two best of 5s and the latter missing three players for their first few matches.

Some meta commentary

There is a term in polling called the Lizardman's Constant, which came from a survey that purported to show that 4% of Americans believed that their leaders were secretly reptillian. The actual answer is obviously far lower, but the lesson to be learned is that about 2-5% of the time, depending on the methodology and audience, people will choose a "wrong" answer, either deliberately or by accident. This adds a baseline of noise to the poll, and is most evident when comparing the very top and bottom teams. For instance it's extremely unlikely that 1 in 40 people who participated actually believe that Japan's V3 Esports is a better team than the pre-tournament favorites, but that is what the raw data purports to show. This generally doesn't make too much of a difference (unless maybe if you're TSM), though it might obscure the true perceived gap between the top 14 and bottom 8 teams at Worlds.
One important thing to note is that the percentages do not indicate how often one team will beat the other, but instead the odds that they're "better". Upsets happen and the worse team on paper does sometimes win. If Supermassive were to play Top Esports 200 teams, they would almost certainly win more than once, despite what a naive reading of the percentages would say. I've seen people use these numbers for predictions in the past, and my suggestion would be to add in a fudge factor of some sort if you wish to do something of the sort.
I have once again been astounded by the amount of participation I've gotten in this ranking, and I'd like to thank the tens of thousands of you for contributing a few minutes of your time. I have plans on doing a weekly version of this when the LCS and LEC starts up next year, so keep your eyes out!

About the data

There were a total of 939,274 votes cast from 46,312 different users. For each person, they were given 25 matchups to vote on. Each team appears 2 or 3 times, weighted such that teams from NA, EU, KR, and CN did not face teams from other regions as often. Within each paring of teams there were between 1774 (Suning vs. Rainbow7) and 6563 (Fnatic vs. TSM) votes, giving a margin of error of +/- 2 points at most for each individual match.

This is my forecast as to how would end all territorial conflict involving Armenia!

There are market predictions, climate predictions and I here my geopolitical prediction to affect the region within the next 5 to 10 years. I haven't found an appropriate flair to attach but this is my forecast which I hope will answer some of your questions.
I am trying to answer the questions as to what strategic value the cancellation of the Treaty of Kars may deliver to Moscow, and what may be the reasons for Moscow to make recently such great concessions regarding Turkey's connection to Azerbaijan?
Before we make a checklist of what may motivate Russia to cancel the treaty, I would like to draw your attention on the previous three cancellation attempts. There are three formal ones, and undoubtedly Kars popped-up in many governmental discussions and debates [optional read, below the points extracted from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Kars]
  1. After World War II, the Soviet Union attempted to annul the treaty and to regain its lost territory. According to Nikita Khrushchev, Deputy Premier Lavrentiy Beria goaded his fellow Georgian Joseph Stalin into taking action on the issue, insisting on the return of historical Georgian territories. Stalin eventually agreed, and on 7 June 1945, Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov informed the Turkish ambassador in Moscow that the provinces of Kars, Ardahan and Artvin should be returned to the Soviet Union in the name of both the Georgian and the Armenian Socialist Soviet Republics
  2. Moscow revisited the treaty in 1968 when it attempted to negotiate a border adjustment with Turkey in which the ruins of Ani would be transferred to Soviet Armenia in exchange for two Azerbaijani villages in the area of Mount Akbaba
  3. December 2006, Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian said that Armenia accepts the treaty as the legal successor to the Armenian SSR but noted that Turkey did not adhere to the treaty's terms.[23] Specifically, Article XVII of the treaty called for the "free transit of persons and commodities without any hindrance" among the signatories and that the parties would take "all the measures necessary to maintain and develop as quickly as possible railway, telegraphic, and other communications"
  4. Following the shootdown of the Russian Sukhoi Su-24 over the Syria–Turkey border in November 2015 and the rise of Russo-Turkish tensions, members of the Communist Party of Russia proposed annulling the Treaty of Moscow and, by extension, the Treaty of Kars.[25][26] Initially, the Russian Foreign Ministry considered that action to send a political message to the government of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.[25]
In other words, Russia was and is still very motivated to cancel the agreement, but the purpose of my post is to highlight the reasons that may drive Russia to more decisive steps. We have at least five geopolitical elements that would rank in the eyes of Russia Kars’s cancellation as a top priority goal. So, let us make our checklist of what makes Kars so critical for Russia, and I identified those three crucial points:
  1. Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan (main oil pipeline named after Heydar Aliyev), plus Trans-Anatolian gas pipeline & Baku–Tbilisi–Erzurum gas pipeline (a.k.a. Trans-Caspian Gas Pipeline). Those three energy roads are nothing less than energy food supplies of critical importance for Europe and even more for Turkey. I am sure some of you asked yourself the question, as to why then Turkey is hysterically looking to become energy producer & exporter? After all, just before the Karabakh war, Turkey almost clashed with Greece in a sea battle. Could it be that the answer has been staring at you? Having Azerbaijan as key supplier one may think, why on Earth Turkey is panicking so much for new findings in the Mediterranean and the Black sea? Could it be that they see upcoming historical changes? Maybe because soon Baku's supply will become too expensive or even unaffordable? To get straight to the point, Russia is the only country after Armenia can still put hands on those pipes and control the region using international laws. Just think about the power Russia would gain if the Europeans become dependent of Russia’s goodwill for all oil and gas going through Azerbaijanis pipelines, which by the way also can be used by Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.
  2. The following critical advantage for Russia, would be the control over Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway. At first glance no big benefits pop-up from that road but with an increasing demand of Europe to connect with Asia and vice versa, it cannot be ignored that the railway's potential will play an important role. So, yet another powerful economic and political tool in the hands of Georgia, Turkey, and Azerbaijan. But again, Russia is excluded from the game.
We should forget either the importance of Russia's power over China. Beijing is certainly looking to diversify its land links to Europe, and see the connection to Azerbaijan and Turkey, as a means to achieve some independence from Russia. But the latter is not ignorant of the dreams to gain independence from Russia, which is shared by many countries. No doubt, control over railway and road connections represent a massive game-changer for Russia. The only big problem again is, how to land some Russian territories in the middle of all that?
  1. Georgia’s journey with Nato is yet another hammer over Moscow’s head. No matter how many Ossetias and Abkhazias join Russia, the latter will never occupy Georgia in full or capture strategic territories to take over the pipeline. If everything stays as it is, Russia will stay too isolated. With no control over the pipe channels, no control over the railways or road, and with an increased vulnerability hovering over Armenia’s south, Russia would need deep sand and long neck to ignore the losses in the south. Therefore, I am exploring any other way-out Russia may target soon, as I am confident, an upcoming event will change the current setup.
Now as you are clear with the points above, let us check what is inside Kars’s agreement. Should the Kars agreement be cancelled, the district of Artvin, Ardahan, Kars and Igdir may join Russia or Armenia. However, I am more confident to say, Russia will take all of that under its wings. There are in total around 500 thousand people living in those territories. In other words, in terms of social difficulties, Russia will accommodate all the inhabitants of that region with ease. I take the side of a political settlement without a full-scale war long-lasting war aiming to occupy the land. A short but violent confrontation between Russia - Armenia vs Turkey - Azerbaijan fall in my forecast.
Eventually, Turkey and Russia should agree on such annexation. Russia would have to manage a reasonable number of social issues to create a new Federation. Chances are high as well that Russia will leverage its Armenian diaspora to rebuild the region and make out of it an autonomous Armenian Republic like Chechnya is now for Chechen people. I am happy to increase the volume of everyone who is thinking now, why on Earth Turkey would sign an annexation or tolerate retake of such strategic territory? The simple answer is because they will have little political support from East to West. One should not forget that attack against Armenia will have a sickening impact across the globe. Russia France, and why not US, may raise some shocking facts and accusations about Turkey’s genocidal policy on a global podium, a bit like what happened with Serbia under the rule of Slobodan Milosevic. Points that until now were under the rubbles of other headlines to hide Ankara's shame. In my view, this is exactly what Russia is keen to exploit, and they will do it with success.
Going back to my initial point, Russia has been eyeing for many years to get back some if not all the territories under Kars agreement. Many elements suggest that such annexation would bring to Russia not lesser power than the control over Bosporus. By taking all those historical Armenian territories, Russia will secure a control over Asia’s oil/gas supply to Europe. Georgia’s Nato saga will turn into fiasco while the infrastructure control, will be the cherry on the cake. If this turn of events becomes a reality, Russia’s control over Europe and Asia will likely end Nato's expansion.
Naturally, such a scenario will be a golden age for Armenia. An Armenian Republic of Russia bordering the western border of the current State of Armenia, and controlling almost every single connection Azerbaijan has with Turkey, will mark the end of all aggressivity from Azerbaijan. Eventually, Armenia may well open the corridor from Baku to Nakhichevan, but it would not be in the same conditions imagined today. Meanwhile, Russia’s ally Iran, will gain further freedoms. With Georgia no longer Nato’s ally, one can imagine a non-stop safe train connection from Moscow to the Persian Gulf, passing through Georgia and Armenia. WOW!
Now you may think, is there a connection between the hypothetical scenario above with the current Karabakh crisis? Many believe that Russia is afraid of Turkey and try to please them as much as possible. In my view, this is nowhere near the reality. The reality is that Russia is seating on top of thousands of cruise and ballistic missiles capable of destroying any military target without sending in there any planes, drones, or soldiers. I am not even covering other military advantages Moscow has over Ankara.
However, let us be careful here. Russia cannot just annex a territory when Turkey is behaving well, and Russia nowadays shows warm and helpful policy towards Turkey. Well, this may drastically change because of the new border demarcation around Syunik specifically. With the new setup where Armenia is more than every vulnerable to war with Azerbaijan and Turkey, one should also assess, is 'this' not a Russian trap pushing Turkey to commit the grave mistake they would not even think of? By saying 'this' I make a firm reference to the peace agreement of 10th of November 2020, and more specifically to Russia's green light to territory hand over which many struggle to understand. I am not talking about Karabakh conflict but about Armenia’s south. We all know Turkey’s appetite for flash invasions, and we saw it in the 1970s in Cyprus. Everyone understands that by allowing the surrounding of CSTO's only ally in the Caucasus by Turkey's friend, Russia's defence strategy in the south is at risk. But don't worry! The guys in Moscow are not that stupid, and thinking that Russia will not back Armenia in case of military aggression, it's forgetting Russia appetite for Turkey's East.
To simplify my point, I suspect Russia is making it possible to Turkey to use Azerbaijan to capture Syunik. With Azerbaijan attacking the tinny Syunik from both sides, East and West, the victory will appear almost guaranteed. For those who still think that Azerbaijan will never do that because of CSTO, I would suggest recalling the mutual accusations of ceasefire violation that lasted for weeks.
The last war was a success for Azerbaijan thanks to Baku's lies accepted by the international community. They poured accusations that Armenia started the war and kept on breaking ceasefire when everyone knew that the only side desperate for blood was and is Azerbaijan. One can win by misinformation but should be prepared for a boomerang effect.
Some headlines may pop-up accusing Azerbaidjan of launching an assault against Armenian soil, and accusations from Moscow and Paris may put Turkey and Azerbaijan in a challenging position. Either they will need to back off from some of the borders or go-in-full. Then, Turkey would have to either attack Armenia/ CSTO or Azerbaijan as ally forever.
They will face the little surprise that Armenia’s military forces are far from being destroyed. Not many noticed that Armenia’s regular army, air defence, tank divisions and other forces had little involvement in the last war. In other words, no matter how doubting it may sound, Armenia’s military is still very much fresh and combat-ready.
Besides, CSTO’s ally Armenia will get the green light to defend itself as much as possible with all the available tools and resources. This time around there will not be unarmed SU30s, or idle Islanders with helicopters blocked in the hangars. It needs to be clarified that Azerbaijan never got in fight with Armenia proper and Armenia’s weaponry had a minimal deployment in the last war. The chances are high that in such attack Armenia delivers to Azerbaijan massive losses, including in Nakhichevan. This would be the historic moment for Turkey to trigger Turkey’s aggression against Armenia and hence against CSTO. This will inevitably lead to a confrontation with Russia, but this time around no one in Moscow will stay quiet as they have been waiting for this moment for many years. It is important to note that no agreement would protect at that moment Turkey. Nato is not covering the act of aggression from a Member State, and new amendments have confirmed that point. Turkey has the right to intervene in Nakhichevan invasion, but the case scenario of Azeri aggression invalidates the Turkish right to protect Nakhichevan.
So, from this scenario, everything adds-up perfect for Russia to get angry with Turkey, and trigger the cancellation of the treaty of Kars as a punishment for attacking a tinny country victim of a previous genocide which is also though a CSTO ally.
This post describes my theory on what are the advantages for Russia from the recent Karabakh war. What may be the secret plan Moscow drawn with Armenia. Why Nikol has such great backing from Moscow, and what the final solution to Karabakh conflict may be.
Feel free to comment, share, bookmark, downvote. My only ask guys, if you believe everything is going into an abyss, Armenia lost, none of this is accurate, or I am too optimistic, please do not spread any negativity. Try to argue your feedback with clear reasons as to why this or that will never happen, so everyone understands what you mean. Thank you!

Cloudtemplar's Thought on Group Draw

translated from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSEkJWhwvf8&t=1s
This is an introductory video to Worlds. I will not get into details into each team but talk more as a group. An analysis on each team will come later. This one will just be a quick and simple introduction to each group(in only about 47 minutes). For a detailed analysis on each team, that will happen later maybe when the groups are finalized?(When playin is over)
World Format Change: https://www.reddit.com/leagueoflegends/comments/isvzf4/i_made_my_own_worlds_2020_format_summary_because/?ref=share&ref_source=link

Playin Stage

Group A

Legacy Esport(OPL):

Think of them as the king of OPL. They won basically everything in OPL got first place in Spring and became the representative of OPL. They are a solid team, solid performance... They are not very aggressive but seek to punish enemy's mistakes. They are kind of similar to Damwon. They are a Top side focus team with bot lane;s role of just being solid. Don't be too serious about the Damwon comparison they are just a team like Damwon that plays around top side.

But realistically speaking it is not going to be easy for them to get out of group.

Papara SuperMassive(TR):

Turkey might be a familiar name to many people. It is where a lot of Korean players went. Right now it is Kakao and Snowflower as the Korea player in the team. They also have Zeitnot, Bolulu, and Armut. GBM is also the coach of the team. They are okay but the chance of them winning is a bit low.

INTZ(CBLoL):

Brazil is an aggressive region. They like to fight and skirmish but also makes a lot of mistakes. To put in a bad way you can say that they fiesta a bit too much. So it is kind of hard to say if they are strong.

As for Legacy, SuperMassive, and INTZ they are okay and there are definitely good things to talk about. But there is a big difference between these three team and Liquid and MAD. I think Legacy is the better team out of the three if I have to say.

Team Liquid(NA 4th #3):

Team Liquid are famous for their Impact and Mr.Corejj. Mr. Corejj have shown us great performance and continues to do so in Team Liquid. But if I have to describe Team Liquid's playstyle is that they are very defensive. Barrier, Turtle, it is a very slow and "slimy" team. To be honest I don't hear a lot of good things about Team Liquid. They win against the team they should win and they lose against teams they should lose.

MAD Lion(EU #4):

When people talk about Mad Lion they often talk about their bot or Shadow. Yeah they are a "strong team". When they were good they made some insane plays. But their games wasn't very stable/consistent. I personally think Mad Lion would be at a higher standing than Team Liquid because I like team that have a higher high than consistency.

If you think Team Liquid and MAD Lion will make it out then you probably are safe.

Group B

LGD(LPL 4th):

So LGD is the fourth seed of LPL and from that fact alone they will probably make it out. This is how good LPL have become as a region that LGD will probably get out the group just because they are from LPL. But compared to other LPL team they are not a very outstanding team. They are a bit inconsistent but it is still enough to get out of group.

PSG Talon(PCS #2):

So PCS are consisted of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Southeast Asia. It's like a major region but also it is also not a major region. Unfortunately River and Tank, jungler and midlaner of PCS Talon are unable to come play during playin. And I believe some of the coaching staff also wasn't able to go. So they had to advance to the group stage in order for the full roster to play.

V3 Esport(LJL):

So LJL is the Japan region and most people probably were expecting DFM. And it wouldn't be weird if DFM came but it was V3 that was able to advance. There are some Korean players here. Bugi played on Flashwolf a while ago and he showed a great performance in the final. Some are probably hoping for Sengoku Gaming for Pirean and Blank but anyway it was V3 that was able to advance.

To be honest, the LJL region is hard to be called a strong League. If you look at the games the game speed is either really slow and/or they generally have a lot of things to work on. I think there will be a big difference between them and the major regions.

Unicorns of Love(LCL):

So we have Unicorns of Love who showed an okay performance as a team considering that they are from a minor region. You might recognize some of the players' name. I think we even did an event with them...

They are a really Okay team. They are decisive, they like to dive a lot. However there are some mistakes that are enough to make a difference between them and the major regions. But they have a shot to get 2nd.
Rainbow7(LLA):
They struggled a lot. They struggled all the way from here... There are too much things to talk about. Today it's just an introduction/brief summary. let's do teams in detail later.

Group B: Prediction

LGD is basically guaranteed to be first. Then it would be... Unicorn of Love? I think PSG Talon also have a shot but V3 and Rainbow7 will probably not.
Cloudtemplar here talks about the Group Stage format. Please check the World Format Change at the top for the information.

Group Stage:

Group A

No Matter who comes up from Playin I think Sunning and G2 are pretty comfortable with the group.

G2:

The scariest thing about G2 is their final final form. We always talk about SKT's form in the finals. I think G2 is a team that gets better over time. They are kind of like a chameleon adapting as they go. They are really scary but at the beginning, they are a bit shaky. So if G2 got a bad group it is actually more dangerous for them than you might think. I think this group is perfect for G2 to get their form up while training.

Sunning

They are a really strong team. We don't want to admit this but every team from LPL are strong. There is no LPL team in Worlds you can dismiss. I would say there are 90% chance G2 and Sunning goes up. As for the 10% it would be if Team Liquid came to this group and play a slow but solid games. But it is only 10%.

Team Liquid

Hmmm... So Team Liquid reminds me of old SKT in a good way and in a bad way. What I mean by old SKT is that they play slow but also able to explode(in a good way), good team fight, plays control deck, and always slow to Meta change.

LCK vs LCS rivalry

So I said this before but I will........ kind of admit LEC and LPL is on top. But I will never let LCS be above LCK. If that happens... I can't take it anymore. That is our last pride that we have to protect. That is my World's goal. Out of the four main region we will always be at least third place...
I feel like I am dissing NA too much XD. I am not dissing them it is just that from looking at their games you can see the strength of the region. For people who watched all the League[Not sure if he meant all league or just major] not everyone might shared my thought but there are a lot of things lacking in NA.

How Cloudtemplar Judge a team

So how I judge a team is really simple. It is how "hard" I get from watching the team. NA just doesn't do it for me.

Machi Gaming

Let's talk about Machi Gaming that might make Team Liquid's hope and dream a bit harder. Gemini is a player that I casted a few time. He is a really talented jungler with great mechanics. As the first seed of PCS they have a certain level of quality but just not enough against the other two.

Group B

So this is the group Damwon is in with JDG, Rogue and maybe Team liquid. Let's assume the worst and assume Team Liquid is in the group. The group looks actually quite difficult. Like, my top 3 teams in World is: Damwon, JDG, TES. and top 4 would be +G2. I don't think this is an unpopular opinion and it is the template for many people's top 4 teams. Having two teams in top 3 in a group will always make things difficult.

JDG and TES is a very strong team. Some might disagree but I think you will change your mind after watching their recent games especially the JDG vs TES series. Their team fight, objective control are out of this world. I don't want to get too much detail but just know that they are a really strong team.

Rogue

So Rogue is also in this group. You can't really dismiss any teams from LPL or LEC. And from what I see Rogue is a pretty strong team. They do sometime randomly throw at mid-late game but their laning phase are solid. And their top XD.

Finn

So Rogue's top laner is called Finn. He did have some good games and he can be good but... Recently he has been doing really badly. His cs was pretty bad too. Sometime the cs difference... just happen at top. Thankfully the team covers for him and he is pretty good at tank champions. But most importantly rest of his team are pretty good.

So Yes Rogue's top might struggle, like he have to lane against Nuguri and this and that. Internet have already did all the matchups so I won't do it here. But if top is able to hold on its own and Rogue's bot are able to carry then Rogue is a pretty scary team. And then you have to add in the potential of Team Liquid so this group is a really tight group.

Group Prediction

That being said I think Damwon and JDG will come up. I am 80% confident of this and 15% confident of Rogue and I will give 5% to Team Liquid.

JDG

So there is a lot of analysts that describe JDG as a Kanavi one man team and that JDG depends on Kanavi. I personally disagree. Yes, Kanavi is a main threat and the team play arounds him especially LvMao. I think this narratives started because people perceive their mid to be weaker. So their mid laner is Yagao and despite him showing great performances. He is often compared to players like Knight and Rookie. So he often seems to be underwhelming which is why the spotlight is often on Kanavi. When a certain player get attention the other players often get less attention.

That being said I agree that Yagao is a bit underwhelming XD. I think Yagao is good but compared to Knight...

Zoom is another important player. If you look at Kanavi's pathing he often paths to Top first. His synergy with Zoom often allow him to get first blood and snowballs from there. They don't have a weak lane and combined with their great Macro and Lvmao-

LvMao

So do you guys MSC where we said that compared to LPL LCK's jungler and support a bit lacking? LPL's jungler and support are really great at playmaking. Anyway JDG is a good team.

Group C

This is not the worst group GenG could've been in. Why? Because TSM is in the group XD. All jokes aside I have respect to TSM and to LEC but it is just that LPL's first three seed are so strong dodging one is a great advantage.

This group had probably the most interesting narratives/stories. TSM and Fnatic goes way back to season 1 and has great stories. GenG if you include SSG then also have great narratives. And LGD is LPL fourth seed. Of course in terms of achievement GenG(SSG included) are probably the most impressive but TSM and Fnatic goes way back. Players like Doublelift and Reckless have withstood the test of time and overcame many hurdles. Ruler too also withstands the test. The narratives at bot will be crazy.

CloudTemplar's history with Doubleliftu

For people who don't understand how impressive that is imagine Me(cloudtemplar) are still playing as LCK representatives. That is how crazy that was, like Doublelift was playing when I was playing. I personally played against Doublelift an insane amount of time. Like we scrimmed like crazy together about 8 or 9 years ago. We practically begged them for a scrim waiting like a hour or two just to have a chance to scrim against them. "Ah God of League, from the country of Freedom and League of Legend please spare us some knowledge." It was really hard to get scrim at that time.

TSM

I know a lot of people are excited to see Bjergsen's Zilean and such. The process of TSM coming here to be honest was a miracle. They had to overcome many things to qualify. For people who doesn't know C9 are suppose to be here. Everyone expected to see C9 advance to World. C9's performance till Spring was extraordinary. But their performance dropped when Summer came.

Fall By Summer

This kind of story happened in many regions too. FPX/IG in LPL, T1 in LCK, C9 in LCS. Maintaining form is very hard. It is a bit unfortunate that they couldn't come but I mean this is a sport these kinds of things happen.

Group Prediction

I think 90% GenG will definitely get a spot. Not sure if 1st or 2nd but GenG will almost always get a spot. I think right now it is Fnatic> LGD >TSM. I am not looking down at TSM but by watching their games and assessing their power level I think this is true. In terms of win probability it is kind of like: Fnatic(45%) > LGD(35%) > TSM(30%). Ah shoot sorry I can't do math(It adds up to 110%)... Ah Whatever you guys know what I mean.

I trust GenG. To be specific I trust GenG's bot lane. GenG Top is solid but compared to other tops it is quite even. But GenG's bot lane is probably the strongest in the group and bot lane is the best lane to snowball. Why? Because it has two people.

Group D

TES

Do I really need to say anything? TES is a really strong team. Maybe it is because of Knight but the team as a whole is really scary. Even Yuyanjia who is not as good as compared to other LPL support like LvMao, got better recently. Even support who is considered the weak link are solid. It is a team where there is no weak lane and they have an insanely strong Mid lane.

MAD & FlyQuest

So I talked about MAD Lion a bit. I think they have a chance but the chance is not that high. Interestingly FlyQuest isn't that bad. Although they are not the first seed I think from the games I think they are the best team in NA. They are a very solid team with great balance.

DRX

So DRX had been getting a lot of bad ratings. It is not like they played bad the whole season but that recently they didn't do well. A lot of attention has been Chovy and how he had been carrying the team in their recent wins. This technically isn't wrong. It is true that when the team was struggling Chovy with his massive plays(and balls) was able to carry the team. But people have to remember that when DRX gets going they are a really strong team.

And even if DRX is Chovy's Team it isn't that bad. Why? Because League of Legend is a Mid lane game. People then would say- we are derailing but whatever- that I said bot lane is the best lane to snowball. Yes, because there is two people. But if you ask which one player have the most influence in the game then it will be the Mid Laner. If Chovy can continuously carry while other players get back on form then DRX will be a strong team.

Group D Prediction

So DRX and TES will probably go up. In terms of win probability, it will probably be like: TES(40%), DRX(40%), FlyQuest(15%), MAD(5%). However, if we are comparing TES to DRX I think TES is a stronger team.

Overall

Anyway, this is a great draw for LCK. If nothing goes wrong all LCK will go up and will at least reach top 8. And personally I think they can all go top 8. Top 4 is a different story but today let's enjoy. Let's cherish this moment.

It is better than last year. And the God of TFT told me they would at least reach top 2. And we all know mathematic + superstition = 100% accuracy.

What if LCK win World

  1. Cosplay: I don't know what, I don't know how, but I know if LCK win World I will do a cosplay. Details to be decided.
  2. Will Spend 5,000,000 Won[4,255 USD]: I don't know on what, I don't know how, but I will spend 5,000,000 Won on something. Maybe a crazy giveaway? I don't know we will see.

How I turned Altınordu, the Bilbao of Turkey, into the best team in the country.

How I turned Altınordu, the Bilbao of Turkey, into the best team in the country.
My friends in the real world have no real interest in my FM achievements, so I'm here to tell you all about my best save to date. Buckle in.
In seven seasons I took Altınordu, a team lounging in the second division of Turkish Football to the champions of the country, breaking the successive two team domination between Fenerbahce and Galatasaray for a decade. The catch? Much like Athletic Bilbao, Altınordu are only allowed to sign home-grown players. So... here's my story.
It all started when I came across this article in The Guardian."Game changer: how Altinordu aim to dominate Turkish football with homegrown players". They'd been credited for producing top players such as Cenzig Under, and I was in-between saves and was considering a Youth Development challenge. Altınordu seemed perfect, a club with a vision of developing superstars, and in a league I knew nothing about and with seemingly both hands tied behind their back in only being able to sign Turkish nationals.
At first, it was humble beginnings. I found my self predicted for a mid-table finish in the Turkish 1.League, with an average squad and little transfer budget for wheeling & dealing. My initial transfer strategy was to buy players I knew I could sell on for profit, which was also part of my club vision.
Through some some miracle, and with the help of star striker Kemal Ruzgar & amazing youth prospect Ravil Tagir holding down the back (seriously, this guy was 16 and was the first name on my team sheet. He is an absolute must sign if you can get him) we managed to scrape ourselves into 2nd place, and landed promotion to the Turkish Super League, losing out closely to who would soon become our bitter rivals Adana D.S.
Promotion from the Turkish 1. League 2019/2020
Sadly, after taking stock of my squad and the money I had available to me (not much), I soon realised that survival in the Turkish Super League was going to be almost impossible. I decided to cash in on some young prospects that had come through our youth intake (selling them to the PSG of Turkey, Galatasaray) in order to try and buy some more experienced players that could come straight into the first team and help us with our battle for survival. Notable signings include the, at the time, eye-watering signing of Muhammed Sengezer for 925k, the second most reliable man between the stick I have ever witnessed in a game of FM.
However, as the season continued I realised we had one issue. Kemal Ruzgar, my star number 10 from last season just wasn't cut out for Super League Football. A real Cameron Jerome type. My chronic lack of goals (30 from 34 games) left us 3 points adrift of safety and relegated back to Turkey's 1. League obscurity. The only silver lining was bitter rivals Adana D.S. also took the plunge with us. We were blood brothers. Special shoutout to Bld.Erzurumspor who went from playoff promotion the season before to third place and qualifying for the Euro Cup II after somehow only conceding 28 goals.
Relegation from the Turkish Super League 2020/2021
To add salt to the wound, the relegation also kickstarted a mass exodus of talent from the club. My beloved Ravil Tagir, a son to me now after playing almost every game for the past two seasons. Gone*. Muhammed Sengezer, signed just the season before. Gone. All of my best players were taken from me. But Turkey's Super League prize money is quite an odd one, with teams being awarded just over 300k for a win, and around 150k for a draw. This had meant, after the max exodus of players and my 7 wins & 11 draws I had amassed quite the "war chest" of 4 million to spend. Big money for a team like me. So I went to work rebuilding the squad, a phoenix from the ashes.
*Ravil Tagir's selling has however funded most of my seasons, as he is sold about every two seasons to a bigger club and I just get that sweet sweet percentage of sale money.
The exodus & rebirth of Altınordu 2021/2022
In came Nurullah Aslan, the most reliable man between the sticks I've seen in FM (that's right Sengezer you traitor), the double Burak billing of Yesilay (striker and now a club Icon) and Kapacak, the Dani Alves of Turkey at RWB. Most importantly came Eslem Ozturk, possibly the greatest signing of them all. He can dribble, shoot, pass, tackle. He is a machine in the middle of the park. Little did he know that four years later he would be lifting the Turkish Super League as captain of Altınordu after 164 appearances and increasing his value by tenfold. Truly the most remarkable player I've ever had in my FM playing history. I want to name my children after him.
All of these signings are still with me today, it was a real golden season for my scouts.
With the bolstering of these signings, and the collective experience of the squad, we dominated the Turkish 1.League with Burak Yesilay scoring an impressive 20 goals in 26 starts. Our victory made even sweeter with Adana D.S not making it past the play-offs.
Winning the Turkish 1. League 2021/2022
We were back baby, and this time we knew what we were doing. Without losing any of our talent whist improving our squad; perfecting our tactics; and Burak Yesilay proving he could score goals in the Turkish Super League, we safely landed a respectable a top half finish of 8th place. Our wage budget was still the lowest in the league by a mile, and with 12 wins and 9 draws, we were again beginning to build our financial strength.
Top Half Decency 2022/2023
The next season was a bitter sweet one. After funneling most of my budget into developing my Youth Recruitment and Development (I quickly learned that any half decent Turkish player isn't gonna sign for me), I had finally developed what I would call a once in a lifetime player. His name: Hasan Tatli. A Philip Lahm type, I knew I had a special one on my hands. He had quickly taken over as my first choice RBat just 17, but in January of that season I lost him for a record breaking 7.5 Million to Manchester City on deadline day. Since then, he's developed into pretty much the most promising right-back in the world. A testament to what we had built, I wish him well but would have loved to kept him for another year, especially as he's still only made one start for City in four years. I'm expecting a BIG cheque in the post when City do eventually sell him though.

So close to Europe 2023/2024
I ended up finishing 6th place, just outside of continental football and I knew I was almost ready to challenge for the league. Pumping more money into Youth Development from the Hasan Tatli funds, I spent smart, picking up kids with great potential from smaller teams, promising them a clear route into first team football. Most notable of those was 18 year old Orhan Akgun who I picked up from Bayern for a tiny 1.2 million. A fantastic advanced forward, he quickly took over as leading man and would later go on to become my recording breaking sale at his release clause of 17.25 million.
With these signings and a move from a 4-2-3-1 Wide Gengenpress (I know), to a 4-3-3 Tika-Taka saw me finally break into Europe, finishing 3rd in the league behind the big boys of Galatasaray & Fenerbahce. I scored a whopping 63 goals which was only outshined by Fenerbahce's 82 thanks to Amine Gouiri.
Also Besiktas, managed by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, were relegated and are in financial ruin. You really love to see it.
Third place in The Turkish Super League 2024/2025
At this point in the save I should also mention I had taken over as Turkey's manager ahead of the World Cup of 2026. This was a great opportunity to keep tabs on the youth prospects of the country and also give some much needed international experience to some of my players.
In my head this was the season we would clinch it but we began to falter for various reasons. The media didn't think I couldn't handle the pressure of the Turkey job alongside my club responsibilities. For the first time since my second season at the club, my transfer policy had also been more miss than hit. Most of my signings failed to have an immediate impact, and my record breaking marquee signing of 6 million for Mezzala Omer Beyaz proved to be a bit of a flop. Most importantly, we were dealing with European football for the first time, and managed to get all the way into the Semi-Finals of the Euro Cup II at the first time of asking before being knocked out rather unfairly by compatriots Trabzonspor. We played 57 competitive games that season across three competitions, and we ended the season on a whimper, our players fatigued and injured, picking up just 2 points from our last five games and finishing 4th.
Disappointing in the Turkish Super League 2025/2026
After leading Turkey to a World Cup Semi-Final loss to Spain ( I still cannot believe I lost this match), I resigned with my head held high taking Turkey to their highest World Cup position since 2002 at third place. It was time to turn all my attention to Altınordu.
Turkey's 2026 World Cup Semi-Final exit at the hands of D.Martinez
Immediately I spotted the one weakness in my squad. A real solid DM Deep-Lying Playmaker. A Pirlo, to pull the strings. I had two choices, a young Turkish whippersnapper coming through the ranks at rival Antalyaspor, or Celil Yuksel a 28 year old, fairly obscure player languishing in recently relegated Buraspor's side. After a really bad amount of real life time umming and ahhing over who to sign, I decided to bite the bullet and "Moneyball it." Deep diving into their stats, I splashed the cash on Celil in a record breaking 8.5 Million roll of the dice. The press were shocked, the board baffled and the fans terrified. I'd lost the plot. But nobody was better at pass completion or key passes in the number of games he had played, and I was sure he was the man. My man. And by god I was right.
I forgot to get a screen-cap, but he lead the charts on key passes in the league, with a whopping 70 key passes by the end of the season, and a pass completion accuracy of 91%. He made it into the team of the season, he was our player and signing of the season and finished off with 3 goals, 4 assists and an average rating in the league of 7.29. He proved all the doubters wrong, and I couldn't be more proud.
Celil Yuksel - the moneyball gamble 2026/2027
I strengthened our squad depth too for squad rotation, knowing we again would be competing on the European front. This combined with some big youth prospects finally emerging as first team players (notably a 18 year old Ilhan Camak, a skillful winger who ended as our top scorer) meant we had a deep and talented group of players. Entering at the Second Playoff Round of the Euro Cup, we saw off Wolves to get into the group stages, and carried on strong in the league. By January we were top of the table, unbeaten in the league and qualifying top of our group in the Euro Cup II.
All of this success had drawn quite the attraction to my squad. At one point I think most of my players were wanted by various clubs from all over the world. The vultures circled and I lost my star Orhan Akgun to China via his release clause. I also cashed in on flop signing from the season before Omer Beyaz for a combined 28 million.

First Half Of 2026/2017 Season - Unbeaten In The League
Losing Orhan Akgun was a blow so I quickly tried to fill in the squad with more talent, perhaps spending a bit too much on 17 year old Ergun Alkan (who so far has not got over a 6.2 when I play him). And with him leaving our form quickly deteriorated. Goals were now hard to come by and we somehow were embarrassed by an awful team at the bottom of the table to lose our unbeaten streak. We were then knocked out of Euro Cup II by Wolfsburg after a 93rd minute penalty. The wheels were coming off my perfect season.
With Galatasaray breathing down our neck it was getting down to the wire, but the season eventually turned around with an impressive 6-1destruction of them to basically bring it home to Altınordu for the first time in their history. I did lose the Turkish Cup to them, but honestly, I couldn't care less! We were the Champions of Turkey.
So there it is, the story of how I took a team built entirely of Turkish players to the top of the Turkish domestic ladder in seven seasons. Now, the Champions League!
